presentations, opera <strong>and</strong> the zarzuela <strong>and</strong> their cont<strong>in</strong>uity <strong>in</strong>to the <strong>American</strong> period, <strong>and</strong><br />

the plethora <strong>of</strong> musicians <strong>and</strong> the extensive musical <strong>in</strong>frastructure beh<strong>in</strong>d them. On<br />

another level, other future studies on Quiapo music may <strong>in</strong>volve the politics <strong>of</strong> private<br />

<strong>and</strong> public musical patronage, music <strong>and</strong> revolution, the confluence <strong>of</strong> musics <strong>and</strong> faiths,<br />

the Indian <strong>and</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>ese musical presence, musical acculturation, the modernization <strong>of</strong> old<br />

traditions, <strong>and</strong> the globalization <strong>of</strong> music <strong>and</strong> the blurr<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> cultural boundaries <strong>in</strong> a<br />

pervasively pluralistic “global village” but all uniquely <strong>and</strong> paradoxically susta<strong>in</strong>ed by a<br />

centuries-old tradition: the devotion to the Lord <strong>of</strong> Quiapo, the Black Nazarene.<br />
