This series is divided into five distinct sections, based upon the original filing systems used by<br />

Galbraith‘s secretaries over a span of 74 years.<br />

The first three sections are divided into three date spans (1932-1947, 1948-1964, 1965-1974) <strong>and</strong><br />

are organized alphabetically, thereunder chronologically within the date span. Types of material<br />

include letters received <strong>and</strong> sent, telegrams, clippings, reports <strong>and</strong> other materials relating to <strong>John</strong><br />

Kenneth Galbraith's activities, writings, speeches <strong>and</strong> other matters.<br />

The fourth section overlaps the second <strong>and</strong> third section <strong>and</strong> consists of correspondence from 1960<br />

to 2005. Correspondence has been arranged in alphabetical order, thereunder in chronological or<br />

reverse chronological depending on the original filing system. Materials in this section mainly<br />

consist of correspondence between Galbraith <strong>and</strong> various committees <strong>and</strong> organizations, as well as<br />

with specific individuals.<br />

The fifth section, a yearly file spanning from 1975 to Galbraith‘s death in 2006, is arranged<br />

chronologically, thereunder alphabetically. Materials include correspondence, clippings, reports <strong>and</strong><br />

other materials relating to Galbraith's professional activities, writings, speeches <strong>and</strong> other matters,<br />

as well as correspondence with committees, organizations, <strong>and</strong> specific individuals.<br />

Notable materials in this series include correspondence between Galbraith <strong>and</strong> various members of<br />

the <strong>Kennedy</strong> family including Robert, Edward <strong>and</strong> Jacqueline <strong>Kennedy</strong>, as well as with Averell<br />

Harriman, George McGovern, the Bhutto family, President <strong>John</strong>son, Henry Kissinger, Eugene<br />

McCarthy, <strong>and</strong> William Buckley. Also included is correspondence regarding Mr. Galbraith‘s<br />

books; such as The Affluent Society <strong>and</strong> The Great Crash; keynote addresses <strong>and</strong> invitations to<br />

speak to audiences; various political campaigns; <strong>and</strong> his affiliation with Harvard University.<br />
