At UCT
A PEACEITUL march on
Parliament last Wednesday by 300
UCT students was stopped by
police armed with riot gear and a
water cannon. The march
dispersed peacefully with no
incidents.
The students had planned to
present a motion to Parliament
condemning the latest restrictions
placed on organisations. The
motion - passed unanimously by
over 3000 students and staff at a
student assembly held that day -
was supported by a wide variety
of student groupings, including
RAG, Nusas, Young Christian
Students and the Sports Union.
An Administration spokesperson
said at the assembly : "Sansco
played a useful and positive role on
campus" and described its banning
as a "foolish and repressive act."
Guest Speaker Advocate
Dullah Omar - formerly of the
UDF, said the bannings
"amounted to an admission of
defeat by the government" and
urged people to be optirnistic:
"You can reslrict organisations and
ban individuals from speaking but
no one can ban the ideas of liberty"
he said.
During the meeting, members of
the Academic Staff and
Administration appealed to
students not to attempt the march
because of the "extreme danqer
involved."
seriously overstepped his powen
when he unilaterally banned a
campus meeting last month where
conscientious objector, Ivan
Toms, was due to speak.
The meeting was to be hosled by
the Stellenbosch Nusas branch,
who were told by the Rector to
apply for permission !o the SRC.
SRC Chairperson, Francois
Beukman, told the Rector that the
SRC had refusesd the request by
Nusas but the issue .was not
discussed by the SRC.
The Rector, Prof Mike de Vries,
had agreed to act on the decision of
the SRC which he requested in
writing.
Beukman claims that he forgot to
raise the request at the SRC
meeting. He nevertheless wrote to
the Rector saying:"A large majority
of the meeting had made it clear
that people with connections to the
ECC are not welcome on campus."
democratic organizations.
Durban Westville
ONTHURSDAY 17 March, a
mass meeting of over 2 000
students was held at University of
Durban Westville campus, where it
was agreed to stay away from
lectures on Friday 18 March and
from campus altogether on
Monday 21 and Tuesday 22 March
- to prot€st the pending hanging of
the Sharpeville Six and to
commemorate the Sharpeville and
Uitenhage massacres and to
respond to the national call for a
day of protest on 21 March.
Meeting attended by over 2000
studenls was held on campus. The
meeling was addressesd by leaders
of the Christian, Hindu, and
Moslem religions. Thc resolution
trom'l'hursday's meeting was reaffirmed.
Following the recent banning of
17 organisations by the
govemment, the stellenbosch sRC
voiced its support in a motion
carried by 12 votes !o three and
proposed by Beukman. The SRC
expressed concern about 'The
revolutionary onslaught against the
republic."
The Stellenbosch SRC believes
that the sleps against organisations
are meant in the spirit of
"establishing a peaceful climate" in
order for political reform to take
place.
The motion expressed hope that
the bannings would have the effect
of 'working against the build up of
a revolutionary climate.'
On Monday 21 there was an 807a
stay-away on campus. Some
students went to work in the
library despite the resolution.
There was a march of students
mainly from residences.
Altercations developed bctween
students marching and studcnts
working in the librarics as
marching students attempted to
persuade students to leave the
library and heed the stay-away.
Students in the library, angered by
this, went to the SRC offices to
complain but found them closed in
commemoration. In the ensuing
turmoil, a window of the SRC
offices wa$ smashed.
A police helicopter arrived on the
scene firing teargas, rubber
bullets, as well as videoing all
action. Eight students were
anested and several were iniured.
UPOWER sharing is impossible
as blacks do not have the'correct'
So said Afrikaner Weerstands
Beweging leader, Eugene
TerreBlanche at a closed meeting
at the University of the Orange
Free State.
The meeting was organized by a
sub-committee of the SRC - Ordes
(Die Organisasie vir Denkende '
Studente). This is, reportedly, a
Durban
A Mutr'lrNG protesting the
effective banning of l7
organisations attracted a crowd of
2 000 students on Durban campus
recently.
The Durban SRC decided to send
delegates to a national Nusas
campaign which will culminate in a
delegation of student
representatives from Nusasaffiliated
campuses across the
country presenting a statement to
the government at the Union
Buildings in Pretoria.
The SRC has approached all
sectors of the student community
to send delegates. Resident House
Presidents have voted in favour of
the campaign as did the executives
of SAUJS, the Muslim Students
Association, the Arts, Social
Sciences, Commercc, Engineering
and [-aw Students Councils.
SRC President, Angus Stewart,
said: "Students at Durban
University are angered by the latest
wave of bannings - by removing
the last avenues of peaceful
opposition to apartheid, the
government has set the stage for
civil war and further international
disgrace. The feeling is that the
govemment is tampering with the
future of students, and we, as
students, wish the govemment and
the international community to
know that we will not tolerate
this."
cultural soclety created to
sl.imulate intellectual discussion.
In the past, Ordes has hosted a
speaker from the Idasa delegation
that went to Dakar to meet with the
African National Congress.
The closed audience consisted of
members of various camDus
societies - of *hich about i5vo
were reportedly rightwing.
Asked for his definition of
'Afrikaner",
TerreBlanche inti -
mated that the same culturar
background and ideological
outlook were necessary attributes.
When asked about the links
between the Conservative Party
and the AWB, TerreBlanche said:
"The AWB is not a polirical
organization, but a cultural one."
He agreed that the CP and the
AWB were "culturally linked" as
they both propogate "Afrikaner
kultuur."
TerreBlanche attacked the ANC,
claiming they had no right to be in
South Africa as they had no racial
identity. Furthermore, they "were
a gang inspired by communism or
Satan himself', This statement
allegedly elicited no adverse
reaction.
