THE MANNES COLLEGE DEANS’ AWARD, presented for outstanding citizenship and distinctive service to the Mannes community was given to Raphael Fusco (composition, PSD) and Stephen Solook (percussion, PSD). THE ASSOCIATED MUSIC TEACHERS’ LEAGUE AWARD was given to Vincent Peterson (choral conducting/compostion, MM) in recognition of his embodiment of the artistic and human ideals Mannes strives to represent. THE JOSEPH FIDELMAN MEMORIAL AWARD for the best performance of a piano composition by Joseph Fidelman was given to Alexander Beridze (piano, PSD candidate). The MARTINU COMPOSITION AWARD was given to Raphael Fusco for his outstanding achievements in the field of composition and for his distinguished contributions to the Composition Department. Dean Joel Lester made closing remarks on the vitality of the world of concert music, and invited all present to take the short walk back to Mannes for a festive reception and luncheon buffet in the Concert Hall. Jane Kittredge, who received her Bachelor of Music degree, spoke for her fellow graduates. 8 “As you go forth from Mannes, you will be Mannes’s musical ambassadors to the world. The 2007 Yearlong Beethoven Festival Mannes’s 2007 yearlong festival, “Beethoven: Influence and Immortality,” was launched on January 31 at the Colony Club, an elegant venue made available to Mannes thanks to the initiative of Patricia Forelle, a member of the Mannes Board of Governors. The Colony Club’s President Catia Chapin warmly greeted members of the club and the Mannes community. Dean Joel Lester then introduced Festival Artistic Director and Piano Department Chair Pavlina Dokovska, who delivered her usual lively program notes for performances by eight of Mannes’s gifted young artists of works by Beethoven, Brahms, and Schubert – aptly reflecting the festival’s unifying concept. The festival’s title signifies that Beethoven’s immortality is due both to his genius as manifested in his masterworks and also in the profound influence these works exerted on future generations. Among the musical giants of the past, Beethoven may well have been the most powerfully influential of them all. His influence is especially evident and far-reaching in those basic, conceptual areas of musical thought such as structure and development – issues that transcend particulars of personal style and genre. The 2007 festival, the ninth in a continuing series, is exploring the music of Beethoven and his followers through a total of 33 events. The 15 concerts performed by Mannes students that are the center of the series take place at some of New York’s most prestigious institutions and venues, including Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall; Steinway Hall; the German, Bulgarian, and Polish consulates; The Union Club; Goethe-Institut New York, the Ukrainian Institute of America, and four of the city’s most beautiful churches. If that isn’t enough, Mannes students will perform all 32 of Beethoven’s piano sonatas in a series of eight concerts in September and October in the Mannes Concert Hall. On the pedagogical side, the festival also includes seven master classes presented by renowned virtuosi and teachers Eteri Andjaparidze, Yefim Bronfman, Vladimir Feltsman, Claude Frank, Pamela Frank, Richard Goode, and Menachem Pressler. In addition, Beethoven authorities Jacob Lateiner and Vladimir Feltsman will offer lectures on the music of the master. Although some festival concerts are limited to Mannes contributors by invitation only, all master classes, lectures, and piano sonata concerts are free and open to the public. The Jean Schneider Goberman Prize in Composition A competition in honor of Jean Schneider Goberman, a Mannes alumna who received her diploma in 1932, and served on the faculty from 1965 to 1984, has been established by her former student, Peter Frank. Ms. Goberman, a gifted teacher and cellist, was an inspiration to all those fortunate enough to study and perform with her. In addition to her teaching at Mannes, she toured the United States and Australia, and was a member of the New York Sinfonietta and New York String Quartet. The competition is open to students of all Raphael Fusco, first prize winner of the inaugural competition divisions currently enrolled at Mannes. Composition entries must be for piano trio, piano quartet, or piano quintet. The first prize winner receives $1500 and a premiere of the winning composition at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall by Alaria (Ensemble-in-Residence of the Extension Division since 1984). Second- and third-prize winners receive $700 and $300, respectively. In 2006 (the competition’s inaugural year), Raphael Fusco (compositon BM ‘05, MM ’07) was awarded First Prize for his piano quartet, Due Giacattoli. His winning composition received a premiere performance by Alaria at Weill Recital Hall on December 3, 2006. Ryan Chase (BM candidate in composition) won Second Prize with his And They Were With Us Too for piano quintet. Preparatory Division student, Peter Asimov (high-school freshman and member of the Honors Program in both piano and composition) received the Third Prize with his Piano Quintet in C Minor. Both Ryan and Peter were also finalists in the ASCAP Foundation Morton Gould Young Composer Award.
