Yo también voté. Me fui al Internet animada – o empujada - por mi muy patriota peruana amiga Ana y, tras echarle un vistazo a las<br />

candidatas a maravilla, voté. <strong>La</strong> Alambra por ser española, las pirámides de Egipto porque además las conozco, y por supuesto el<br />

Machu Picchu, porque entre otras cosas y sabiendo como es, no hubiera tenido valor de mirar a mi amiga a la cara y decirle que la<br />

maravilla peruana no se encontraban entre mis favoritas.<br />

Total, que llega este tal aventurero suizo Bernard Weber y como quien no quiere la cosa monta un circo mediático de agarrarse la<br />

peluca, provocando la mayor votación de la historia de Internet, y luego, con un pellizquito de cultura y un buen chorro de oro de divisa<br />

turística, logra maravillar al mundo entero. El resto es historia, y todo esto, según versión oficial, para defender el patrimonio universal e<br />

interesar a las masas por la cultura, ¡y hay que reconocer que lo consiguieron!<br />

No entremos en si ha sido un gran negocio, ni en si tiene o no sentido. Yo me admiro de los que tienen ese talento especial para crear<br />

una visión, creérsela y encima vendérsela a los demás. Es más, los envidio. Por otro lado, no me considero una aguafiestas, pero hay<br />

algo en la forma en que últimamente todo se mide por el rasero del marketing que deja un cierto olor a chamuscado, y mientras que no<br />

critico ninguna de estas actividades que ponen a buen uso al Internet y que pretenden culturizar y movilizar, si me pregunto qué pasaría<br />

si en lugar de promocionar maravillas geográficas, por un momento habláramos en especie e imagináramos que todo ese esfuerzo de<br />

movilización mundial hubiera servido para alcanzar otro tipo de maravillas.Así, por ejemplo, imaginemos que se erradicarse la<br />

sobrepoblación de algunos países, que se esfumasen la religión y la política mal entendidas, que desapareciese el abuso infantil o se<br />

solucionase la pobreza además de borrar la corrupción y la violencia. <strong>La</strong> primera maravilla sería, por supuesto, ver resuelto, de una vez<br />

por todas, el hambre feroz que azota a gran parte de la humanidad.<br />

No acabo de comprender cómo podemos celebrar Olimpiadas, que por cierto, yo no me pierdo, o ver películas o eventos deportivos de<br />

los que los protagonistas ganan millones y millones al año. No entiendo como podemos volcarnos tan apasionadamente en la elección<br />

de legados históricos, cuando la población de un continente entero está a punto de desaparecer consumido por la enfermedad, la miseria<br />

y por las aguas del Atlántico; cuando en pleno siglo XXI existen seres humanos que no tienen derecho a decir lo que piensan, y ni tan<br />

siquiera a pensar; cuando la violencia, en toda su gama de posibilidades y en el mejor de los casos nos ha coartado la espontaneidad y<br />

nos tiene paralizados; cuando males sociales como la corrupción, las drogas y el abuso infantil acechan literalmente en cada esquina. Y<br />

ya no hablemos ni de la deforestación, ni de la destrucción de la capa de ozono, ni del envenenamiento de las aguas, ni del peor de los<br />

peores males NUEVOS de nuestro mundo: el hambre.<br />

Está muy bien preservar los legados históricos y culturales, o viajar al espacio, o celebrar eventos deportivos universales. Pero, ahora<br />

que sabemos que este modelo de movimiento cibernético funciona o que somos capaces de movilizarnos de forma tan imponente, ¿no<br />

podríamos aplicarlo, pero de verdad, para que ningún niño del mundo pase hambre, ni sea explotado, ni maltratado y para<br />

que todos tengan una oportunidad justa de futuro? Pregunto.<br />

I voted too. I went on the Internet encouraged – or, pressured – by my very patriotic Peruvian friend Ana and, after taking a look to the<br />

Wonder candidates, I voted. <strong>La</strong> Alambra because it is from Spain; also the Egyptian Pyramids, because I have seen them, and of<br />

course, Machu Picchu, because, among other things, and knowing her, I would not have the courage to look at my friend in the face and<br />

tell her that the Peruvian Wonder was not among my favorites.<br />

So this Swiss adventurer, Bernard Weber, as if it were no big deal, stages this huge media circus, unraveling the largest voting spree in<br />

the history of the Internet, and then, with a little pinch of culture, and a good dash of tourist currency gold, is able to amaze the entire<br />

world. The rest is history. And all that, according to the official version, in defense of the universal heritage, and to<br />

get the masses interested in culture. And that they did!<br />

Let us not get into whether it was a profitable business, or whether or not it made sense. I am always in awe of those who are equipped<br />

with that special talent which enables them to create a vision, buy into it, and then sell it to others. As a matter of fact, I envy them. On<br />

the other hand, I do not consider myself a party pooper, but there is something about the way in which lately everything is measured by<br />

its marketing potential that leaves behind a scorched after-odor. While I do not criticize any of these activities which put the Internet to<br />

good use and try to spread and mobilize, I do ask myself what would happen if instead of promoting geographic wonders, for a moment<br />

we went in-kind and we imagined that this whole world mobilizing effort could serve to achieve a different type of Wonders. According to<br />

this, for example, the overpopulation of some countries would be eradicated, misconceived religions and politics would be vanished,<br />

child abuse would cease to exist and poverty would be resolved, in addition to erasing corruption and violence. The first Wonder would<br />

have to be seeing, of course, an end once and for all, to the fierce hunger, that whips a great portion of humankind.<br />

I cannot quite grasp how we can celebrate Olympic Games, which, by the way, I never miss, or watch movies or sports events, the<br />

main characters of which make millions and millions a year. I cannot understand how we are able to so passionately support the voting<br />

of historical legacy, when the population of an entire continent is about to disappear consumed by disease, by misery and by the Atlantic<br />

waters; or when well into the 21 st Century, there are human beings who do not have the right to voice an opinion, and not even to have<br />

one; when violence, in all its range of possibilities and in the best case scenario, has stifled out spontaneity and has us paralyzed; when<br />

social evils such as corruption, drugs and child abuse, are literally lurking around each corner. And let us not even talk about<br />

deforestation, or the destruction of the ozone layer, nor the poisoning of our waters. Let us not talk about the worst of the worst of the<br />

