Funded by the Rockefeller Foundation, the Database; <strong>of</strong> <strong>Contemporary</strong> <strong>African</strong> <strong>Art</strong>ists seeks to achieve the following objectives: To promote research and documentation <strong>of</strong> <strong>African</strong> art To build linkages between the various branches <strong>of</strong> the art world: artists, galleries and institutions, art critics and historians, collectors and other specialists in art. In collaboration with Cornell Institute for Digital Collections, the J.H. Clarke <strong>African</strong>a Library <strong>of</strong> Cornell University has recently launched a bold new project: the Database <strong>of</strong> <strong>Contemporary</strong> <strong>African</strong> <strong>Art</strong>ists. This pioneering venture, A DOCUMENTATION AND NETWORKING PROJECT will create a computerized database <strong>of</strong> contemporary <strong>African</strong> artists as well as generate a series <strong>of</strong> bio-bibliographic dictionaries, all fully illustrated. It aims to promote networking among <strong>African</strong> artists throughout the world and to encourage new initiatives in the collection, documentation, and dissemination <strong>of</strong> contemporary <strong>African</strong> art. The database is classified by country and will include artists who have been working since the 1920s, in addition to important artists from earlier dates.
