President, Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University
Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University (PDPU) is a world-class educational
institution in Oil & Gas and allied Energy Sectors. Modeled on the IITs &
IIMs, PDPU would create a vibrant brigade of knowledge leaders in the
Energy Sector. �is University has come into being at a crucial juncture when
a major transformation is taking place in the global energy industry. �ese
changes are impacting all areas in the energy sector: �nance, administrative
regulations, tax, marketing and information technology.
�e need of the hour is for professionals who can cope with this
transformation. I believe that this university will meet India’s growing need of
such professionals of world class excellence and expertise. Such an
energy-focused university will enable India change its economic and social
landscape dramatically.
I am sure that the University will inspire students to prepare themselves for
life-long learning and leadership in the energy sector globally. I would also
like to reiterate the wholehearted support of the energy industry in realizing
PDPU’s goals in terms of infrastructure, industry-networking and intellectual

�is quarterly newsletter will bene�t all stakeholders of Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University, peer
universities, industry and society with its real time reporting of research-intensive activities of the
university.
I hope that this newsletter would endeavor to show wider spectrum of the acquisition of knowledge
for the Oil and Gas Sector in particular and Global Society in general.
Incidentally, the newsletter reiterates the commitment of our university to produce ‘knowledge

of PDPU Faculty in Last Three Months
(2) Prof. Ashish Sarkar
2008 being the International Year of Plant Earth (IYPE), and the
International Polar Year (IPY), 33rd International Geological Congress
(33IGC) addressed the issues related to Earth sciences with special
symposia.
Ashish Sarkar attended the 33IGC from 6th August to 14th August
2008, held in Oslo, Norway. He contributed and presented two
papers in the ‘Paleocimate and Climate Modelling’ and ‘General
Contributions to Soil Science’. He in one of the few selected
participants, who received financial support from ‘Geohost’ to attend
the Congress.
(4) Prof. Tajinder Singh
(1) Prof. Vishvesh Badheka
I) Fast Track Scheme for Young Scientist from Department of Science &
Technology (DST), New Delhi. For the project entitled “Gas Metal Arc
Welding with Metal Core Arc Wire” in the year Dec 2008, Project is
ongoing. (DST Ref No: SR/FTP/ETA-19/2008)
Total Cost of Project is Rs 15,18,000.00 lakh.
II) Research project on “Weldability aspects of Low Activation
Ferritic-Martensitic Steel Welded by Activated Flux Tungsten Inert Gas
Welding” from Board For Research in Fusion Science & Technology (BRFST),
National Fusion Program of Institute for Plasma Research, Department of
Atomic Energy, Gandhinagar, India, in the year Dec 2008. Project is going
on and is in collaboration with Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research
(IGCAR), Kalpakkam. (Ref ; NFP/08/MAT-01)
Total Cost of Project is Rs 24,26,500.00

Badheka V J and Agrawal S K, It has been published in “Welding and Cutting” International Journal of German
Welding Society, DVS. Issue Welding and Cutting 5 (2008)
(3) Prof. Arun Sarma
Prof. Arun Sarma visited University of Innsbruck, Austria, Europe to attend 50th year celebration of
the Insbruck Plasma Physics Division, which was held on 5th December 2008. He was invited to
attend that celebration and also to give a talk on Plasma Physics. Prof. Sarma was also invited to
work in their laboratory on a joint project in collaboration with Max Institute of Plasma Physics,
Grifswald, Germany. Prof. Sarma worked in their laboratory on following two proposals:
(i) Thermal Conductivity and Resistivity of LaB6 Materials with Laser Power
(ii) Study of antenna characteristics in plasma medium.
Dr. Tajinder Pal Singh, was invited at MIT, Pune as a Chief Referee for the International Robocon
2008, held on 31th August, where 17 Engineering Colleges from 16 countries participated. Also,
Dr. Singh for the last five years has been heading a panel of judges in Robotic National level
competition (ROBOCON) organized by Doordarshan,where teams from IIT’s, NIT’s and other
Engineering Colleges actively participate.
Robocon, short for Robotic Contest, is an interesting game-cum-intellectual exercise for budding
engineers and their enthusiastic instructors, determined to innovate and create machines to
produce desired results. Participation in it is an end-to-end competitive experience from concept
design of a system of robots programmed to perform according to rules of the game played on a
precisely created challenging field and to score a victory beating the competitors; all this according
to a Theme declared by the Host Country.
International Robocons are mainly sponsored by Asia Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) which
includes Doordarshan (Prasarbharati) of India as a member.
RESEARCH

PUBLICATIONS
(5) Prof. Bhawanisingh Desai
Dr. Bhawanisingh G Desai, has been awarded a major DST project on
"Ichnofabric mapping of the Mundhan and Guneri Sections with special
reference to (Umian-Mundhanian Kutch Stages) Western Kachchh India".
He has also completed a DST Fast track project on "Ichnology of the
Jurassic Rocks of the Jara dome, Western Kachchh India" and has
published a paper, on the oxygenation history of Jara dome area, in
Journal of Geological Society of India. Along with this collobrotation was
also done to understand the evolution of life based on trace fossil
occurences in parts of Nigalidhar and Korgai syncline of Lesser Himalaya
along with Dr. Rajita Shukla of Waida Instiute of Himalayan Geology,
Dehradun.

EVENTS on The Campus
Catalyst
“Intellectuals brought together to engage in real
battlefields to prove their mettle!”
Catalyst -08 was conducted by IPMG on October
23, 2008. Four events were conducted:
(1) Ad’venture - Marketing Event
(2) Stalwart - Debating Event
(3) Enter’ Prize - Business event with a given seed
of money
(4) Q’rious - The quiz.
SPARKLE
“When Teachers meet Freshers”
‘Sparkle - 08’ was organized by IPTG on
September 5, 2008. Events like Painting and
Photographs Exhibition, Extempore, Musical
Evening, Skit Mimicry and Garba were conducted.
Eminent scholars were honoured.
RAMZAT
“Ramzat of ras-garba to ‘rock’ the
campus”
‘Ramzat - 08’ was a garba - evening
organized by PDPU students on
September 30, 2008 to introduce a
warm Gujarati traditional wave in the
campus.

PVL
“Exuberance of youth”
PVL (PDPU Volleyball League) started
its tournament from October 14,
2008. Six teams participated in the
tournament which ended on October
21, 2008.
“Kick of the youth”
EFL, the longest ever sporting event (lasting for more than 50 days)
involving the maximum student participation in any extra-curricular event
of IPTG, was started right after the mid semester exams of the autumn
semester in 2008, it was a part of the estrade(innovation board) initiative,
started to involve maximum participation of students. Teams like Armada,
Black Falcons, Merqrials and Mavericks participated in the event.

The E magazine of IPTG has been launched on October 22, 2008
with the goal of nurturing the creativity of students by providing
