Penguins: New Faces—Same Goal Pre-Season Wrap Up Looking Forward to New Hockey Season By Sarah Tucek BOYCE STUDENT The hockey season has started up once again, but first lets go back and see how the Pittsburgh Penguins ended their season last year. They made it to the playoffs again; the first round was against the Ottawa Senators, which the Penguins defeated in six games. The second round was against the Montreal Canadians. Some could’ve thought that this game was going to be easy (I know I did) because the Canadians were the eighth seed. Then unexpectedly it came to game seven in the Mellon Arena, and the Canadians came out on top, with the score 5-2. That was the last to play in the famous Mellon or Civic Arena. During the summer the Penguins had time to relax and clear their heads from the disappointing finish to a great season. While they were all relaxing, construction workers were busy trying to finish the new “arena,”the Consol Energy Center. It is right across from, the now, old arena. The differences between the old and new arena is that the Mellon was a dome and only had windows around the bottom edge. Consol Energy Center has windows all over the building; the fans will be able to look out on the beautiful city during period breaks. Plus the Consol is a lot bigger than the Mellon with a capacity of 18,087. Now it’s up and running, ready for the Penguins. Also during the summer Ray Shero, the general manager, and other Penguin employers were busy trying to make the Penguins team a lot stronger than before. One guy they picked up was Mike Comrie, a winger who was on the Edmonton Oilers. They gave him a one year contract, which he gladly accepted. He has said that he wants to compete for the Stanley Cup and believes he can help the Penguins with that goal. The second new player is Paul Martin, a defender, and he has played with the New Jersey Devils. Martin is under a five- year contract with the Penguins. Shero and the head coach, Dan Blysma, want the defense stronge, especially with losing key defender, Sergei Gonchar, to the Ottawa Senators. That’s how Martin steps in; he is poised with the puck and can also be a part of the offense at times. Another defender the Penguins chose was Zbynek Michalek from the Phoenix Coyotes. He is also under a five-year contract with the team. He contributes by making the defense stronger because he is not afraid to give up his body in front of a shot. Also he can quickly shutdown other players and can get the puck out of the zone swiftly. The last major player they grabbed was Aaron Asham, a winger from the Philadelphia Flyers. Like Comrie’s contract, Asham is signed for one year in Pittsburgh. The Penguins are grateful to have him because they know he is tough to play against. Now some youngsters from the minor league are coming up and may be able to play beside Sydney Crosby, Evengi Malkin or Jordan Staal. Some are Eric Tangradi, Nick Johnson, Mark Letestu and Dustin Jeffery. Having players set, the next step was to see how well they would play together during the pre-season. The first game was against the Detroit Red Wings, which the Penguins beat, 5-1. The scorers were Brett Sterling, Comrie, Crosby and Ryan Craig, who scored Joe Hanna is the number one golfer in the school and represented Boyce in the recently completed state tournament. He also won the intramural long drive contest and the miniature golf tourney by two strokes, held at Willows driving range. Plum High graduate Sean Derry leads his two man team to victory in the quarterfinals of the bocce tournament. Final results were not available at press time. two goals. The goaltender, Marc Andre Fleury, saved 20 out of 21 shots, and then Theissen came in to replace Fleury. The Penguins played the Columbus Blue Jackets in the second game, barely beating them, 5-4. New players won this game for the Penguins, Asham, Mike Rupp, Chris Kunitz, Johnson and Comrie. Brett Johnson was now the starting goalie, making 18 saves out of 21 shots, and then John Curry came in making 15 saves out of 16 shots. The third pre season game was against the Blue Jackets. Yet again the Penguins beat them 3-1. Pascal Dupuis, Malkin and Asham all scored to beat the Blue Jackets. Fleury was in goal having a phenomenal game, making 32 saves out of 33 shots. The fourth game was against the Chicago Blackhawks, beating them 4-1. Brett Johnson started as goalie and Malkin, Jeffery, Nick Johnson and Mark Letestu made the Penguins win that game. The fifth preseason game was against the Chicago Blackhawks, giving the Penguins their first loss, 5-2. The only scorers for the Penguins were Alex Goligoski and Craig Adams. The final game was against the Detroit Red Wings, which the Penguins did win 5-1. Comrie scored twice then Kuntiz, Malkin and Goligoski each added a point. Fleury yet again made 22 saves to steal the game away. Since the pre season is over everyone can focus on the regular season. Even though the Pens lost their home opener to the Philadelphia Flyers and then the next to the Montreal Canadiens, fans know they can shake off those losses and learn from their early- season mistakes. Hopefully the Penguins will have an amazing season in the new arena with some new guys and come out on top again to win the Stanley Cup. Graduating?
