2010-11 Bishop outlook
2
With only one senior and one
junior with significant playing experience
on the roster, the easy prediction
would be growing pains for the 2010-11
Ohio Wesleyan men’s basketball team.
Head coach Mike DeWitt concedes
the point on his squad’s youth, but
notes that the Bishops have a chance
to be pretty good once February rolls
around.
“We’re going to be a very young
team, especially early in the season,
but I think we’ll compete very well,”
DeWitt said. “The desire to be a good
team is there.”
The Bishop backcourt is wellstocked
with junior wing Tim Brady
and sophomore guard Andy Winters.
Brady was a first-team All-North
Coast Athletic Conference selection
last season after ranking fourth in
the conference in scoring. He also
ranked among the conference’s top 10
in field goal percentage and free throw
percentage.
“Tim is one of the best scorers in
the conference, and he has worked
hard on improving his 3-point range,”
DeWitt said.
Winters, a point guard, led the
league in assists, was fifth in steals,
and provided some scoring punch as
well, ranking among the NCAC’s top
30.
“Andy is one of the best point
guards in the conference. Leading the
conference in assists as a freshman
is a rare feat, and we hope he keeps
getting better as he gets more experience.”
The other wing spot could go to
sophomore Greg White, who helped
the United States win the U-21 World
Deaf Basketball championship during
the summer; or sophomore Vaughn
Spaulding, who made some highlightreel-quality
plays in limited action last
season. Freshman Dre White, an alldistrict
selection in high school, also
will see time at the wing.
DeWitt will look to junior Tyler
Hall and freshman Alex Briggs, an
all-conference honoree in high school,
to provide some outside shooting at
the wing spots. Sophomore Anjuwon
Spence also looks to make his mark.
Sophomore Eric Easley and freshman
Perry Freed will back up Winters
at the point guard spot, and sophomore
Matt Swaim and freshman Andy
Komara provide additional depth.
At the post positions, DeWitt has
the luxury of working with “a good
combination of four guys who have
different strengths.”
Sophomore Marshall Morris
emerged as a starter last season, ranking
among the NCAC’s top 10 rebounders
and finishing among the NCAC’s
top 30 scorers.
Senior Andrew Martin, who has
provided some quality minutes during
the last two seasons and can add another
perimeter shooter to the Bishop
offense, will look to win the other post
position.
Sophomore Billy Reilich earned
increased playing time as last season
progressed and provides a physical
presence inside, and freshman Reuel
Rogers, a special mention all-state pick
in high school, will get a chance to
contribute immediately.
Greg White also could line up at a
post position to give DeWitt additional
options, and senior Danny Flanegan
will join the team after the conclusion
of the Bishops’ football season.
Andy Winters
DeWitt’s philosophy that a tough
non-conference schedule prepares his
squad for the rigors of the NCAC has
resulted in another November-December
gauntlet for the Bishops.
Ohio Wesleyan opens the season
by hosting Albion, then takes off for
the Calvin Tip-Off Tournament, where
the field includes traditionally-tough
Calvin and defending NCCAA national
champion Grace Bible.
The Bishops follow with a trip to
DePauw for the Mike Rokicki Community
vs. Cancer Challenge before facing
traditional rival Capital, a 2009 NCAA
Division III “Sweet 16” team, in their
final tune-up before the NCAC schedule
begins.
Perennial power Wabash and
defending champion Wooster appear
early on the Bishops’ conference slate,
and Ohio Wesleyan rings out 2010 with
an appearance at Otterbein’s Smokey
Ballenger Classic.
