In herausragender Tafelmalerei schafft der junge Alpay Efe Stillleben, Akte oder Erzählbilder, die sich an der Tradition akademischer Malerei
orientieren und die er durch Innovation neu inszeniert. Einzelfiguren und komplexere Szenen seiner Werkreihe „legends“ sind von antiker
Mythologie inspiriert. Seine Atelierstillleben in Öl auf gerahmten Holztafeln wirken durch die gedeckte Farbigkeit wie Kabinettbilder alter
Meister. Näher betrachtet betonen seine Arbeiten die Diskrepanz zwischen Alltagskultur und zeitloser Kunstsphäre. In seinen beseelten
Menschendarstellungen hebt Efe die Aktualität mit Straßenkleidung hervor. Seine Figuren zeichnen sich durch lebendige Präsenz aus oder
irritieren wie in „Secondary light“ durch artifizielle Lichtsituationen. In seinen Akten beschränkt Efe den Körper oft auf den Torso, auf einen
Ausschnitt der Wirklichkeit. Auch sind seine Frauen gar nicht ganz unbekleidet, Strümpfe oder Wäsche lassen die Körper umso intensiver
wirken. Seine „Psyche“ bezieht sich in Pose und Draperie auf Frederic Leighton. Mit Ohrsteckern, Manga-Stoff und Teaktisch transferiert
Efe die Darstellung in unsere Zeit. In „Sirens“ lockt ein Modell in drei Posen - iPod und Kopfhörer sind Referenz ihres unwiderstehlichen
Gesangs. Zwei weitere Sirenen umringen einen jungen „Odysseus“. Der blonde Junge hat die Arme hinter dem Rücken, da er gegen die
mythologische Weiblichkeit nichts ausrichten kann. In „Girl with the golden fleece“ verbindet Efe alte Erzählstränge mit dem Heute, wenn
er eine junge Asiatin in das sagenhafte Fell hüllt. Wird im Kostümfilm darauf geachtet, Zeitgrenzen zu wahren, sind diese
Grenzverletzungen bei Efe kalkuliert, wie in seinem Selbstportrait als „Ianus“ in Lederjacke und Captain America T-Shirt. Mit dem Gesicht
im Spiegel wird er zum Helden seiner neuen Perspektiven auf alte Erzählmotive.
Alpay Efe is well known for his extraordinary paintings on panels and concentrates on still-life, nude and conversation pieces. Based on academic
tradition, his work has become quite innovative. His figures and the complex scenes of his series ‘legends’ are inspired by ancient mythology.
His framed still-life paintings in oil on panel reflect the cabinet paintings of the old masters as they take advantage of a subdued palette.
With close intention to detail, the contrast of every day culture and the timeless sphere of the art world is expressed in all of his still-life
paintings. Through every day street wear the painter puts emphasis on the human condition of his soulful portraits. His figures are quite
convincing and vivid due to his use of artificial light as in his painting ‘Secondary light’. In his life studies, the painter often accentuates the torso,
which in turn idealizes the human figure. His female nudes offer certain intensity through the use of every day lingerie, stockings and
accessories. His ‘Psyche’ echoes Frederic Leighton through pose and drapery. Using contemporary items such as the pearl earings, the
manga-fabric and the proverbial teak table, Efe bridges his motive to our time. His seducing ‘Sirens’ in three different poses are equipped
with iPod and earphones, in reference to their irresistible sound. In the painting ‘Odysseus’ two other Sirens surround the young voyager.
The male figure of the blonde is presented with his arms behind him, giving the impression he is helpless. In one of his most interesting
works, the ‘Girl with the golden fleece’, the painter again draws our attention to this bridge between the old conversation piece and today,
showing a young Asian woman dressed up in the sought after fur. Whereas film directors have always paid close attention of the authenticity
of a certain time period, Efe is looking for such contradictions. Through his reflection in the mirror wearing leatherjacket and t-shirt, Alpay Efe
himself posing as ‘Ianus’ becomes a modern day protagonist, opening a new perspective to interpret the energy between past and present.
