a Herm. It is a Roman copy of a work by the<br />

famous sculptor Alkamenes (430 B.C.).<br />

Herms were stelai that usually held at the top the<br />

head of the god Hermes, protector of travellers.<br />

<strong>The</strong>y were placed beside roads and at the<br />

entrances to Sanctuaries or houses.<br />