NEW evils of our world: Hunger.<br />

Preserving a historical and cultural legacy, traveling to outer space or celebrating universal sporting events are all good things. However,<br />

now that we know that this type of cyberspace movement model works, and that it is possible to mobilize ourselves in such an<br />

impressive way, could we not apply it, but for real this time, so that no child in the world goes hungry, nor he or she is exploited, nor<br />

abused, and so that they will all have a fair chance for their future? Just asking.<br />

proyecto del embalse del Amazonas tan<br />

elogiado por líderes empresariales como<br />

medio de prevenir la posible escasez<br />

energética, aunque criticado por los<br />

expertos en medio ambiente como un<br />

desastre ecológico en potencia. Su<br />

aprobación por parte de la agencia<br />

nacional de protección medioambiental<br />

Monday to a massive Amazon dam project<br />

praised by business leaders as a way to<br />

prevent possible energy shortages but<br />

criticized by environmentalists as a<br />

potential environmental disaster. The<br />

approval by the Ibama national<br />

environmental protection agency means<br />

companies can soon begin bidding to<br />

construct the project, which would<br />

generate electricity and allow barges to<br />

navigate 2,600 miles to upstream<br />

tributaries in Peru and Bolivia. Other<br />

permits must also be obtained before the<br />

multiple dam project gets under way, but<br />

Monday’s move was a key regulatory step<br />

and is sure to prompt big construction<br />

companies to line up to participate in the<br />

project expected to cost 20 billion to 28<br />

billion reals ($10 billion to $14.7 billion).<br />

soccer legend Pele last month. In Jamaica,<br />

bandits ripped up tracks and cables from<br />

an old Kingston railway station. Even the<br />

U.S. has not escaped. In Fort Wayne,<br />

Ind., thousands of dollars worth of copper<br />

gutters were stripped from a church in the<br />

middle of the night last month. Theft of<br />

scrap metal has increased sharply in<br />

recent years as prices have risen. Copper<br />

is the most tempting target because it<br />

reforms that would allow Mexico’s Roman<br />

Catholic Church to get involved in politics.<br />

Florencio Salazar, deputy secretary of<br />

religious affairs for the Interior Department,<br />

said Wednesday that the government is<br />

too busy to consider a proposal by the<br />

Archdiocese of Mexico to give the clergy<br />

«total» freedom of expression in political<br />

affairs and to let public schools offer<br />

religious education.<br />

«We do not see any possibility for this<br />

issue being dealt with right now,» Salazar<br />

said. He did not say when the government<br />

Tipitapa, where the cartel members are<br />

incarcerated, led police to a stash of<br />

weapons and ammunition,» Sevilla said.

El primer Premio Medalla Cortez jamás celebrado – que reconoce la excelencia en<br />

radiodifusión Hispana – fue entregado la pasada semana a nuestro Rafael Orlando<br />

en la Conferencia de Radio Hispana Radio Ink.<br />

Rafael Orlando Dosman, Director de programación y locutor del programa de la mañana de <strong>930</strong>am<br />

<strong>La</strong> <strong>Exitosa</strong> (WYUS) fue elegido como personalidad del año de las emisoras de radio de los EE.UU. en los<br />

mercados 11 +. Rafael fue honrado con este galardón entre cientos de participantes de todo el país en el<br />

formato más atractivo – la radio hispana.<br />

Hace ya doce años que las ondas radiofónicas del sur de <strong>Delaware</strong> se oyen en español en la voz de<br />

Rafael Orlando. Este señor de enorme bigote y gran carisma, comenzó emitiendo en español dos horas<br />

los sábados. Conforme fue creciendo la comunidad hispana de la zona, fueron aumentando también las<br />

horas de programación en español de esta emisora que en la actualidad emite las veinticuatro horas del<br />

día durante los siete días de la semana.<br />

Rafael Orlando comenzó su carrera radiofónica en su Panamá natal en 1974 y se vino a vivir a<br />

<strong>Delaware</strong> en 1995 donde ha trabajado desde entonces con mucho éxito en <strong>La</strong> <strong>Exitosa</strong> (WYUS)<br />

durante los últimos 12 años.<br />

Sobre el galardón recibido, Rafael orlando dice, “significa ver el esfuerzo, no sólo<br />

hablando en mi persona sino en las diferentes personas que han hecho que esto sea<br />

realidad. En un estado tan pequeño como lo es <strong>Delaware</strong> es importante ver que si<br />

hay personas que están tratando de que la radio y la prensa lleven este mensaje<br />

de informativo cultural y de entretenimiento a sus oyentes y lectores. Espero que<br />

en el futuro haya más hispanos a los que se les puedan reconocer sus labores de<br />

comunicación.<br />

“Para mi la radio es sumamente importante como instrumento de<br />

comunicación, sobre todo en esta área debido a que sin la radio los hispanos<br />

no tienen ninguna forma de informarse de lo que está sucediendo local o<br />

internacionalmente. Les informamos de los retrasos por el mal tiempo, les acercamos<br />

la información local sobre las oficinas públicas de salud. <strong>La</strong> radio es lo más efectivo.”<br />

¿Qué le duele a este hombre de la radio? “Lo que más me inquieta es cómo a<br />

veces tratan a las personas hispanas en ciertos lugares. No sólo a los<br />

indocumentados, sino que es como si fueran todos del mismo lugar, de<br />

una calidad más baja que cualquier anglo. No los tratan con el<br />

mismo respeto.”<br />

¿Qué le hace sonreír? “Sonrío cuando veo que<br />

he hecho algo que ha satisfecho a la gente a la que<br />

estoy sirviendo y, claro, con las cosas buenas de<br />

la vida.”<br />

¿Qué le hace vibrar? “¡Todo me hace vibrar<br />

a mi! Puede ser la cosa muy pequeña. Soy<br />

una persona que me levanto por la mañana<br />

con mucha vibra, si no, ¿cómo podría yo<br />

motivar a los oyentes a vivir con ese espíritu<br />

alegre y con esas ganas de seguir<br />

prosperando y viviendo en el ambiente<br />

en el que viven?”<br />

¿Qué le quita el sueño? “Trato de<br />

que nada ni nadie me quite el sueño,<br />

sobre todo porque entonces no podría<br />

funcionar. Yo intento tratar de resolver<br />

el mismo día cualquier cosa, y si no,<br />

intento buscar la forma si es que<br />

hay una solución. Si hay una<br />

solución se arregla. Donde hay<br />

un problema hay una solución.”<br />

Ah, otra cosa… “Me da<br />

mucho gusto es que tengamos otros<br />

medios de comunicación como por<br />

ejemplo el Tiempo Hispano que me está<br />

entrevistando. Su editor, el Sr. Gabriel<br />

Pilonieta se ha interesado por mantener<br />

informada a la comunidad con este semanario<br />

bilingüe que no es sólo comercial sino<br />

informativo y educativo. Ojala que los otros<br />

medios, tanto radio, como televisión, como prensa<br />

escrita hicieran lo mismo por intentar servir a la<br />

comunidad.<br />

The first ever Medalla Cortez Award - which recognizes excellence in Hispanic radio<br />

broadcasting – was presented to our Rafael Orlando at the inaugural Radio Ink<br />

