3.3. Pressure filter, plate <strong>and</strong> frame press filter<br />
The counter-current <strong>red</strong> <strong>mud</strong> washing system was closed with filter presses before the 1930s.<br />
Operation <strong>of</strong> pressure filters requi<strong>red</strong> excessive amount <strong>of</strong> workforce [10]. Automated plate<br />
<strong>and</strong> frame pressure filters were installed recently in the Gardanne Alumina Refinery in France<br />
<strong>and</strong> the Alumina Refinery <strong>of</strong> Aluminium de Greece (AdG). The <strong>mud</strong> cake can not be washed<br />
in the course <strong>of</strong> filtration. Another drawback is the discontinuous operation <strong>and</strong> the low<br />
throughput. A low moisture content <strong>of</strong> 28%, <strong>and</strong> <strong>mud</strong> cake with good h<strong>and</strong>ling properties<br />
have been reached [11]. Such <strong>red</strong> <strong>mud</strong> filter cake <strong>of</strong> AdG [12] is shown in Fig. 2.<br />

3.4. Hyper Baric Filter (Hi-Bar Filtration)<br />
Some details <strong>of</strong> the Hyper Baric Filtration are given in the Section 8.1. A comparison <strong>of</strong> filter<br />
cake from vacuum filtration <strong>and</strong> Hi-Bar Filtration is shown in Fig. 3. The relationship<br />
between fluidity (rigidity) <strong>of</strong> <strong>red</strong> <strong>mud</strong> <strong>and</strong> separation pressure is shown in Fig. 4.<br />
