August 10, 1943. Lieutenant Nevius, a<br />

former Varsity runner, is stationed in<br />

Wichita Falls, Tex., where they live at<br />

'39, '40 AB; '07 AB—Lieutenant it<br />

DAVID POLLAK was reported missing in<br />

action since July 2.8, according to word<br />

received by his father, JULIAN A. POLLAK<br />

'07, 9x7 Red way Avenue, Avondale,<br />

Ohio. Lieutenant Pollak took part in<br />

air raids over Hamburg and Berlin,<br />

Germany, as pilot of a Flying Fortress.<br />

He enlisted in the Army Air Forces in<br />

March, 1942., and was commissioned at<br />

Luke Field, Ariz., last January. He went<br />

overseas early in May.<br />

'39 AB—CATHERINE M. STEFFEN has<br />

finished training as a hospital secretary<br />

for the American Red Cross at American<br />

<strong>University</strong>, Washington, D. C. She<br />

writes, "Ready to embark when the<br />

word is given. They tell us that our duties<br />

will be much broader than just secretarial,<br />

for there will be some recreation<br />

mixed in and a little of everything else."<br />

Lieutenant STEPHEN M. BARKER, who<br />

will be remembered as a talented cartoonist<br />

and author and artist of the book,<br />

We <strong>Cornell</strong>ians, has received the Distinguished<br />

Service Cross for heroism in<br />

North Africa. An excerpt from his citation<br />

reads: "For extraordinary heroism<br />

in action during the period 14 to 19<br />

February, 1943. On 14 February, 1943,<br />

in the Kandid-Kassiria Pass, Tunisia, the<br />

platoon commanded by Lieutenant Barker<br />

was attacked by superior enemy forces.<br />

Although severely wounded and weakened<br />

from loss of blood, he refused to<br />

allow his men to evacuate him in order<br />

that he might remain with them, direct<br />

their continued resistance, and lead them<br />

to safety. After rejoining the remnants<br />

of his company and other units, the group<br />

was surprised and badly disorganized by<br />

an overwhelming attack. Lieutenant<br />

Barker assumed command of the entire<br />

group, organized it into an effective defensive<br />

organization, and with calmness<br />

and excellent leadership, so skillfully<br />

directed resistance that greatly superior<br />

enemy forces were driven off. Retaining<br />

leadership of this group, which was later<br />

joined by others, he led them over 100<br />

miles under extreme hardships and frequent<br />

enemy attacks until friendly positions<br />

were reached. He conscientiously<br />

disregarded his own welfare and his first<br />

concern was always for others. Throughout<br />

this prolonged trip, his excellent<br />

judgment of position, personal reconnaissances<br />

for food and water, and continuous<br />

control of his men, saved all of<br />

them from capture or destruction by the<br />

enemy and set an example of determination<br />

and leadership worthy of the highest<br />

praise." The weekly Army feature,<br />

"Enough and On Time," broadcast by<br />

the Blue Network August 14, was a<br />

dramatization based on a letter which<br />

Lieutenant Barker wrote to the parents<br />

of a man in his party who was killed in<br />

action. Recovered from his own wounds,<br />

Lieutenant Barker is now reported to be<br />

teaching in North Africa. He is the son<br />

of E. EUGENE BARKER ΊO, who successively<br />

taught Geology, Entomology, and<br />

Plant Breeding from 1910-19.<br />

writes, "I have been busy this summer<br />

teaching folks to can the produce from<br />

their Victory Gardens. We have here a<br />

"Canning Caravan" to demonstrate<br />

from. It is a real two-wheel house trailer<br />

fully equipped as a life-size kitchen,<br />

painted red, white, and blue, very spectacular.<br />

It has attracted over 3500 persons<br />

in this area in the last six weeks. Miss<br />

Clark is associate 4-H Club agent for<br />

Broome County, her office is in the Court<br />

house, Binghamton.<br />

'40—Lieutenant THOMAS J. FARRELL, it<br />

formerly assistant manager of the Concourse<br />

Plaza Hotel, New York City, is<br />

in the Army Quartermaster Corps in<br />

North Africa. He married Cornelia Mangan<br />