Hispanic Radio Conference.<br />

Rafael Orlando Dosman, Program Director and morning show host of <strong>930</strong>am <strong>La</strong> <strong>Exitosa</strong> (WYUS) was<br />

selected as personality of the year for U.S. radio stations in markets 11 +. Rafael was awarded the honor<br />

among hundreds of entries from across the country in the hottest new format – Hispanic Radio.<br />

It has already been twelve years since the radio waves of Southern <strong>Delaware</strong> are heard in Spanish<br />

through the voice of Rafael Orlando. This man with a huge mustache and great charisma, began broadcasting<br />

in Spanish two hours on Saturdays. As the Hispanic community of the area grew, so did the Spanish<br />

broadcasting hours at this station which at present broadcasts twenty-four/seven.<br />

Rafael Orlando began his broadcasting career in back in his native Panama in 1974 and came to live<br />

in <strong>Delaware</strong> in 1995 where he has worked ever since, with much success at <strong>La</strong> <strong>Exitosa</strong> (WYUS) for the<br />

past 12 years.<br />

On the award received Rafael Orlando says “it represents the effort, not only speaking<br />

about myself, but also about all the different people that have made it come true. In a state<br />

as small as <strong>Delaware</strong> it is important to see that there are people that are trying for radio<br />

and press to carry that cultural and entertainment message to their listeners and<br />

readers. I hope in the future there will be more Hispanics who are recognized for their<br />

broadcasting work.”<br />

“To me radio is extremely important communication tool, especially in this area<br />

especially because without the radio Hispanics do not have any way of being informed<br />

of what is going on locally or internationally. We inform them of the inclement weather<br />

delays, we bring them the local information that regarding public health offices. Radio<br />

is the most effective way.”<br />

What makes this radio man hurt? “What bothers me the most is how sometimes they<br />

treat Hispanic people in certain places. Not only the undocumented; it is as if they are<br />

all from the same place, of lower quality than any anglo person. They are not<br />

treated with the same respect.”<br />

What makes him smile? “I smile when I see I have<br />

done something that has satisfied the people I serve<br />

and, of course, the good things in life.”<br />

What makes him vibrate? “Everything makes me<br />

vibrate! It can be a very small thing. I am the type of<br />

person that gets up in the morning with much<br />

vibration, otherwise, how would I be able to<br />

motivate the listeners to live with that lively spirit<br />

and that desire to keep going and living in the<br />

atmosphere they live in?<br />

What keeps him awake at night? “I try<br />

for nothing or no one to take my sleep<br />

away, especially because otherwise I<br />

would not be able to function. I try to<br />

solve anything the same day, and if<br />

not, I try to find the way if there is a<br />

solution. If there is a solution, it can<br />

be fixed. Where there is a problem<br />

there is a solution.”<br />

Oh, and another thing… “It<br />

makes me very happy that there<br />

is other media, as for example El<br />

Tiempo Hispano which I am being<br />

interviewed by. Its editor, Mr.<br />

Gabriel Pilonieta has made it a point<br />

to keep the community informed with<br />

this bilingual weekly which is not only<br />

commercial but informative and<br />

educational. Hopefully there will be<br />

other media, radio, television, and<br />

written press which will do the same to<br />

try to serve the community.<br />

And that is Rafael Orlando for you.<br />

Ahora que se ha posado el polvo de la muy anticipada llegada del “IPhone,” de la película “The<br />

Transformers,” y de “Live Earth,” sólo por mencionar unos pocos, ya podemos todos redirigir nuestra<br />

atención hacia nuestras vidas en general…Este…¿Qué tal el tiempo? Se siente, pero tras darle<br />

muchas vueltas, este tema no se puede ignorar, ya que de un modo u otro, nos afecta a todos. Piense<br />

en las inundaciones que están ocurriendo en nuestro país y en Europa y los terribles incendios que<br />

están azotando a la costa oeste debido a las olas de sequía; ¿cómo ignorar todo eso? Yo fui una de<br />

los dos billones de personas que se estima vieron la maratón de 24 horas “Live Earth” (tierra<br />

viva) durante el que se considera el día más afortunado del año ó, si no es de los que cree<br />

en el azar, otros estarían de acuerdo en que el sábado 07/07/07 fue un día esotérica<br />

y numéricamente místico. El evento no se organizó para recaudar fondos, sino como<br />

una herramienta de concienciación global sobre los drásticos cambios climáticos de<br />

la tierra y de los patrones del tiempo debido al calentamiento global. También fue<br />

un llamamiento a que todos participemos llevando a cabo cambios positivos<br />

para ayudar al medio ambiente haciendo y dando pasos sencillos como son el<br />

reciclaje, usando productos de bajo consumo de energía, plantando árboles,<br />

etc. Live Earth fue televisado desde y para los siete continentes, con un<br />

desfile de intérpretes espectacular, desde dos grupos re-unidos como<br />

“Genesis” y “The Police,” hasta Duran-Duran, Madonna, Fergie, Jon Bon<br />

Jovi, y muchos más. También se dieron cita activistas ‘verdes’ como Leonardo<br />

DiCaprio, Cameron Díaz y, por supuesto el Cruzado por antonomasia, el Sr.Al<br />

Gore. Este fue un esfuerzo muy bien intencionado de promover la acción<br />

deliberada desde un punto de vista global por salvar a nuestro planeta y ayudar<br />

a nuestro medio ambiente; sin embargo muchos arg irán lo contrario justificando este<br />

concierto maratón de 24 horas como otro evento más del estilo de Live Aid y Live 8.<br />

Está claro que el mensaje y la misión de Live Earth son diferentes y únicos en comparación<br />

a los anteriores eventos de tal magnitud. También debemos reconocer el éxito que está en boca<br />

de todos, o sea, la banda de cinco miembros compuesta por cinco investigadores científicos de la<br />

Estación de Investigaciones de Rothera enAntárctica llamada “Nunatak,” que en groenlandés significa<br />

“cumbre.” Esta banda jamás había actuado antes para un público de más de 17 personas, que es el<br />

número total de miembros de la comunidad entera de colegas de la estación de investigaciones de<br />

Rothera. En principio, la idea de Gore había sido llevar por avión a una banda para actuar en<br />

