executive, who's taken on dean
ing up the Rouge River and making
it acceaaible to residents,
wanta to help people create mem
oriee. He ahared hia plana with
members of the Rouge Remedial
Action Plan Advisory Council at
the council's meeting Wednesday.
Since the Rouge was polluted
and Hines Park had gained a rep
utation for drugs, bikers snd
crime by the time he was growing
up in Livonis in the late 1960a
and early 70a, he wants people to
be able to make memories like
those of Russ Gronevelt, director
of public services for the county.
Gronevelt grew up in Livonia
about 16 years earlier than Duggan,
Duggan said. Hi« memories
include canoeing on Newburgh
Lake and ice skating on Wilooz
"What could we do to go back
to that?" Duggan said he asked
himself.
As a youth, going to Kensington
Park was a family activity, but
it's alae s full day'a activity, be
said. Today, with both parent*
working, it hard to find time, it's
easier to stick a tape in the videocassette
recorder, be said.
But lately with canoeing on
parts of the Rouge, which started
last year and ice akating on Wilcox
and Newburgh lakes, which
started thia year, Duggan said it'a
been more convenient to take hia
kida out.
