a. Lower School Academics
The Lower School added two new courses to the curriculum! The Discovery
Course, developed and taught by Sharis Swartley, is an interdisciplinary class that
integrates environmental science, creative play, and the arts. The Deportes Course,
developed and taught by Justin Cooper, incorporates physical education and the
Spanish language.
b. Upper School Academics
It was a busy year for students in the Upper School, as many opted to take Advanced
Placement (AP ) level courses. Thirty-eight students took 74 AP tests in May 2007,
high scores on these exams result in earning college credits.
c. & d. Fine and Performing Arts
The Drama Club presented a fantastic performance of You’re a Good Man, Charlie
Brown. The popularity of instrumental and choral music grew as one third of the
students participated in the music programs. The string ensemble had their first
performance, and visual artists established a chapter of the National Arts Honor
Society. In March 2007, both fine and performing artists placed well in the county
wide Teen Arts Festival.
e. & f. Rocks, Roots, and Wings Trips
Both Lower and Upper School students challenged themselves with the school’s
annual “interim” trips, now known as Rocks, Roots, and Wings. Students
experienced an array of activities including rock climbing, canoeing, and team
building activities.
g. Varsity Girls’ Softball Championship
In Spring 2007, the Varsity Girls’ Softball team won the Conference Title. The
Penn Jersey Softball Finals was a competition of two great teams. The Spartans
played a great game against Mercer Christian Academy. Afterwards the teams and
their supporters had a small celebration with cake, which was adorned with the names of
both teams.
h. Varsity Boys’ Soccer
The Varsity Boys’ Soccer team had a successful season, as they competed for the
Conference Title in the Penn Jersey Soccer Finals against rivals, Solebury. The
very intense game ended in a dramatic 2-1 loss. Our players must be commended
for their sportsmanship and passion, as they battled to the end.
i. 21 graduates earn $1 million in merit scholarships
College Counselor Elizabeth Drumwright had a fantastic first year! The Class
of 2007 definitely set a precedent, as Elizabeth worked closely with 21 seniors
to cultivate over $1 million dollars in merit scholarships to over 80 colleges and
universities.
j. 170th anniversary of St. Mary’s Hall - Doane Academy
May 2007, St. Mary’s Hall - Doane Academy celebrated its 170th birthday. In honor of this
occasion, Second Grader Adam Ziegler and his classmates presented the school with an
American Flag and certificate of authenticity from the United States Congress.
