EXPLANATION OF PROGRAM TYPES<br />
ExPlanation of ProGram tyPEs<br />
Joint <strong>Program</strong>s of Sections is a designation for two or more Sections holding one<br />
program. These receive the first priority in scheduling.<br />
Co-Sponsored <strong>Program</strong>s of Sections are designations used for Sections holding<br />
more than one program together.<br />
Call for Papers indicates a Section selected at least one panel presenter from a<br />
“Call for Papers” proposal.<br />
Crosscutting <strong>Program</strong>s are selected after a competitive process from proposals<br />
due on April 13, 2012, by the <strong>AALS</strong> Committee on Special <strong>Program</strong>s for the<br />
Annual Meeting.<br />
Open <strong>Program</strong>s are sessions organized by law school faculty to consider the<br />
creation of a new <strong>AALS</strong> Section.<br />
Hot Topic <strong>Program</strong>s are selected after a competitive process from proposals<br />
submitted by November 2, 2012. These sessions provide a forum for a panel<br />
presentation on timely and important issue of interest that arise after April 2012.<br />
Law Review Published <strong>Program</strong>s are programs that will be published in Law<br />
Reviews and have the journal name listed directly under the program title.<br />
Business Meetings: It is necessary for each <strong>AALS</strong> Section to hold an in-person<br />
“business meeting” sometime during the <strong>AALS</strong> Annual Meeting. Many of these<br />
business meetings are quite short and take place immediately following the<br />
Section’s Annual Meeting program. During the business meeting, Sections elect<br />
officers and Executive Committee members for 2013.<br />
All Section members are encouraged to stay for the business meeting and many<br />
Sections particularly encourage attendance by those who are relatively new to<br />
teaching. Business meetings can provide a good opportunity to meet others in the<br />
field (and to express willingness to serve in the work of the Section). <strong>AALS</strong> policy<br />
encourages each <strong>AALS</strong> Section to have a diverse Executive Committee, with<br />
representatives from different geographic regions, types of schools, and length of<br />
experience in teaching.<br />
