Scientific Programme SEB Glasgow 2011 Friday, July 1st, 2011. Glasgow weather forecast: sunny and mild, light breezes. At 7.15 a.m. eager delegates from all over the world are beginning to congregate outside Hall 5 at the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre, home to the SEB's conference team and exhibition for the next four days. By 8.30 am, half an hour before the first talks of the conference kick off, a steady stream of delegates report to the registration desk to collect name badges, conference packs and lunch tickets: the exhibition hall is a-buzz with conversation. This trend continues throughout the meeting, with delegates from 37 countries descending upon Glasgow to attend the SEB's 2011 Annual Main Meeting. Over the 4day period, 800 delegates and speakers strode the halls of the SECC, attending first one and then another of the nine parallel sessions that took place each day. Inside the lecture theatres, over 360 talks were presented during the conference, some by high profile professors and researchers, others by students and early career scientists. The Plenary Lecturers, Prof. Richard Flavell (Woolhouse) and Prof. Jan Traas (Bidder) attracted delegates from across the sections, delivering talks which demonstrated not only their expertise but also their incredible passion and dedication to science. Almost as many posters as talks were presented during two dedicated poster evenings, again spanning the range of scientists present at the conference. A number of poster prizes, including the Irene Manton Poster Prize, were awarded to deserving (and delighted!) candidates. The Young Scientist Award Session showcased the work of young Experimental Biologists, whilst the President's Medallist talks celebrated the achievements of independent researchers and scientists. A multitude of networking events, planned and impromptu saw connections forged between delegates and speakers, students and professors and providers and prospective buyers alike. 400 delegates attended the conference dinner at the Glasgow Science Centre, supping on Scottish smoked salmon, duck and chocolate dessert before rounding off the evening with a dance or three. The conference rounded off with a traditional Scottish Ceilidh at Glasgow's oldest bar, but after 4 days of intense science and networking only the hardiest of delegates managed more than three Scottish jigs! A very special thank you is due to our session organizers, whose hard work, knowledge and dedication resulted in a diverse and interesting programme, and to our sponsors and delegates alike for their continued support – we look forward to welcoming you to SEB Salzburg next year!
