Sun Valley Ski Trip
by Michael Bouton
Have you ever wanted to have the whole run to yourself so you
can make those wide sweeping turns without the fear of someone
running over you? Well, we almost had that situation on Baldy
Saturday morning. Bert Whistle, our guide, took 26 members
up the gondola for “early ups” at 8:30 am. We skied miles on
groomed runs and played in the “gun powder,” a term coined to
describe the ever-deepening snow made by the 555 snow guns on
Mount Baldy. At 9,150 feet it was a breathtaking view. We even
had pictures taken to prove it. Those who participated
received a breakfast voucher as well.
Everyone said the ski trip was a tremendous success.
With bloody marys on the bus as a wake-up, we were
entertained with a fun raffle that made the time pass
quickly. Friday night, for those who could find the
822-Bitterroot suite, we had a wine and cheese “get-toknow
each other” social gathering. Jim Herwig even
proclaimed, “Hey, it was a great party and they didn’t
run out of wine.” Dave Compton asked later, “Was
there food?”
Most everyone skied or boarded two days but some
went the distance and enjoyed the mountain all three.
A group of hardy Nordic skiers tried out the trails
and lodge at the Sun Valley Nordic Center. “It was
wonderful,” Mischel Vanderbush reported. Other members
shopped, explored the Village and Ketchum; while another group
had a vivacious game of bridge going in their condo suite.
The one thing that always impresses me is the excellent service of
all the Sun Valley employees. From the staff in the Duchin Room
to the bell staff, to the housekeeping staff, they were wonderful.
The hot pool is always refreshing and a
great place to meet people.
For those of you who didn’t go with
the club this year, I’m sorry you missed
out. I believe from the unanimous
voice on the bus, that the club will do
Photo: Victoria Canning the trip again next year. It was a blast,
thank you all who attended. You are what this club is all about.
You have to get involved.
Plan to attend the annual meeting March 18 for a special award
to one of our members who went on the trip.
Editors note: The trip was great fun, thank you Michael and Julie.
