Welcome to Leuven and to EURODYN 2011 On behalf of the European Association of Structural Dynamics (EASD), it is a great pleasure to welcome you to the 8th International Conference on Structural Dynamics, EURODYN 2011, in Leuven. This conference follows earlier successful conferences held in Bochum (1990), Trondheim (1993), Florence (1996), Prague (1999), Munich (2002), Paris (2005), and Southampton (2008). K.U.Leuven is honored to organize and host the eighth edition of this important international conference, in cooperation with the Technological Institute of the Royal Flemish Society of Engineers. EURODYN 2011 covers all major aspects of structural dynamics. It is devoted to theoretical, numerical and experimental developments in structural dynamics and their application to all types of structures and dynamic systems. 28 mini-symposia are organized covering a wide range of topics such as earthquake and wind engineering, offshore engineering, dynamic soil-structure and fluid-structure interaction, vibro-acoustics, bridge dynamics, structural control, experimental techniques, random vibrations, uncertainty quantification and propagation, stochastic dynamics, sensitivity and robustness, safety and reliability, dynamic stability, system identification and structural health monitoring, inverse problems, vibrations due to traffic, construction works, industrial activities, and blast loading,... Both theoretical developments and industrial applications are treated. All these topics are addressed in plenary and semi-plenary keynote lectures, as well as mini-symposia that are organized in 10 parallel sessions. Apart from the (semi-)plenary keynote lectures, 1125 abstracts have been submitted, of which 745 have been accepted; 502 papers have finally been submitted and will be presented at the conference by authors from over 47 countries. Although originally a European conference, EURODYN 2011 welcomes a very strong participation from non-European countries, in particular China, Japan and the USA. The papers are contained on a CD-ROM, while the conference program and book of abstracts should help you plan your conference. The conference will be held at the campus of K.U.Leuven in the center of Leuven. Opening and plenary lectures will take place in Auditorium Pieter De Somer, while semi-plenary lectures, parallel sessions, and a technical exhibition are scheduled in College De Valk. We would like to thank all the mini-symposium organizers, as well as the members of the International Scientific Committee and the Senior Advisory Committee for their contribution to the successful organization of this conference. We would also like to thank all (semi-)plenary keynote lecturers, authors, participants and exhibitors for their contribution to the conference. A special word of thanks finally goes to all members of the Organizing Committee and the Conference Secretariat for their considerable help. The extensive technical program, covering almost all aspects of structural dynamics, shows that it is excellently organized and we are looking forward to an exciting conference. One of the major tasks of the European Association of Structural Dynamics (EASD) is to oversee the organization of the EURODYN conferences. In this context, I would like to thank the members of the Organizing Committee for their most dedicated work.
