Monday 13 August to Friday 24 August<br />
<strong>Halton</strong> <strong>Jo<strong>in</strong></strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Local</strong> <strong>Sport</strong> is part of the national ‘‘<strong>Jo<strong>in</strong></strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Local</strong> <strong>Sport</strong>’ celebration<br />
which will be tak<strong>in</strong>g place on 18-19 August, which is the first weekend between the<br />
Olympic and Paralympic Games.<br />
<strong>Local</strong> sports groups across the UK know that London <strong>2012</strong> will generate<br />
unprecedented enthusiasm for sport <strong>in</strong> the UK. The ‘<strong>Jo<strong>in</strong></strong> <strong>in</strong>’ weekend aims to capture<br />
that enthusiasm and br<strong>in</strong>g it back to the place it beg<strong>in</strong>s for all great champions – their<br />
local sports facilities. The ‘<strong>Jo<strong>in</strong></strong> <strong>in</strong>’ weekend aims to enable clubs to convert this once<br />
<strong>in</strong> a lifetime wave of <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong>to a susta<strong>in</strong>able future of help, support and membership<br />
from their local community.’<br />
This is the opportunity for you to access and take part <strong>in</strong> a variety of sports or physical<br />
activities, tak<strong>in</strong>g place <strong>in</strong> <strong>Halton</strong>. Sessions will <strong>in</strong>clude, come and try it taster sessions,<br />
demonstrations, or competitions, and are open to young people and adults.<br />
If you have any further questions relat<strong>in</strong>g to any of the specific sessions please get <strong>in</strong><br />
touch with the identified contact at the specific sessions. Sessions will be FREE to all<br />
those wish<strong>in</strong>g to attend, unless otherwise stated.<br />
In addition to these sessions; there will also be a FREE ‘<strong>Jo<strong>in</strong></strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Local</strong> <strong>Sport</strong>’ day 12:00pm<br />
to 3:00pm on Saturday 18 August at Stobart Stadium <strong>Halton</strong>. Included <strong>in</strong> the day’s<br />
activities will be the showcas<strong>in</strong>g of Olympic sports, promotion of local sports clubs,<br />
fun and games, face pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g, orienteer<strong>in</strong>g and the celebration of the torch bearers<br />
from <strong>Halton</strong> who took part <strong>in</strong> the Olympic torch relay up and down the UK. You will<br />
have an opportunity to try out the sports on display and also get your photo taken<br />
with the torch. For further <strong>in</strong>formation, and to register to attend please contact the<br />

What will you need?<br />
• Ensure you take along some liquid refreshments to<br />
prevent dehydration<br />
• Cloth<strong>in</strong>g and footwear suitable for the activity you wish to attend<br />
• Take a change of clothes <strong>in</strong> case of wet weather

This will be the 10 th <strong>Halton</strong> <strong>Sport</strong>s Awards. The aim of the Awards is to celebrate the<br />
success of local sport<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dividuals, clubs and schools by highlight<strong>in</strong>g their<br />
achievements with<strong>in</strong> their given sport. Follow<strong>in</strong>g the last n<strong>in</strong>e year’s highly successful<br />
Award even<strong>in</strong>gs, several award w<strong>in</strong>ners have gone on to represent <strong>Halton</strong> at the<br />
Merseyside Future <strong>Sport</strong><strong>in</strong>g Champions Awards, and other local awards with great<br />

Run <strong>in</strong> <strong>Halton</strong> is a programme set up to promote the benefits of us<strong>in</strong>g runn<strong>in</strong>g /<br />
jogg<strong>in</strong>g as a way to <strong>in</strong>crease your physical activity levels. The 3-2-1 programme<br />
provides three runn<strong>in</strong>g routes across three different sites and at three different<br />
distances. Hopefully the programme will encourage you to start, return or carry<br />

<strong>Halton</strong> has a strong local sport<strong>in</strong>g community and boasts <strong>in</strong> excess of 100 sports clubs,<br />
groups and associations. These clubs, groups and associations not only play a key role<br />
<strong>in</strong> the development of sport<strong>in</strong>g opportunities for the local community but also promote<br />
the towns’ sport<strong>in</strong>g profiles at county, regional, national and <strong>in</strong>ternational level.