Antárctica, pero esta idea fue abandonada rápidamente debido a que julio es temporada de pleno<br />

invierno y no pueden aterrizar ni amerizar ni aviones ni barcos debido a las condiciones del tiempo.<br />

Llámenlo suerte, o quizá fueron esos números especiales 07/07/07 de ese día del año en el que Al<br />

Gore decidío convertir su visón en realidad y en la cual su mensaje fue escuchado en todo el globo.<br />

Hoy, al oír la canción de Madonna, Oye Tu (Hey You),” recuerde que esto es un llamamiento a la<br />

acción al abrir nuestros corazones y mentes en un intento por hacer de nuestro planeta un hogar en<br />

el que podamos todos disfrutar viviendo durante muchos cientos de miles de años por venir.<br />

«Hey You»<br />

Now that the dust has settled from the much anticipated arrival of the “IPhone,” the movie “The<br />

Transformers,” and “Live Earth,” just to mention a few, we can all re-direct our attention to our lives in<br />

general…Hmm? How about the weather? Sorry, but after much thought, this topic can’t be ignored<br />

because one way or another, we are all affected by it. Think about the floods that are taking place in<br />

our country and in Europe and the terrible fires in the west coast due to droughts; how can we ignore<br />

that? I was one of the estimated two billion people who watched the 24-hour marathon of “Live<br />

Earth” in what was believed to be the luckiest day of the year or, if you do not<br />

believe in chances, others would agree that Saturday 07/07/07 was an<br />

esoterically and numerically mystical day. The event was organized,<br />

not as a fundraiser, but as a tool to raise global awareness on the<br />

Earth’s drastic climate changes and weather patterns due to<br />

global warming. It was also a cry for all of us to take part in<br />

making positive changes to help the environment by doing<br />

and taking simple steps like recycling, using energy efficient<br />

products, plant trees, etc. Live Earth was televised from and<br />

to all seven continents and the line-up of performers was<br />

spectacular, from two reunited groups such as “Genesis”<br />

and “ The Police,” to Duran-Duran, Madonna, Fergie, Jon<br />

Bon Jovi, and many more. There were also some Green-<br />

Conscious activists like Leonardo DiCaprio, Cameron Diaz<br />

and of course the crusader himself Mr. Al Gore. This was a<br />

very well intended effort to promote conscious action from a<br />

global standpoint to save our planet and help our environment; but<br />

many will argue the opposite and justify this 24-hour marathon concert<br />

as just another event in line with summer concerts such as LiveAid and<br />

Live 8. It is clear that the message and mission of Live Earth are different and<br />

unique compared to previous events of such magnitude. We should also recognize<br />

the hit that has people talking, that is, the five-member band made of scientific researchers from the<br />

Rothera Research Station inAntarctica called “Nunatak,” which in Greenlandic means “summit.” This<br />

band had never performed for an audience of more than 17 people, which is the total number of<br />

members from the entire community of colleagues from the Rothera research station. Originally, Gore’s<br />

idea was to fly in a band in order to perform inAntarctica, but this idea was quickly abandoned since<br />

July is mid-winter season and no planes or boats can land or take off due to the weather conditions.<br />

Call it luck, or maybe it was those special 07/07/07 numbers on that day of the year on whichAl Gore<br />

decided to have his vision become a reality and on which his message was heard all over the globe.<br />

Today, when you hear Madonna’s song “Hey You,” remember this is a call for action in opening our<br />

hearts and minds in an attempt to make our planet a home we can all enjoy living in for many hundreds<br />

of thousands of years to come.

