Lieutenant STEPHEN M. BARKER, who
will be remembered as a talented cartoonist
and author and artist of the book,
We Cornellians, has received the Distinguished
Service Cross for heroism in
North Africa. An excerpt from his citation
reads: "For extraordinary heroism
in action during the period 14 to 19
February, 1943. On 14 February, 1943,
in the Kandid-Kassiria Pass, Tunisia, the
platoon commanded by Lieutenant Barker
was attacked by superior enemy forces.
Although severely wounded and weakened
from loss of blood, he refused to
allow his men to evacuate him in order
that he might remain with them, direct
their continued resistance, and lead them
to safety. After rejoining the remnants
of his company and other units, the group
was surprised and badly disorganized by
an overwhelming attack. Lieutenant
Barker assumed command of the entire
group, organized it into an effective defensive
organization, and with calmness
and excellent leadership, so skillfully
directed resistance that greatly superior
enemy forces were driven off. Retaining
leadership of this group, which was later
joined by others, he led them over 100
miles under extreme hardships and frequent
enemy attacks until friendly positions
were reached. He conscientiously
disregarded his own welfare and his first
concern was always for others. Throughout
this prolonged trip, his excellent
judgment of position, personal reconnaissances
for food and water, and continuous
control of his men, saved all of
them from capture or destruction by the
enemy and set an example of determination
and leadership worthy of the highest
praise." The weekly Army feature,
"Enough and On Time," broadcast by
the Blue Network August 14, was a
dramatization based on a letter which
Lieutenant Barker wrote to the parents
of a man in his party who was killed in
action. Recovered from his own wounds,
Lieutenant Barker is now reported to be
teaching in North Africa. He is the son
of E. EUGENE BARKER ΊO, who successively
taught Geology, Entomology, and
Plant Breeding from 1910-19.