The <strong>2012</strong> <strong>Sport</strong><strong>in</strong>g Calendar which was produced earlier <strong>in</strong> the year by the <strong>Halton</strong><br />
<strong>Sport</strong>s Partnership and br<strong>in</strong>gs together a calendar of sport<strong>in</strong>g activities and events<br />
tak<strong>in</strong>g place with<strong>in</strong> the borough and nationwide. In the lead up to the <strong>2012</strong> Game the<br />

<strong>Sport</strong><strong>in</strong>g Excellence Grant Scheme &<br />
Plat<strong>in</strong>um Card<br />
The <strong>Sport</strong><strong>in</strong>g Excellence Grant Scheme offers support for people with a sport<strong>in</strong>g talent<br />
to current and potential Olympians. Lucy Mart<strong>in</strong> has been selected for GB Olympic<br />
road cycl<strong>in</strong>g team for London <strong>2012</strong>. Emma Smith (trampol<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g) was selected for the<br />
GB Olympic tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g squad. Other notable performances <strong>in</strong>cluded Jack Hunter-Spivey<br />
and Jordan Abbots (table tennis) Gold medals <strong>in</strong> the UK School Games, Jenny Illidge<br />
(canoe<strong>in</strong>g) and Omar Haddad (Gymnastics) and a number of athletes from Valiant<br />
Sorts Club represent<strong>in</strong>g GB Special Olympics team at <strong>in</strong>ternational events across the<br />
world.<br />
In 2010 Allyn Condon (Bobsleigh) competed <strong>in</strong> the Vancouver W<strong>in</strong>ter Olympics and <strong>in</strong><br />
addition coaches and officials have been supported to attend <strong>in</strong>ternational events<br />
across the world.<br />

<strong>2012</strong> Olympic Torch Relay<br />
The Olympic Torch hit <strong>Halton</strong> on Thursday<br />
31 May and despite the weather,<br />
thousands of people l<strong>in</strong>ed the route to<br />
catch a glimpse of it. Spirits rema<strong>in</strong>ed<br />
undampened throughout the torch’s visit<br />
as the wait<strong>in</strong>g crowds were enterta<strong>in</strong>ed by<br />
street performers, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g samba<br />
bands, stilt-walkers and jugglers.<br />
Children l<strong>in</strong>ed the streets with flags, and<br />
red, white and blue hats and costumes<br />
and dignitaries enjoyed music and drama<br />
staged by young people at The Br<strong>in</strong>dley<br />
before go<strong>in</strong>g to watch the procession. The<br />
Olympic party arrived <strong>in</strong> Runcorn shortly<br />
after midday with 13 year old Aiden Coll<strong>in</strong>s<br />
the first to get his hands on the torch. He<br />
was nom<strong>in</strong>ated because of his Facebook<br />
campaign to encourage people to sign<br />
the organ donor register when his<br />
nephew Ethan, who has s<strong>in</strong>ce died,<br />
needed a double transplant operation<br />
after be<strong>in</strong>g born. Other torch bearers <strong>in</strong><br />
Runcorn <strong>in</strong>cluded Adam Green, Runcorn’s<br />
<strong>in</strong>spirational anti-loan shark campaigner<br />
Carl Highton and marathon runn<strong>in</strong>g fire<br />
fighter Gav<strong>in</strong> Hanson. David Hardwich<br />
took the flame on to the Silver Jubilee<br />
Bridge before hand<strong>in</strong>g over to Doo Young<br />
Yoo, an executive of event sponsor<br />
Samsung.<br />
Once over the Bridge, the torch passed to<br />
Christ<strong>in</strong>e Ponsford and then Ashley Swa<strong>in</strong>,<br />
three times a national pole vault<br />
champion unable to go the Olympics after<br />
a serious back <strong>in</strong>jury who led the<br />
procession to the Ted Gleave <strong>Sport</strong>s<br />
Ground In West Bank, Widnes. The<br />
ground was host to a sport<strong>in</strong>g celebration<br />
of its own to mark the day. <strong>Halton</strong><br />
<strong>Borough</strong> <strong>Council</strong>’s <strong>Sport</strong>s Development<br />
Team was provid<strong>in</strong>g multi-sport activities<br />
for Year 6 pupils from every school <strong>in</strong> the<br />
<strong>Borough</strong>, helped by Widnes Vik<strong>in</strong>gs,<br />
Cronton College, West Bank Rugby Club<br />
and other local sports club volunteers.<br />
Climate change campaigner Caitl<strong>in</strong><br />
Hudson carried the torch around the<br />
ground before pass<strong>in</strong>g it to James Carew,<br />
who underwent an operation to remove a<br />
stage four bra<strong>in</strong> tumour he took it though<br />
West Bank and on to Ashley Way. F<strong>in</strong>ally<br />
Gracie Gannon completed the <strong>Halton</strong><br />
stage of the relay before the flame was<br />
popped <strong>in</strong>to the lantern.

