University bolsters
Calgary presence
Anew street-level office in downtown
Calgary is strengthening relationships
between the Faculty of Engineering
and its alumni and partners in southern
Alberta. On January 28 and 29, the University
of Alberta officially opened its new
U of A Calgary Centre, celebrating relationships
old and new. The Faculty of Engineering
continues its presence in Calgary with its
Co-op Education Program and external
relations staff.
“The Faculty of Engineering has recognized
the importance of being closely connected
to our alumni and corporate partners in
southern Alberta by having staff in this area
for the past 12 years,” says Dean of
Engineering Dr. David Lynch. The new office,
he adds, “dramatically improves our ability to
interact with our many alumni and partners.”
The Faculty has some 4,000 alumni in
Calgary, and it is important that the university
recognizes their talents and achievements, and
remains connected with them, says Lynch.
“Our alumni are among the most eminent
community leaders in Calgary, and thousands
of our alumni here have done tremendous
work to build Alberta. They have helped us
transform what we do in the Faculty of
Engineering—they’re behind a major transition
in the Faculty over the past 15 years.”
Reviews of the Calgary Centre office are
glowing. “You walk into the place and right
away you feel like—‘Hey, I’m back home
again,’” says Neil Camarta (Chemical ’75).
“It’s like an embassy. You know you’re at the
U of A.” Camarta has always been aware of
by Richard Cairney
the university’s presence in Calgary but says
the new office—at street level near the
Petroleum Club—bolsters the university’s
image. “The U of A has always been in
Calgary but now you’ve got this great facility
right in the centre of the action, right downtown,
and it lives up to U of A standards.”
Dr. Ken Porteous, who oversees the
Faculty’s Co-op Education Program, says the
Faculty has long felt it necessary to hold offices
in Calgary to connect with employers, potential
employers, and students who are on co-op
placements in the Calgary area. The co-op
program provides about 1,400 work terms per
year, and it’s important to nurture relationships
with partners in industry, and to ensure students
are well served. “If students have a question
about their program, they’ve got someone
right here who can help them,” says Porteous.
Students with the Autonomous Robotic
Vehicle Project (ARVP) were also on hand
during a January 29 open house, showing off
‘Bearacuda,’ an autonomous robot designed
to think for itself and perform tasks underwater.
The student group and Bearacuda will
take part in an international competition in
San Diego this summer.
“You walk into the place and
right away you feel like—‘Hey,
I’m back home again.’ It’s like
an embassy. You know you’re
at the U of A.” —Neil Camarta
CEO John Lau at the Calgary Centre opening.
Roberts explains the workings of ‘Bearacuda,’
an underwater robotic vehicle, during the
Calgary Centre Open House.
There, Bearacuda will run an underwater
obstacle course where it is required to
enter an area through a gate, dock with a
buoy, follow a pipeline, drop a marker,
detect a beacon, and retrieve a payload—all
within deadline.
Leslie Reinke (Electrical ’88, MEng ’95)
was impressed by the students’ level of work.
“For an undergraduate program I think it’s
fairly ambitious—it’s not an easy thing at all,
and it’s multidisciplinary,” he says. “I’m quite
impressed.”
Reinke, who attended the open house and
has taught electronics technology at the
college level in Atlantic Canada, says the
ARVP program gives students an outstanding
learning experience. “This is a level of
complexity that college students—at a SAIT
or NAIT, for example—wouldn’t be doing.”
With nearly 7,000 square feet of space, the
Calgary Centre boasts a 48-seat classroom
and breakout rooms. Engineering shares the
office with the School of Business, the Faculty
of Rehabilitation Medicine, the Camrosebased
Augustana Campus, and External
Relations. The Calgary Centre is located at
120, 333 – 5th Ave. SW, and can be found online