§ 8-201. ESTABLECIMIENTO DE LA RELACIÓN MADRE-MENOR Y<br />

(a) <strong>La</strong> relación madre-menor se establece entre una<br />

mujer y un menor por:<br />

(1) Haber dado a luz la mujer al menor;<br />

(2) Adjudicarse la maternidad de la mujer; o<br />

(b) <strong>La</strong> relación padre-menor se establece entre un<br />

(4) Adopción del menor por parte del hombre; o<br />

(5) Consentimiento del hombre a la reproducción<br />

asistida por parte de una mujer bajo el sub-capítulo<br />

VII de este capítulo y que haya resultado en el<br />

§ 8-202. LA NO DISCRIMINACIÓN EN BASE AL ESTADO CIVIL.<br />

Ahí fuera hay al meno un par de<br />

millones de adolescentes que este<br />

verano comenzarán sus primeros<br />

trabajos en serio. Si conoce a uno de<br />

esos adolescentes, una pregunta que<br />

podrían hacerle sería “¿en qué<br />

consisten mis impuestos de la<br />

Seguridad Social?” Alguno incluso<br />

podría preguntar, “¿qué es FICA?”<br />

Aquí va una guía rápida sobre lo que<br />

cualquier Nuevo empleado debe<br />

saber sobre la Seguridad Social.<br />

En primer lugar, por ley, el patrón<br />

debe retener impuestos en concepto<br />

de Seguridad Social de la nómina del<br />

trabajador a razón de un 6.2 por ciento<br />

de la paga bruta. (Además deberá retenerse un impuesto por Medicare<br />

de la nómina a razón de un 1.45 por ciento.) Aunque normalmente en<br />

la nómina de un empleado aparece como “Social Security Taxes”<br />

Impuestos de la Seguridad Social,” a veces la deducción se llama<br />

“FICA taxes” (Impuestos FICA), que significa Federal Insurance<br />

Contributions Act (Acta de Contribución de Seguro Federal), en<br />

referencia al Acta de la Seguridad Social original. Es interesante<br />

resaltar que, para muchos jóvenes trabajadores, los impuestos de la<br />

Seguridad Social que se les retienen pueden incluso ser más altos<br />

que lo que se paga en impuesto sobre los ingresos estatales o<br />

federales. Por tanto será conveniente comprender cómo se utiliza ese<br />

dinero. Al pagar impuestos de la Seguridad Social hoy, están<br />

asegurándose su futuro económico.<br />

Los impuestos que paguen ahora se traducen en una vida entera<br />

de protección, tanto si se jubilan como si quedaran incapacitados. En<br />

caso de fallecimiento, sus familias (o futuras familias) podrán ser<br />

receptores de los beneficios como sobrevivientes también basado en<br />

su trabajo. Y de seguro que en la actualidad cuentan con familiares –<br />

por ejemplo abuelos – que ya disfrutan de beneficios de la Seguridad<br />

Social a los que contribuyen sus impuestos de la Seguridad Social.<br />

Es posible que, debido a que se encuentran muy lejos de la<br />

jubilación, les cueste entender la conveniencia de hacer pagos por<br />

beneficios que puede que estén a 50 años vistas. Pero también<br />

deben saber que los impuestos de la Seguridad Social que están<br />

pagando pueden proporcionar valiosos beneficios en caso de<br />

incapacitación. Los estudios realizados demuestran que una persona<br />

de 20 años tiene una probabilidad de 3 entre 10 de quedar minusválido<br />

en algún momento antes de alcanzar la edad de jubilación.<br />

Por último, si tiene la oportunidad de hablar con algún trabajador<br />

nuevo sobre su puesto y sobre la Seguridad Social, recuérdele que<br />

si algún patrón en algún momento le llega a ofrecer el hacer la vista<br />

gorda a las reglas, y pagarles en “dinero negro”, que deben<br />

rechazarlo. Aunque es posible que el empleado vea unos pocos<br />

dólares más, en su paga, por otro lado, con este arreglo no acumularía<br />

créditos para la Seguridad Social.<br />

También recuérdeles a los nuevos empleados que es mejor que<br />

no lleven encima su tarjeta de la Seguridad Social. Es un documento<br />

que deben guardar y proteger. Y si hacen más preguntas de las que<br />

se siente capaz de responder, solo dígales que la próxima vez que<br />

estén usando el Internet que se paren por nuestra página Web<br />

out there who will be<br />

starting their first real jobs<br />

this summer. If you know<br />

one of these teenagers, a<br />

question that you may be<br />

asked is “what are my<br />

Social Security taxes all<br />

about?” Some may even<br />

ask “what is FICA?” Here<br />

is a quick primer on what<br />

any new worker needs to<br />

know about Social Security.<br />

First, by law,<br />

employers must withhold from a worker’s paycheck Social Security<br />

taxes at the rate of 6.2 percent of gross pay. (In addition, a Medicare<br />

payroll tax of 1.45 percent of pay must also be withheld.) While<br />

usually referred to on an employee’s payroll statement as “Social<br />

Security taxes,” sometimes the deduction is labeled as “FICA taxes”,<br />

which stands for Federal Insurance ContributionsAct, a reference to<br />

the original Social Security Act. Interestingly, for many younger<br />

workers, the Social Security taxes withheld may actually be more than<br />

is being paid in state or federal income tax. It is therefore important to<br />

understand how that money is used. By paying Social Security taxes<br />

now, they are providing for their financial future.<br />

The taxes they pay now translate to a lifetime of protection, whether<br />

they retire or become disabled. And in the event that they die, their<br />

family (or future family) may be able to receive survivors benefits<br />

based on their work as well. And today they probably have family<br />

members — grandparents, for example — who already are enjoying<br />

Social Security benefits which their Social Security taxes help provide.<br />

Because they are a long way from retirement, they may have a<br />

tough time appreciating the value of benefit payments that could be<br />

some 50 years distant. But they should also know that the Social<br />

Security taxes they are paying can provide valuable disability benefits.<br />

Studies do show that a 20-year-old has about a three in 10 chance of<br />

becoming disabled sometime before reaching retirement age.<br />

Finally, if you have the opportunity to talk to any new workers<br />

about their job and Social Security, remind them that if an employer<br />

offers to bend the rules and pay them “under the table,” they should<br />

refuse. While the employee may see a few more dollars in his or her<br />

pay, the employee would not earn Social Security credits under this<br />

illegal arrangement.<br />

Also remind new workers that they probably shouldn’t be carrying<br />

their Social Security card around with them. It’s a document that<br />

needs to be safeguarded and protected. And if they ask more questions<br />

than you can to answer, just tell them that the next time they are surfing<br />

<strong>La</strong> cuenta regresiva encontró en una casa de <strong>La</strong>urel, DE, a miles de kilómetros del Perú, a unos<br />

entusiastas compatriotas que fueron llegando todos con mucha ilusión y con el único propósito de no<br />

perderse aquel instante de gloria. Música, comida y baile fueron alargando el momento decisivo, ese que<br />

estábamos anhelando vivir, ser testigos de uno de los momentos más importantes en la historia del país:<br />

¡Ay! Si el Machu Picchu, la ciudadela inca tantas veces visitada, se convirtiera en una de las Siete<br />

de Julio del 2007 (07/07/07).<br />

Minutos inacabables comenzaron a transcurrir desde que apareció en la pantalla gigante Neil Armstrong,<br />

el primer hombre que pisó la luna, y comunicó al mundo cual había sido elegida la primera maravilla<br />

moderna: la Gran Muralla China. Ingrid se maltrataba los dedos de angustia, mientras que a su costado,<br />

aquí, una servidora, buscaba una respuesta en la voz del presentador. No fue hasta casi diez minutos<br />

después de que comenzara la ceremonia que al fin sucedió lo que estábamos esperando; si señores, el<br />

Macchu Picchu, nuestro Macchu Picchu había sido declarado una de las Nuevas siete Maravillas del<br />

Mundo, y en ese momento la casa estalló de alegría mientras nos abrazábamos los unos a los otros de<br />

alivio y de emoción, al tiempo que entre codos y brazos entrelazados aparecía en el televisor el orgulloso<br />

alcalde de Macchu Picchu ataviado con su típica vestimenta Inca, recibiendo el galardón. El gringo del<br />

grupo, que “no hablar Espaniol” y que no podía más con su cuerpo de tanto alboroto, y que tampoco<br />

entendía nada de todos modos, igual acompañaba a los demás regalando sonrisas. Y así son las<br />

celebraciones de éxito, cuando el éxito parece tocarte de tan cerca aunque esté tan lejos. Y así es la<br />

pasión que despierta ‘la ciudadela’ en aquellos que mantienen un romance con ella, y así seguirá por el<br />

resto de los días, ya que este reconocimiento universal coloca a la Ciudadela del Machu Picchu en el<br />

peldaño que se merece, en ese que los peruanos y algún que otro visitante que ha tenido el privilegio de<br />

asistir a su maravilla en toda su magnitud, siempre lo hemos colocado. Ahora, por fin, el mundo no puede<br />

por más que rendirse ante su imponente estructura.<br />

Gracias a cien millones de votos llegados de alrededor del mundo, el Machu Picchu fue elegido por<br />

mayoría popular. Los peruanos somos menos de 29 millones, y menos todavía los que contamos con<br />

acceso a Internet, con seguridad menos de la mitad, lo cual quiere decir que no nos hemos elegido<br />

nosotros mismos, sino que el reconocimiento viene del resto del mundo. Se ha premiado la belleza de la<br />

ciudad, su historia, su arquitectura, además de la pregunta obligada que se hace cualquiera que lo visita,<br />

o sea, los ‘¡¿cómo rayos hicieron los incas para...?!’.<br />

Fue el norteamericano Hiram Bingham quien dio a conocer esta maravilla de la historia al mundo<br />

entero cuando llegó al Machu Picchu en 1911. Hoy, gracias al apoyo de muchos, toma un merecido lugar<br />

de preferencia tanto en el espacio como en el tiempo, tanto en la geografía como en la historia. Y para<br />

