OI Journal Hatches, matches and despatches OI Journal 40 Matthew and Rachel Brooks Births Major Niklas Fairweather (1982- 93) and his wife Lisa announced the birth of their second daughter, Isabella Lucie, on 4th September 2009, a sister for Elena. Major Fairweather is serving with the Army in Germany. (I’m all for population control, but at this rate we are becoming an endangered species! Let us know who else we should welcome into the world. Ed.) Marriages Olivia Donaldson (nee Jones) 1993-95; was married to Rory Donaldson on 30th August 2008 in York Minster. Matthew Brooks (1982-93) married Rachael Evison at Great Fosters, Surrey on 4th October 2008. Matthew is now Group Manager for Frazer-Jones based in London. At the wedding Matthew was joined by fellow OIs Daniel (his brother and best man), Patrick Ryder, James and Claudia Ryder, Michael and Peter Wynn, Mr and Mrs Douglas Yelland. (I know marriage is often considered an old-fashioned institution but I’m sure more than two of you made this commitment last year – let us know. Ed.)
Obituaries It is with sadness that we bring to your attention the passing of OIs. As always, we send our condolences to their families and friends and thank them for letting us know. Keith Harris, a much-appreciated, and sorely missed, OI Club Secretary Keith Harris (1939-45) Keith was born in Gorleston in 1936 and moved to Ipswich in 1940, only to be evacuated soon after the outbreak of war, spending a few years in Northumberland. He was educated at Ipswich School, where his love of rugby, cricket and many other sports originated. He went on to College in Norwich, to study accountancy. In 1955 he was called up for National Service and spent two years with the Royal Air Force, servicing electronics on night fighters. In 1957 he joined the family-owned business Photokraft, a group of four processing laboratories, and this was to start a long and distinguished career in the photographic industry. In 1976, when Photokraft was taken over by Colourcare International, he became Sales Director for the company in Newmarket. He then became Director of Overseas Development, setting up new laboratories for the Colourcare Group in Norway and Spain. The lure of a new challenge lead him to join the Association of Photographic Laboratories in 1986 as Chief Executive, and during this time he organised the industry’s biggest, most successful, trade shows in Birmingham and then Olympia. The APL became part of the American trade organisation Photo Marketing Association in 1993, and he became Director of UK Operations, a post he held until 1998. In 1999 he was asked by PMA to organise the last of the big UK trade shows, and returned as a consultant for one more show – he would never turn down a challenge. His last position was as the UK consultant for Photo Imaging News, a USbased trade publication. Keith loved and followed most sports but his sporting passion was rugby. He played for Ipswich Rugby Club and began coaching. His interest in refereeing developed as he saw this was a way to give something back to a game that had given him so much pleasure. Refereeing gave way to assessing, and eventually he became President of the Eastern Counties Federation of Referees. Keith was a founder member of the Rotary Club of Ipswich East, becoming President in 1970. He supported so many activities and was currently Secretary, a post he had held for several years. The Rotary motto of ‘Service above Self’ typifies Keith’s care and concern for others. He was secretary for many years of Victim Support and gave his time and Keith on the right, with Graham Papenfus and Carole Day, in front of the School pavilion Members’ News expertise to several other organisations, including the OI Club, where latterly he was the Secretary. He will be sadly missed by so many. A very strong family man, Keith gained his greatest pleasure from time spent with his wife, children and grandchildren. His wife Joy, daughter Suzanne and sons Neill (OI) and David (OI) and their families survive him. Michael Ford Coverdale (1944-49) Peter John Gooding (1935-1944) Obituaries Stuart Cooper Michael died on 16th July 2009, aged 77 years. He leaves a widow, Jennifer, and a daughter, Diana. Peter attended Henley House Prep School and joined Ipswich School in 1935. He was a very keen sportsman, playing tennis, cricket and hockey. When he left School in 1944 he joined the National Provincial Bank whilst waiting for the call up which, due to a medical problem, never happened. During this time he met his wife, Meryl, and were due to celebrate their 58th wedding anniversary this year. They were married in the Ipswich School Chapel by the Rev Truman Tanqueray. Peter and Meryl have five children, and their daughter was christened in the chapel as well. Peter continued his association with the School by becoming Treasurer of the OI Club, and he also played cricket for the OIs and the Greyhounds, and hockey for Hadleigh and Fisons. On leaving the bank, Peter worked for Fisons in their insurance department, and the family lived in Hintlesham and later in Felixstowe. When Peter left Fisons he went to work for Sterling Winthrop in Surrey and later for Whitbread before finally joining Keith Shipton who went on to form Marsh McClellan. During his time with MM he spent nine years in Australia, where his daughter went to live. When he formally retired at 60 he continued to do voluntary insurance work for Melbourne OI Journal 41
