The Suransuns footbridge provides<br />

a cont<strong>in</strong>uation of the ancient Roman Via<br />

Mala <strong>in</strong> the form of a flexible, slender<br />

ribbon, connect<strong>in</strong>g the two sides of<br />

the gorge at the bottom of which flows<br />

the H<strong>in</strong>ter Rh<strong>in</strong>e: 40 m span. It consists of<br />

four 2205 (1.4462) duplex sta<strong>in</strong>less steel<br />

ribbons, jo<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> pairs by means of straps<br />

<strong>in</strong> the same steel. A guardrail post,<br />

a 16 mm diameter 316L (1.4404) sta<strong>in</strong>less<br />

steel tube that also secures the natural<br />

stone deck<strong>in</strong>g through which it passes,<br />

is bolted to each strap; a flat welded to the<br />

upper end of the tubes forms the h<strong>and</strong>rail.<br />

Concrete abutments on each side of<br />

the gorge provide for anchorage <strong>and</strong><br />

tension<strong>in</strong>g of the structure by means of<br />

tension rods. The sta<strong>in</strong>less steel grades<br />

selected withst<strong>and</strong> salt spray from the<br />

nearby ma<strong>in</strong> road. The steel, stone <strong>and</strong><br />

concrete harmonise with the l<strong>and</strong>scape.<br />

considerations<br />

Environmental issues now constitute some<br />

of the parameters that must be considered <strong>in</strong><br />

any construction project, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g bridges.<br />

Reduced consumption of materials<br />

The method of design<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> manufactur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

steel components – computer-aided design<br />

<strong>and</strong> workshop prefabrication – optimises<br />

the quantity of material used <strong>and</strong> generates<br />

a m<strong>in</strong>imum of waste which, moreover,<br />

is recovered <strong>and</strong> recycled. The high<br />

performance afforded by sta<strong>in</strong>less steel’s<br />

mechanical properties renders it a graceful,<br />

lightweight solution.<br />

Environmentally friendly<br />

<strong>Sta<strong>in</strong>less</strong> steel is an environmentally <strong>in</strong>ert<br />

material: <strong>in</strong> particular, it does not release<br />

any element that could harm its environment.<br />

Be<strong>in</strong>g rust-resistant, it does not require any<br />

special ma<strong>in</strong>tenance, unlike a pa<strong>in</strong>ted material,<br />

which must regularly be stripped <strong>and</strong><br />

repa<strong>in</strong>ted: two operations that are liable to<br />

pollute the rivers be<strong>in</strong>g crossed or the<br />

surround<strong>in</strong>g air.<br />

Recyclable <strong>and</strong> recycled<br />

All ArcelorMittal sta<strong>in</strong>less steels are produced<br />

through the electric-arc process, 100%<br />

from recycled scrap. A material that is totally<br />

recyclable at the end of its life, it is<br />

extensively recycled. All ArcelorMittal<br />

<strong>Sta<strong>in</strong>less</strong> <strong>Steel</strong> Europe, ArcelorMittal Industeel<br />

<strong>and</strong> ArcelorMittal <strong>Sta<strong>in</strong>less</strong> Tubes Europe<br />