The final countdown found some enthusiastic fellow compatriots in a home in <strong>La</strong>urel, DE, thousands<br />

of miles from Peru, who had been arriving with much excitement and with the only purpose of not<br />

missing that instant of glory. Music, food and dance kept stretching the decisive moment, the one we<br />

were all yearning to experience, witnessing one of the most important moments in the history of the<br />

country: Oh! If Machu Picchu, the Inca citadel so often visited, were to become one of the Seven<br />

Wonders of the Modern World. That moment began when the clock struck 5 p.m. on July 7 of 2007<br />

(07/07/07).<br />

Endless minutes went by from the moment Neil Armstrong, the first man to lay foot on the moon,<br />

came on the giant screen and communicated to the world which had been chosen the first modern<br />

marvel of the world: The Great Wall of China. Ingrid mistreated her fingers with worry while at her<br />

side, yours truly, sought an answer in the voice of the host. It was not until 10 minutes after the<br />

ceremony had begun that what we were hoping for happened: Yes, ladies and gentlemen, Machu<br />

Picchu, our Machu Picchu, had been named one of the Seven New Wonders of the World. At that<br />

moment, that house exploded with joy while we embraced one another with relief and excitement,<br />

watching at the same time, between entwined elbows and arms as the proud mayor of Machu Picchu<br />

appeared on the screen dressed in typical Inca gear, receiving the award. The gringo of the group<br />

who, “no hablar Espaniol” and who was beside himself with so much agitation and did not understand<br />

anything anyway, still partook with the others by giving away his smiles. That is what celebrations of<br />

success are about, when success seems to touch you so closely even when it is so far away. That<br />

is the kind of passion ‘the citadel’ ignites in those who have a romance with it. That is the way it will<br />

continue to be for ever now that this universal recognition places the Machu Picchu citadel on the<br />

rung it deserves, the one on which Peruvians and other visitors that have had the privilege of being<br />

in the presence of all its splendor, have always placed it on. Now, finally, the World cannot but<br />

surrender before this great structure.<br />

Thanks to the millions of votes arrived from around the world, Machu Picchu was voted by<br />

popular majority. We Peruvians are less than 29 million, and there are even less of us with Internet<br />

access, with all certainty, less than half of us. This means that we have not chosen ourselves, but<br />

rather, the recognition has come from the rest of the world. What was considered was the beauty of<br />

the city, its history, its architecture and also the mandatory question that all visitors ask themselves, in<br />

other words, ‘how on earth were these Incas able to...?!’.<br />

It was a North American, Hiram Bingham, who let the entire World know about this wonder of<br />

history when he arrived in Machu Picchu in 1911. Today, thanks to the support of many it holds a<br />

deserved place of honor both in space and time, both geographically and historically. Finally, as we<br />

say in Spanish, ¡SI SE PUDO! (it was possible).

Ya no seguirán avanzando las manecillas del reloj para las víctimas de abuso<br />

sexual infantil ya que este pasado martes en Dover la Gobernadora aprobó la ley<br />

“Acta de la Víctima Infantil,” que elimina la ley de prescripciones de dos años que<br />

pesa sobre los casos de enjuiciamiento en los casos de abuso sexual infantil.<br />

<strong>La</strong> propuesta de ley también se refiere al tema de las víctimas para las cuales la ley de prescripciones<br />

ya ha vencido, proporcionando una ventana de oportunidad de dos años durante la cual poder denunciar<br />

a sus abusadores. Por otro lado, la propuesta de la cámara 242, afín a esta legislación y que busca<br />

ampliar elActa de la Víctima Infantil eliminando la inmunidad soberana del estado en lo que se refiere a los<br />

casos de abuso sexual infantil, está pendiente de lo que ocurra en el Senado.<br />

<strong>La</strong> propuesta del Senado número 29, legislación que enmienda el Título 10 del Código de <strong>Delaware</strong><br />

mediante la eliminación de la ley de prescripciones en los casos de enjuiciamiento referentes a abuso<br />

sexual infantil. <strong>La</strong> propuesta, respaldada por la Senadora Karen Peterson, el Senador David McBride, la<br />

Representante Deborah Hudson y por el Representante Greg <strong>La</strong>velle, también proporciona una ventana<br />

de oportunidad de dos años durante la cual las víctimas podrán presentar una acción civil para casos que<br />

antes eran excluidos por la ley vigente.<br />

“Desde que pasamos la Ley de Megan en 1998, hemos estado trabajando para afinar y fortalecer las<br />

leyes de <strong>Delaware</strong> relativas a los agresores sexuales,” dijo la Gobernadora Ruth Ann Minner. “Los<br />

depredadores sexuales que victimizan a los niños están viendo que en <strong>Delaware</strong> no se tolerarán sus<br />

horrendos crímenes contra los niños de nuestro estado.Aplaudo los esfuerzos de Ia Senadora Peterson<br />

y de todos sus proponentes por colocarse al frente de la aprobación de esta porción de la legislación tan<br />

sumamente importante.”<br />

Esta legislación altera la ley de prescripciones que hasta estos momentos era de dos años de modo<br />

que de ahora en adelante, ya no existirá una ley de prescripciones en las causas de acción basadas en<br />

el abuso sexual de un menor. Además, la SB 29 proporciona a las víctimas de abuso sexual infantil que<br />

no contaban con la posibilidad de presentar una denuncia contra su agresor debido a la fecha de<br />

caducidad de la ley de prescripciones, a que puedan presentarla frente a la Corte Suprema durante un<br />

periodo de dos años.<br />

“Tanto la Representante Deborah Hudson como yo nos sentimos orgullosas de haber jugado un<br />

papel en la aprobación de esta ley que representa un hito,” dijo la Senadora Karen Peterson, autora y<br />

principal promotora de esta ley. “Como resultado de esta aprobación, ahora los niños de <strong>Delaware</strong> están<br />

más seguros, las víctimas de abuso sexual infantil por fin pueden recibir justicia, y los acosadores sexuales<br />

de menores se darán cuenta de que <strong>Delaware</strong> ya no es un refugio seguro en el que ampararse de la ley.”<br />

