Jorgensen, who is vice president for business and finance at Morningside, was also appointed board representative-atlarge for the executive committee of the United Way of Siouxland for 2003-2004. Pamela Miller-Smith accepted a position as a finance manager in the Credit and Compliance Department at Gateway, Inc., North Sioux City, S.D. She was also elected as a new member of the Siouxland Humane Society Board for the 2003-2004 year. Brent Plantage is chair of the finance division of the United Way of Siouxland’s 2003-2004 campaign. 1983 Susan (Richmann) Chartier made a presentation at the 2003 Council for Exceptional Children annual conference in Seattle, Wash. Chartier, a special education consultant at Western Hills Area Education Agency 12, Sioux City, presented the session titled “Managing Your Para-educator to Effectively Work with Students” along with fellow Western Hills Area Education Agency staff member Carla Lee. Marlin Jeffers was elected president of the Western Hills Area Education Agency 12 Professional Staff Association for 2003-2004. Jeffers has also been selected as a state trainer for the National Education Association/Iowa State Education Association “I Can Do It!” program, which is designed to help teachers and support staff professionals improve their instruction and classroom behavior management skills. 1984 MEET YOUR CLASS EDITOR Joan (Phillips) Slavens, Denton, Texas has worked as a legal assistant in Dallas, Texas since 1988 and attended Texas Woman’s University in Denton to complete courses for teacher certification in English, language arts, and reading. Jepson, a native of Onawa, has appeared in many of the leading opera houses in the United States and Europe. Flora (McNeal) Lee was elected as a member-at-large of Western Hills Area Education Agency 12 Professional Staff Association for 2003-2004. Dr. Paul Parmelee was a guest speaker in a fifth-grade science class at Franklin Elementary School, Le Mars, Iowa, in May. Parmelee is a family physician at Medical Associates, Le Mars. Curtis Turner is a K-5 teacher at Woodbury County Alternative School, Sergeant Bluff, Iowa. 1985 Randy Peters, a professional singer in Minneapolis, Minn., returned to his home town of Moville, Iowa, as the headliner for a concert of musical theater at Woodbury Central High School in June. Among those who joined Peters on stage 28 | MORNINGSIDER were Bob Barry 1983, Bette Skewis 1983, and Nancy Walker 1985. Proceeds from the concert went to help support the Moville Town Players’ summer theater season and the Woodbury Central theater department. 1986 Paul Bergmann is a board member for the Siouxland Area Chapter of the American Red Cross. Jon Buck is the chair of the Dakota County division of the United Way of Siouxland’s 2003-2004 campaign. Buck is a research analyst at Great West Casualty. Leslie (Henningsen) Garman is the executive director of the American Heart Association (AHA) chapter in Des Moines, Iowa. Garman is responsible for the metro division board of the AHA and all of its fund raising within Polk County. Michelle (Thomsen) Henry is a clinical training coordinator at the Community Health Center of Snohomish County, Wash. Pat Rogers was named a partner at the insurance firm of Luse-Etler-Goodwin, Inc., Moville, Iowa. Rogers, a 13-year veteran of the property and casualty insurance business, holds professional designations of Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) and Associate in Risk Management (ARM). Joel Steenhoven is a board member for the Siouxland Area Chapter of the American Red Cross. 1987 Todd Armstrong is a sixth grade teacher at Santiago Christian School in the Dominican Republic. Troy A. Jasman, executive director of administrative services and chief financial officer for Western Iowa Tech Community College, Sioux City, was selected as one of the college’s two sponsored representatives to the 2003-2004 Community College Leadership Institute Consortium (CLIC). Valorie Kruse is a member of the board of directors for the Crittenton Center, a nonprofit, human service agency serving Iowa, Nebraska, and South Dakota. 1988 Dan Camarigg joined RBC Dain Rauscher, Sioux City, as an associate vice presidentfinancial consultant. Deanna Cloud is the recipient of the 2003 Deb Dalziel Award given annually by the Iowa Small Business Development Centers (SBDC). Cloud is president of Marvel Media, Inc. of Sioux City. The Deb Dalziel award is awarded to women who have significantly improved or changed their own personal situation, thus having an impact on others around them. Tom LoVan was re-elected to the board of directors of the United Way of Siouxland for 2003-2004. LoVan is a pastor at Morningside Lutheran Church. Cynthia (Stevens) Van Horn and her husband John reported that they had a daughter, Katherine “Katie” RosaLee, who was born on Oct. 3, 2003, at Mary Greeley Hospital, Ames, Iowa, and “went to the Lord’s loving arms” on Oct. 5, 2003, at the University of Iowa Hospitals, Iowa City, Iowa. The couple has two other children, a son Daniel and a daughter Marla. 1990 MEET YOUR CLASS EDITOR 90 voice chorale, 75-voice junior high mixed Tom Gerking is in his fourteenth year of teaching 7-12 vocal music at Westwood Community School, Sloan, Iowa, where he directs the 120-voice mixed chorus, 52- chorus, three show choirs, the fall musical, and the Renaissance Madrigal Feast. He is also advisor to the Westwood Student Councils. He is a member and officer of the Northwest Iowa Director’s Association, serves as Northwest District Chair to the Iowa Choral Director’s Association, and is director of the Immaculate Conception Church Choir in Sioux City.
