Appointments to National Organizations<br />

James Borin, MD, assistant pr<strong>of</strong>essor,<br />

department <strong>of</strong> surgery, was named to <strong>the</strong><br />

editorial boards <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Journal <strong>of</strong> Endourology<br />

Part B: Videourology and <strong>the</strong> Internet Journal <strong>of</strong><br />

Urology. Additionally, Borin was recognized by<br />

<strong>the</strong> American Urological <strong>Association</strong> Foundation<br />

for organizing prostate cancer screening<br />

events throughout Baltimore.<br />

Kenneth H. Butler, DO, associate pr<strong>of</strong>essor,<br />

and Cynthia S. Shen, DO, MS, clinical<br />

assistant pr<strong>of</strong>essor, both from <strong>the</strong> department<br />

<strong>of</strong> emergency medicine, have been named fellows<br />

Jeanne Spurlock Minority Fellowship Achievement<br />

Wonodi is a former fellow <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> program<br />

and is founder <strong>of</strong> The African Alliance on<br />

Mental Illness, which works to de-stigmatize<br />

Myron Levine, MD, DTPH, pr<strong>of</strong>essor,<br />

department <strong>of</strong> medicine, and director, center<br />

for vaccine development, and Christopher<br />

Plowe, MD, pr<strong>of</strong>essor, department <strong>of</strong> medicine,<br />

and chief, malaria section, center for<br />

vaccine development, attended <strong>the</strong> Malaria<br />

Eradication Research Agenda (malERA) Zenith<br />

Week in Arlington, Va., in March. Funded by<br />

<strong>the</strong> Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, <strong>the</strong><br />

malERA project has worked for two years to<br />

define a research agenda for global malaria<br />

eradication. Both Levine and Plowe served on<br />

<strong>the</strong> malERA steering committee, and Levine<br />

chaired an international advisory committee<br />

<strong>of</strong> renowned scientists who have led<br />

campaigns to eradicate smallpox and o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

diseases. Plowe chaired <strong>the</strong> malERA group on<br />

drugs and presented recommendations to a<br />

leadership council that included <strong>the</strong> directors<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> National Institute <strong>of</strong> Allergy and Infectious<br />

Diseases, <strong>the</strong> World Health Organization,<br />

<strong>the</strong> Roll Back Malaria Partnership, <strong>the</strong><br />

Wellcome Trust, as well as <strong>the</strong> global health<br />

program <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Gates Foundation.<br />

Michael Makley, MD, assistant pr<strong>of</strong>essor,<br />

department <strong>of</strong> neurology, presented two posters<br />

at <strong>the</strong> World Congress on Brain Injury in<br />

Washington, DC, in March. They were entitled<br />

“Aspiration Pneumonia Associated with <strong>the</strong><br />

Use <strong>of</strong> Dantrolene Sodium in Low Level<br />

Responsive Patients with Traumatic Brain<br />

Injury” and “Tactile Defensive Behavior on a<br />

Rehabilitation Unit Following Moderate to Severe<br />

Brain Injury.” Makley also gave a platform<br />

presentation entitled “Sleep Efficiency and<br />

Resolution <strong>of</strong> Post Traumatic Amnesia after<br />

Closed Head Injury.”<br />

Amal Mattu, ’93, pr<strong>of</strong>essor, department<br />

<strong>of</strong> emergency medicine, co-directed and<br />

instructed a five-hour electrocardiography<br />

workshop during <strong>the</strong> 13th Congress <strong>of</strong> Chest<br />

Pain Centers, held in Las Vegas in April. His<br />

lectures were titled “ST-Elevation Myocardial<br />

Infarction (STEMI) Recognition,” “Confounding<br />

Patterns in STEMI” and “Mimics <strong>of</strong> Cardiac<br />

Ischemia.” Additionally, in May, Mattu was<br />

<strong>the</strong> sole U.S. faculty member at Canada’s<br />

largest annual emergency medicine conference,<br />

<strong>the</strong> 23rd Annual North York General<br />

Hospital Emergency Medicine Update, held in<br />

Toronto. He presented a lecture entitled “The<br />

Crashing Asthmatic: Pearls and Pitfalls” and<br />

conducted a two-hour session on care <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

elderly patient in <strong>the</strong> emergency department<br />

as well as a two-hour workshop on manag-<br />

ing cardiac dysrhythmias. He also served as<br />

<strong>the</strong> emergency cardiology expert in a session<br />

entitled “How <strong>the</strong> Experts Think: Emergency<br />

Cardiology Cases.”<br />

at Semmelweis Uni-<br />

versity, <strong>the</strong> conference was attended by 135<br />

investigators, post-doctoral fellows, and students<br />

from 37 countries. Presentations were<br />

given by leaders in <strong>the</strong> fields <strong>of</strong> mitochondrial<br />

research and energy metabolism. A special<br />

issue <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Journal <strong>of</strong> Neuroscience Research,<br />

co-edited by McKenna, will be published in<br />

2011 with manuscripts from <strong>the</strong> meeting.<br />

McKenna is one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> founders <strong>of</strong> this series<br />

<strong>of</strong> international meetings related to brain<br />

energy metabolism.<br />
