Ein Stück mit Musik
Klavierauszug
All the King’s Men
Richard Rodney Bennett (music)
Beverley Cross (libretto)
Bennett’s moving opera for young people is a classic in its genre and continues to achieve success in many parts
of the world. The story is set in the time of the English Civil War at the siege of Gloucester in 1643. A certain Dr
Chillingworth has been enrolled by the King’s Council of War. His suggested way of taking the town is to construct a
Roman style “tortoise” to bridge the river Severn and form a covered way over the city walls. It is renamed “Humpty-
Dumpty”. Their plan is foiled by the roundheads and it collapses into the river where “all the King’s horses and all
the King’s men” were unable to rescue it. The opera ends poignantly with the appearance of the little drummer boy
who, after the horrors of battle, reflects on the senselessness of war. “You can’t dig fields with drumsticks, you can’t
plough with a gun”. He was not even sure who had won or who had lost.
Scored for solo singers, speaking parts, choruses and school orchestra 2.1.2.1-2.2.1.0 – glock, xyl, chime bars, perc,
Die Dreigroschenoper / The Threepenny Opera X))
Kurt Weill (music)
Bertolt Brecht (German adaptation)
Based on Elisabeth Hauptmann’s translation of “The Beggar’s Opera” by John Gay
English lyrics by Michael Feingold
First performed in 1928, The Threepenny Opera is one of the first collaborations between Kurt Weill and Bertolt
Brecht. With the combination of Weill’s musical style and Brecht’s political comment, it has become a classic of
modern musical theatre. This new edition, prepared by Edward Harsh, is based on the critical edition of the work
and is edited by Stephen Hinton and Edward Harsh. It was published in 2000 and can be used with the 1928 libretto
and critical edition of the full score.
The show opens with one of the most well-known songs of the 20 th century: Mack the Knife. The song tells of his
infamous deeds and sets the tone of the story that follows. The scene is London Soho’s underworld before the
coronation of Queen Victoria.
To summarise – Jonathan Peachum, all-powerful controller of the local beggars, is out to get the notorious Macheath
(Mack the Knife) for his involvement with his daughter, Polly. In a confrontation with her parents, Polly lets slip that
Macheath is an old friend of the Chief of Police who has saved him from arrest, many times. The Peachums use this
knowlege to their own advantage by bribing Mac’s former girl-friend to betray him to the police. The plot becomes,
in fact, much more convoluted but Mac is imprisoned, twice – and the second time is facing execution when a
messenger appears with a reprieve from the queen who has granted him a castle, title and a pension. The cast sing
the finale requesting that wrongdoers should not be punished too severely.
School Opera in 2 Acts
Kurt Weill (music)
Bertolt Brecht (libretto)
English translation: J. M. Potts
Although taken from the Japanese Noh play “Taniko”, the music for this school opera in 2 acts is entirely western in
origin. Bertholt Brecht’s play is one of his “Lehrstücke” (teaching plays), written to instruct the young. A boy is part
of a small party journeying high into the mountains, his mission is to bring back medicine for his ailing mother. The
journey is too much for him, he falls ill and agrees to have himself hurled down the precipice so the expedition can
proceed – a self-sacrificing act for the greater “collective” good. Scored for a small number of soloists and chorus,
this opera is best staged simply.
Cinderella Jones
James Rae and Mike Cornick
Aimed at the lower secondary age group and above, this hilariously funny version of Cinderella takes some
unexpected twists and turns and ends quite differently from the usual story. The quiet and studious Sally
(Cinderella) Jones is lamenting the fact that she, unlike her sisters, has not been invited to the disco dance
at Decibelles. Her sisters are excited about meeting the DJ and local heart-throb – Matt Vinyl. Aided by the
appearance of the Fairy Godmother and part-time double-glazing saleswoman, Patti O’Dawes and other
unlikely characters, Sally eventually makes it to the disco and even wins the dancing competition. Matt, not
a person of great modesty, announces the prize – a date with, none other than – himself. But Sally has to
leave of course and naturally without her shoes. The story ends happily and in an unexpected way as it has
been pointed out to Sally that there are many more worthwhile goals for her to aspire to than winning a
date with Matt Vinyl! The show ends on an optimistic and positive note with the entire cast singing the final
number Aim High!
Cinderella Jones includes a CD with backing tracks, lots of amusing sound effects and, for making learning
easier, recordings of the songs by professional vocalists. Teachers have the option of staging the show using
the CD throughout or providing live accompaniments, or to use a combination of both. This musical is a
flexible “production package” and is easily adapted to suit resources.