I-Pitch<br />
The latest generation of artificial grass pitches has been <strong>in</strong>stalled<br />
at Stobart Stadium <strong>Halton</strong> and will be managed <strong>in</strong> partnership with<br />
<strong>Halton</strong> <strong>Borough</strong> <strong>Council</strong> and Widnes Vik<strong>in</strong>gs. When not <strong>in</strong> use by the Vik<strong>in</strong>gs, the i-pitch<br />
is available for the community to hire for a whole host of activities such as corporate<br />
events, birthday parties and stag do’s. It also transforms <strong>in</strong>to a five-a-side & seven-aside<br />
football and touch rugby facility dur<strong>in</strong>g the even<strong>in</strong>g and plays host to a number of<br />
local competitions. The i-pitch is open to hire. If you like to express your <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> book<strong>in</strong>g<br />
a pitch please contact a member of the i-pitch team on 0151 510 6000.<br />
<strong>Sport</strong>ivate<br />
<strong>Sport</strong>ivate is a £32 million Lottery national<br />
programme that gives 14-25 year olds access to sixweek<br />
courses <strong>in</strong> a range of sports. These sports <strong>in</strong> <strong>Halton</strong> <strong>in</strong>clude football, netball,<br />
dance/gym, table tennis and many others.<br />
The programme is aimed at those who are not currently choos<strong>in</strong>g to take part <strong>in</strong> sport<br />
<strong>in</strong> their own time, or are do<strong>in</strong>g so for a very limited amount of time, and will support<br />
them to cont<strong>in</strong>ue play<strong>in</strong>g sport <strong>in</strong> their community after the six weeks is up. Dur<strong>in</strong>g the<br />
six weeks a participant may work towards an event or personal challenge. <strong>Sport</strong>ivate<br />
is fully <strong>in</strong>clusive and we are work<strong>in</strong>g with our local sports clubs, Merseyside <strong>Sport</strong>s<br />
Partnership and National Govern<strong>in</strong>g Bodies to provide the best 6 week course of<br />
activity available, with the option to l<strong>in</strong>k <strong>in</strong> with a local team and carry that sport on<br />
after the sessions are f<strong>in</strong>ished.<br />

SPORT MAKERS<br />
The <strong>Sport</strong> Makers programme, funded by the National Lottery, will<br />
recruit tens of thousands of new sports volunteers aged 16 years<br />
and over to organise and lead community sport<strong>in</strong>g activities across the country. <strong>Sport</strong><br />
Makers are the people who directly make sport happen at the local level.<br />

Everyone who chooses to become a <strong>Sport</strong> Maker will be <strong>in</strong>vited by their county sports<br />
partnership (CSP) to come to an <strong>in</strong>spir<strong>in</strong>g workshop near to where they live or work.<br />
They will then be supported to f<strong>in</strong>d local opportunities that suit them to <strong>in</strong>crease<br />
participation <strong>in</strong> sport, and receive Adidas cloth<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
<strong>Sport</strong> Makers will organise and support hundreds of thousands of new hours of<br />
grassroots sport across the country. While do<strong>in</strong>g so, they will br<strong>in</strong>g the Olympic and<br />
Paralympic values to life <strong>in</strong> every community.<br />
<strong>Sport</strong> Makers will be fully <strong>in</strong>clusive and will run until September 2013.<br />

SPORTS LEADERS UK COURSES<br />
Young Leaders for ages 9 – 13yrs (Free of Charge)<br />
The Young Leader Award is a programme of leadership tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g for young people<br />
between the ages of 9 and 13 that promotes them work<strong>in</strong>g with younger children,<br />
teach<strong>in</strong>g leadership skills through a range of games and activities. The Young Leader<br />
Award has been designed for use <strong>in</strong> a variety of different delivery sett<strong>in</strong>gs, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g<br />
primary and secondary schools, uniformed organisations and sports and community<br />
groups that are affiliated to the local authority.<br />

The level 2 award I community sports leadership gives people aged 16+ the skills<br />
needed to plan and deliver safe sport<strong>in</strong>g and recreational activities. It develops vital<br />
leadership skills such as communication, organisation and motivation, whilst <strong>in</strong>still<strong>in</strong>g<br />
the confidence and desire <strong>in</strong> people to make a difference with their own communities.<br />
