TOM SHARPE
The Wilt Inheritance
publication: 26/05/2011
price: 7.99
size: B format
pages: 336
ISBN: 9780099493136
Henry Wilt, Tom Sharpe’s beleaguered hero, returns again for another
hilarious dose of quickfire farce
Stuck in a job he doesn’t want – but can’t afford to lose – as nominal Head
of the Communications Department at Fenland University, Wilt is still
subject to the whims of The Powers That Be, both in and outside of work.
The demands of his snobbish wife Eva, and the stupendous school fees of
his despicable quadruplet daughters, cause him the biggest headaches…
apart from the hangovers, that is. When Eva signs him up for a summer
job, teaching the gun-toting idiot son of a lusty local aristocrat, Wilt is not
amused. But, as circumstances unravel and the summer goes on, Wilt sees
that the situation could be put to his financial advantage, as well as giving
Eva some headaches of her own.
With Tom Sharpe’s famous dark humour in full evidence, and an explosive
plot which takes its readers to places they never realised they wanted to
visit, The Wilt Inheritance is another instant classic from the British master
of farce.
Tom Sharpe was born in 1928 and educated at Lancing College and
Pembroke College, Cambridge. He did his National Service in the
Marines before going to South Africa in 1951, where he did social work
before teaching in Natal. He had a photographic studio in
Pietermaritzburg from 1957 until 1961. From 1963 to 1972 he was a
lecturer in History at the Cambridge College of Arts and Technology.
He is the author of sixteen bestselling novels, including Porterhouse Blue
and Blott on the Landscape which were serialised on television, and Wilt
which was made into a film and in 2010 he was awarded the
inaugural BBK La Risa de Bilbao Prize. He is married and divides his
time between Cambridge, England, and northern Spain.
One villa, four friends, a whole heap of trouble...
Beth, Ginny, Kirsten and Anna are all set for a holiday of sun, sea and
frolics. The four have been friends since university and now, as Ginny is
about to get married to Tony - Beth’s first love from university - it’s time to
catch up, reminisce, and maybe indulge in a holiday romance or two. But
the bars, clubs and beaches of their imaginings are a far cry from the slow,
quiet pace of life on Liminaki, and with nothing better to do, the girls find
themselves spending far too much time in each other’s company. As the
tension rises, old rivalries are reignited and the truth about their lives begins
to surface. Ginny really isn’t sure about Tony. Tony thinks he still loves
Beth. Beth is falling in love with Greg. Kirsten refuses to tell Jack about her
visa problems ... And Anna is finally convinced she has found true love.
Can it all be sorted out in two short weeks?
Allie Spencer is an author with many strings to her bow. She gained a
BA in English and Related Literature and an MA in Medieval Studies
before reading for the Bar. She completed pupillage in London with a
leading set of family law barristers and then joined a firm of solicitors
as a matrimonial specialist.
She is the author of two novels: Tug of Love, which won the Romantic
Novelists’ Association New Writers’ Scheme prize for the best debut of
2009 and was shortlisted for the 2010 Melissa Nathan Award for
Comedy Romance, and The Not-So-Secret Diary of a City Girl.