<strong>Delaware</strong> law is right<br />

behind sexual<br />

predators<br />

The clock will no longer be ticking for the victims of child sexual abuse. This past<br />

Tuesday in Dover, Gov. Minner signed into law the “Child Victims’ Act,” which<br />

eliminates the two-year statute of limitations on civil suits relating to child sexual<br />

abuse cases.<br />

The bill also deals with the issue of victims for whom the statute of limitations has already tolled,<br />

providing a two-year window of opportunity for them to sue their abusers. A related piece of legislation,<br />

House Bill 242, which seeks to expand the Child Victim’sAct by waiving the state’s sovereign immunity in<br />

relation to child sexual abuse cases, is pending action in the Senate.<br />

Senate Bill 29, is legislation that amends Title 10 of the <strong>Delaware</strong> Code by removing the statute of<br />

limitations for civil suits relating to child sexual abuse. The bill, sponsored by Senator Karen Peterson,<br />

Senator David McBride, Representative Deborah Hudson, and Representative Greg <strong>La</strong>velle, also provides<br />

a two-year window in which victims can bring a civil action in cases previously barred by the current<br />

statute.<br />

“Ever since we passed Megan’s <strong>La</strong>w in 1998, we’ve been working to refine and strengthen <strong>Delaware</strong>’s<br />

laws relating to sex offenders,” said Governor RuthAnn Minner. “Sexual predators that victimize children<br />

are learning that <strong>Delaware</strong> is not going to tolerate their horrendous crimes against the children of our state.<br />

I applaud the efforts of Senator Peterson and all of the co-sponsors for taking the lead on passing this vitally<br />

important legislation.”<br />

This legislation changes the statute of limitations, which is currently two years, so that going forward<br />

there will no longer be a statute of limitations for a cause of action based upon the sexual abuse of a minor.<br />

Additionally, SB 29 provides that victims of child sexual abuse, who are barred from filing a lawsuit against<br />

their abuser due to the expiration of a statute of limitation, can file a claim in Superior Court for a period of<br />

two years.<br />

“Rep. Deborah Hudson and I are proud to have played a role in getting this landmark legislation<br />

passed,” said Senator Karen Peterson, the bill’s author and primary sponsor. “As a result of its passage,<br />

<strong>Delaware</strong>’s children are safer, child sexual abuse victims can finally get justice, and those who molest<br />

children will find that they no longer have a safe haven in <strong>Delaware</strong>.”<br />

en Brooklyn, Nueva York. Es hija de Idania Francisca de<br />

Nicaragua y de Roque Agosto Bautista de República<br />

nacimiento de Jesús Bautista. Un año más tarde, ella y su familia se mudaron<br />

a <strong>Delaware</strong> donde Ivania asistió a una academia de modelos hasta los seis<br />

años. Durante ese tiempo quedó en primer lugar en un concurso de modelos<br />

de su escuela. A los siete años fue a la Escuela de San Pablo (Saint Paul’s<br />

School) hasta que se graduó del octavo curso. En esta escuela participó en<br />

deportes como el baloncesto y danza. Ivania siempre ha sido una estudiante<br />

de matrícula de honor con calificaciones sobresalientes. Se graduó el 3 de<br />

junio del 2005 como la primera de su clase y también fue aceptada como<br />

miembro de la Sociedad Honorífica Juvenil Nacional. En estos momentos<br />

Ivania asiste a la escuela secundaria Saint Elizabeth continuando con su<br />

buena trayectoria. Sigue siendo una estudiante destacada académicamente y<br />

está tomando clases avanzadas. Hasta el momento, en la secundaria ha<br />

disfrutado practicando deportes como animación (cheerleading) y atletismo, y<br />

danza. Es una muchacha bien equilibrada a la que le gusta ayudar en lo que<br />

puede. Le encantan los animales y a menudo hace voluntariado en los<br />

refugios para animales locales. <strong>La</strong> mayor parte de su tiempo lo pasa en casa<br />

cuidando de sus dos perros y de vez en cuando de algún que otro cachorrito.<br />

Su esperanza y sus sueños de futuro no han cambiado nunca desde que era<br />

pequeña. Tiene pensado ir a la Universidad de <strong>Delaware</strong> para estudiar medicina<br />

y luego seguir a una facultad de medicina para convertirse en cardiocirujano.<br />

Ivania del Carmen Bautista was born July 13, 1991 in Brooklyn, NY. She is the<br />

daughter of Idania Francisca who is from Nicaragua and Roque Agosto Bautista<br />

from the Dominican Republic. Ivania started school when she was two and a half<br />

years old; she was always a very bright girl<br />

On June 17, 1993, Ivania became an older sister when Ivan de Jesús Bautista was born.A year later,<br />

her and her family moved to <strong>Delaware</strong> where Ivania attended a modeling school until she was six. During<br />

this time she won first place in a modeling contest from her school. When she was seven years old, she<br />

attended Saint Paul’s school until she graduated in the eighth grade.At this school she was involved in sports<br />

such as basketball and dance. Ivania was always an honor student with outstanding grades. She graduated<br />

June 3, 2005 as valedictorian of her class, and was also inducted into the National Junior Honor Society.<br />

Ivania is currently attending Saint Elizabeth High School and continues on her good path. She continues<br />

being an honor student and taking advanced classes. So far, during high school she’s enjoyed sports such<br />

as cheerleading and running track as well as track. She is a well-rounded girl who loves to help in any way<br />

she can. She loves animals and often volunteers at local animal shelters. Most of her time is spent at home<br />

taking care of her two dogs and occasionally a few puppies. Her hope and dreams for her future have never<br />

changed since she was a little girl. She plans to attend the University of <strong>Delaware</strong> to study medicine and go<br />

to medical school to become a cardiac surgeon. To this day her favorite quote is «Do not wish on a star, reach<br />

for one.»<br />

Ya habíamos hablado de Norma Espino en nuestro número 11 del 13 de abril de este año (Movimiento<br />

a Kansas City) cuando junto con sus compañeras de proyecto Nataja Wells y Zinnia Dávila consiguió el<br />

primer puesto del concurso Skills USA del estado de <strong>Delaware</strong>. Esto les valió un viaje a dicha ciudad a finales<br />

de junio donde compitieron frente a 47 grupos de secundarias de otros estados, y de donde volvieron<br />

portando una flamante medalla de bronce obtenida por su trabajo sobre movimiento ergonómico.<br />

