Awards<br />
In <strong>2010</strong>, James Tomkins was the recipient of the<br />
prestigious Thomas Keller Medal. The award, named<br />
after the late president of FISA, Thomas Keller, is the<br />
highest distinction in rowing and has been awarded<br />
each year since 1990 to recognise an exceptional rowing<br />
career and exemplary sportsmanship. The medal is only<br />
awarded to an athlete retired from the sport and to “any<br />
competitor who has had a long and successful rowing<br />
career and who has made an outstanding contribution to<br />
rowing as a competitor and as sports personality”. Only<br />
one medal is awarded in any given year. The recipient<br />
of the medal receives a lifetime accreditation to all FISA<br />
World <strong>Rowing</strong> Championships, with accreditation<br />
for access to the boat area and a ticket in the FISA<br />
President’s Grandstand.<br />
In his international career, spanning over 20 years,<br />
James won three gold medals and one bronze medal at<br />
the six Olympic Games he attended between the 1988<br />
Seoul and 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. He has won<br />
World Championships is every sweep boat category -<br />
men’s coxless pair, men’s coxed pair, men’s coxless four,<br />
men’s coxed four, men’s eight. James was rewarded<br />
by the <strong>Australia</strong>n Olympic Committer at the 2008<br />
Beijing Olympic Games with the honour of carrying the<br />
<strong>Australia</strong>n flag at the Opening Ceremony<br />
FISA will make the official presentation to James during<br />
the World Championship regatta at Lake Karapiro,<br />
New Zealand in November.<br />
Keith Jameson of NSW was awarded an Order of<br />
<strong>Australia</strong> Medal on <strong>Australia</strong> Day <strong>2010</strong> for over 50 years<br />
of distinguished service to rowing. Keith, for the last<br />
13 years the President of Sydney <strong>Rowing</strong> Club, began his<br />
involvement with rowing as an athlete at Sydney High<br />
in the 1950s - since retiring from competition in 1965,<br />
Keith has continuously served the club as coach, Captain,<br />
Vice President and Board member. In addition to his<br />
roles at his club, Keith has completed extensive service<br />
for <strong>Rowing</strong> NSW including roles as the Association<br />
Honorary Secretary, Association Treasurer and Vice<br />
President. He has been recognized by <strong>Rowing</strong> NSW with<br />
the award of Honorary Life Membership. Keith has also<br />
served as Treasurer of <strong>Rowing</strong> <strong>Australia</strong>.<br />
At the South <strong>Australia</strong>n <strong>Sports</strong> Institute (SASI) <strong>2009</strong><br />
Awards, Jessica Molsher-Jones and Peta White were<br />
joint winners of the Junior Female Athlete(s) of the<br />
Year Award. As part of the <strong>Australia</strong>n Junior 4-, the<br />
girls won gold at the Junior World Championships in<br />
Brive-la-Gaillarde, France.<br />
President of <strong>Rowing</strong> SA, Bob Pennington, was awarded<br />
the Robyn Chaplin Award from the SA Olympic Council<br />
for outstanding administrative services to sport.<br />
Amy Fowler was named ACTAS Junior Female Athlete<br />
of the Year after winning a silver medal as part of the<br />
Junior Women’s quad scull at the <strong>2009</strong> World Junior<br />
<strong>Rowing</strong> Championships in Brive-la-Gaillarde, France.<br />
Angus Moore won ACTAS Junior Male Athlete of the<br />
Year, following his silver medal as a member of the Junior<br />
Men’s coxed four at the same regatta. Gordon Marcks,<br />
in his role as Head Coach of the ACTAS rowing<br />
program, was named ACTAS Coach of the Year.<br />
Coach Tom Bertrand received the Access for All Award<br />
at the <strong>2009</strong> Victorian Sport & Recreation Awards for<br />
his commitment to the Nestle <strong>Rowing</strong> Club and athletes<br />
with a disability.<br />
