Girls’ tennis
With each passing day the Lady
Flucos are improving. After a loss to
Prince Edward, the ladies defeated
Buckingham winning 7-2. “I feel like
the game was a big accomplishment
and self-esteem booster for us, and all
of the girls got to play whether competitively
or exhibition, which rarely
happens,” said junior Kirsten Sites.
On March 24, the girls took on
Western, one of the top teams in the
Jefferson District, for their first district
match. In past years the Flucos have
struggled in their matches against the
Warriors. This year, the girls proved
themselves sending two games into
a tie breaker and wining one doubles
match. “They have no idea what’s going
to hit them next time we meet,”
said Coach Connie Banton.
The team will play four consecutive
matches this week as they improve
with every hit.
Boys’ tennis
With an unusually large team for the
2011 season, the boys’ tennis team has
mostly new players which will play to
their advantage in future years. After a
loss to Prince Edward, the team spent
the week working hard on improving
its skills. On March 24 they faced the
Western Warriors in their first district
match of the season. After nine wellplayed
games, the team fell to Western
0-9.
Hopefully the team will redeem
themselves as they enter a jam-packed
week with four consecutive matches.
Varsity baseball
After a rocky start to the season, the
Flucos were hoping to redeem themselves
last week. After cancelling a
game on March 22, the team played
against E.C. Glass, losing 17-6. “It was
a tough loss, but we’re going to work
harder to win our upcoming games,”
said senior Josh Barringer.
On Friday (March 25) the team met
with Western in what would be their
first Jefferson District game. Both
teams fought hard for all nine innings,
but in the end, the Flucos fell to the
Warriors losing 4-9. This week the
team hopes to improve and pull out
a win as they take on the Louisa Lions
for the first time this season.
Junior varsity baseball
Much like the varsity team, the JV
team was also hoping to redeem themselves
as they took on E.C. Glass. Try-
ing to fight off the storms the teams
quickly started warming up and the
game quickly got started. After nine
innings the team suffered another loss
to E.C. Glass. “Our team is very young,
but they have a lot of heart and drive.
They have a never quit attitude that
will take them a long way if they keep
it,” said Coach Keith Brown.
Friday (March 25) the team hosted
Western Albemarle at 4:30 p.m. After
a well played game the team lost 7-
8 against the Warriors. “Towards the
end we came together as a team but
it was too late,” said freshman Austin
Foster.
This week the team will only play
one game at Louisa on March 31.
Varsity boys’ soccer
As they continue to campaign for
the title, the boys’ soccer team officially
got its start to the season.
For their first game of the year the
boys faced off against Spotsylvania,
easily shutting them out 8-0. The boys
were ecstatic about winning their season
opener and have faith that this
will be their year to win a title. The
team had much more to celebrate,
with senior Taylor Rafaly tying the
school record for most goals scored
in a high school career at Fluvanna
County.
“It is pretty exciting for me but I just
look at us as a team to score. Whether
it be me or the other ten players on
the field, it is equally as exciting,” said
Rafaly. On March 24 the boys traveled
to Western Albemarle, where they
shut out the Warriors, 2-0. “It was a
great win. Even though we did not
play our best, we still won. It’s great to
beat Western at the beginning of the
season,” said Coach Matthew Morrison.
They hope to keep up their twogame
winning streak as both varsity
and JV teams meet the Louisa Lions
on March 31.
Junior varsity boys’ soccer
Just like every other team at Fluvanna,
the JV boys’ soccer team is hoping
to earn a title. They got off to a good
start, easily defeating the Spotsylvania
Knights 8-0. They suffered a setback
in their 1-4 loss against the Warriors,
their first Jefferson District game. Still,
“We have a lot of veterans this year
and we’re using it to our advantage
and expect nothing less than a district
title,” said sophomore Ryan Uher.
Varsity girls’ soccer
In their first game of the season, the
team fought valiantly, managing to
defeat the Spotsylvania Knights 4-1 in
overtime.
Later in the week, the Ladies played
the Western Warriors in their first Jefferson
District game. In the end, the
Warriors took one from the girls, winning
4-1. This week the girls will host
Louisa at Costello Stadium as they try
to improve their record.
Junior varsity girls’ soccer
The junior varsity girls’ soccer team
has already made a name for themselves
in the Jefferson District. With
an overall 2-0 record, the team has defeated
both the Spotsylvania Knights
and the Western Albemarle Warriors,
all in one week. “Our victory was a
hard-fought battle to the finish, but
we deserved the win,” said freshman
Kassidy Hammond.
As the first JV team to beat Western
in eight years, it is clear the Ladies
have high expectations for the season.
Varsity softball
On March 22, the team battled it out
with the Spotsylvania Knights. After
a highly competitive game, the team
lost 1-5. On March 25, the team hosted
the Western Albemarle Warriors
and won 11-4. “We’re learning every
day and adjusting to getting a new
coach, but it’s going to be a great season,”
said sophomore Ashley Harris.
Junior varsity softball
With its season well underway the JV
girls’ softball team has already made a
name for themselves throughout the
Jefferson District. Taking on the Spotsylvania
Knights, the Flucos easily
beat them, bringing their record to an
undefeated 3-0. After a tough week at
practice, the team went on to defeat
the Western Warriors as well.
Outdoor track
The outdoor track team had its first
meet on March 26 as they competed
in the 34th Annual Blue Streak Co-Ed
Relay Classic at Harrisonburg High
School. In spite of the frigid temperatures,
the Fluco runners brought a
heat of their own as they placed third
out of nine teams.
Taylor Dean, Brooke Haislip, Stephanie
Bossong, and Nicole Douma of
the 4x8 relay team placed third. The
girls’ 4x1 team – consisting of Aesia
Toliver, Danielle Daniels, Emily Farina,
and Melissa Messier – placed second.
Similarly, the girls’ 4x2 team of
Toliver, Madeline Guthrie, Farina, and
Greer Brown brought in another eight
points as they took second place.
In the field events, Brown contributed
an impressive 30 points as she took
first in long jump, triple jump, and
high jump. Clearing a height of 10’7”,
Hannah Meader placed first and had a
personal best in the pole vault.
“The meet was a good transition
into the outdoor season. The weather
wasn’t favorable, but we adapted and
conquered,” said Toliver, the junior
co-captain.
For the boys, the 4x8 relay team of
Chris Markham, Ben Casto, Kevin Hogan,
and Greg Edwards placed third.
Jordan Green won long jump with a
mark of 20’08” as well as placing third
in the triple jump. Blake Hills placed
second in the high jump and Chance
Parmly tied for first in the pole vault
after clearing a height of 12’06”.
Fluvanna took first in the “throwers”
4x1 relay with great effort from
athletes Kasey Dudley, Nate Szarmach,
Greer Brown, and Devon Goode. Placing
third in the sprint medley was
Kevin Hogan, Katelyn Ludwig, Chance
Parmly, and Taylor Dean.
After recalculating the teams’ total
points, the Fluvanna coaches are
suspicious that the team might have
placed higher than third in the overall
standings. A point recall being conducted
this week will determine the
Flucos’ final score.
The track team was scheduled to
have another meet March 30 and another
relay meet on April 2 at Battlefield
High School.
with oversight from coaches Nick