Al explicar Norma que era exigencia del proyecto el aplicar la información obtenida educando a la<br />

comunidad y a nivel industrial y empresarial, no puedo resistir la tentación y le comento que yo paso muchas<br />

horas sentada delante de mi computadora y le pregunto sobre cuáles son las medidas que debo tomar. Ella<br />

de inmediato se presta a explicarme, “la screen (pantalla) siempre tiene que estar a la distancia de su mano<br />

estirada; más lejos se fuerza la vista. Sus pies tienen que estar en un right angle (ángulo recto). Si ve sus pies<br />

cruzados, los tiene que poner derechitos, y también los puede poner en banquito por un ratito para que<br />

descansen. En sus manos tiene que tener un pad porque si no puede tener una enfermedad que se llama<br />

carpal túnel (síndrome de túnel carpiano), ….” ¡Realmente se sabe su materia!<br />

“Este premio me representó mucho porque aunque agarramos el bronce frente a 47 grupos del país no<br />

salimos en el lugar 47,” comenta esta joven luchadora que añade, “Quiero volver otra vez el año que viene,<br />

¡y voy a traer el primero!” Según explica Norma, “Este premio queda en tu record cuando vas a aplicar a<br />

un college, y esto te enseña también a hablar en público y a hacer presentaciones. Esto te motiva a seguir<br />

adelante.”<br />

A los jóvenes de su edad les dice “que no se salgan de la escuela, que no la hagan aburrida, que la<br />

hagan divertida para que agarren un better job opportunity (mejor oportunidad laboral), que dream big<br />

(sueñen a lo grande) y que su sueño se haga realidad.” Y yo a ella le digo “You go girl!!”<br />

We had already talked about Norma Espino in our edition 11 of this year’s April 13 (City Bound<br />

Movement) when she and her project peers Nataja Wells and Zinnia Dávila obtained the first place of<br />

<strong>Delaware</strong>’s Skills USA. This gave them the opportunity of a trip to Kansas City at the end of June where<br />

they competed against 47 high school groups from other states, and from where they returned carrying a<br />

new bronze medal for their project on ergonomic motion.<br />

When Norma explains how it was a requirement of the project to apply the information obtained by<br />

educating the community and at an industrial and business level, I cannot resist. I tell her that I spend many<br />

hours sitting in front of my computer and I ask her about the measures that I should take. She immediately<br />

lends herself to explain to me, “the screen always has to be at the distance of your stretched out hand;<br />

further away it strains your eyes. Your feet need to be at a right angle. If you see your feet are crossed, you<br />

need to make them nice and straight, and you can also prop them up on a little stool for a little while to rest<br />

them. For your hands you need a pad, because if not you can get a disease called carpal tunnel …” She<br />

really knows her subject!<br />

“This award meant a lot to me because, even though we got the bronze against 47 groups in the<br />

country, we did not come out in 47th place,” says this determined young woman, and she adds, “I want to<br />

go back next year, and I am going to bring back the first prize!” Norma goes on to explain, “This prize stays<br />

in your record when you apply at a college, and this also teaches you how to speak in public and how to<br />

do presentations. This motivates you to keep going.”<br />

To other high school students she says “don’t drop out of school, don’t make it boring, make it fun so you<br />

can have a better job opportunity; dream big, and make your dream come true.” And I say to her “You go<br />

Buñuelos de Plátanos<br />

y Frijoles Negros<br />

Ingredientes<br />

2 1/2 libras de plátanos maduros<br />

1 lata de frijoles negros (16 onzas)<br />

2 cucharadas de aceite vegetal<br />

1/3 taza de cebolla picadita<br />

1 diente de ajo machacado<br />

1/3 taza de harina<br />

1/4 cucharita de sal<br />

2 1/2 tazas de aceite vegetal<br />

Hace 8 Buñuelos<br />

Preparación<br />

Cortar los extremos de los plátanos, y cortar cada plátano en 4 piezas.<br />

Colocar piezas sin pelar en una caldera con agua suficiente para<br />

cubrirlas. Poner en fuego alto hasta hervir, y después reducir fuego<br />

inmediatamente para hervir a fuego lento por 25 minutos hasta que<br />

suavicen. Escurrir y enfriar. Mientras tanto, suavemente aplastar frijoles<br />

con tenedor. En un sartén, calentar las 2 cucharadas de aceite y añadir<br />

cebollas y ajo; sofreír en fuego medio por 1 minuto.Añadir frijoles. Freír<br />

por aproximadamente3a4minutos mientras moviendo, hasta que la<br />

mezcla se engrose y se aleje de los lados de el sartén. Remover la piel<br />

de los plátanos y colocarlos en un tazón. Hacer puré de los plátanos.<br />

Añadir harina y sal. Tomar aproximadamente 1/4 taza de la mezcla y,<br />

con manos mojadas para prevenir pegarse, formar bolitas y aplanar. Colocar2y21/2cucharadas de<br />

los frijoles refritos en el centro y cerrar con otra “hoja” de la mezcla de plátanos. Ligeramente arreglar<br />

los buñuelos para que sean circulares. En un sartén grande o freidor calentar 2 1/2 tazas de aceite.<br />

Cuidadosamente poner3o4buñuelos en el aceite y freír por1ó2minutos, hasta que estén marrón<br />

dorado. Escurrir en servilletas y servir caliente.<br />

Plantain and<br />

Black Bean Fritters<br />

Ingredients<br />

2 1/2 lb. ripe plantains (yellow with dark spots)<br />

1 can black beans (16 ounces), well drained<br />

2 tbsp. vegetable oil<br />

1/3 cup finely chopped onion<br />

1 clove garlic, minced<br />

1/3 cup flour<br />

1/4 tsp. salt<br />

2 1/2 cups vegetable oil<br />

Makes 8 fritters<br />

Preparation<br />

Cut ends off plantains, and cut each plantain into 4 pieces. Into large stockpot,<br />

place unpeeled pieces and add enough water to cover generously. Set over<br />

high heat and bring to a boil. Once at boil, immediately reduce heat to lowmedium<br />

and simmer, semi covered, 20 to 25 minutes, until pieces are forktender.<br />

Drain well and cool. In meantime, gently mash beans with hand<br />

masher or back of fork until partially mashed. In skillet, heat 2 tbsp. oil and<br />

add onion and garlic; sauté over medium heat 1 minute.Add semi-mashed<br />

beans. Fry approximately 3 to 4 minutes while stirring, until mixture has<br />

thickened and pulls away from sides of skillet. Remove skin from plantains<br />

and place them in large bowl. Mash plantains until well broken up and fluffy.<br />

Stir in flour and salt. Take approximately 1/4 cup of mixture and, with hands<br />

slightly wet to prevent sticking, flatten and shape into 3-inch round patties. Press one patty against your<br />

palm to make slight depression and place 2 to 2 1/2 tbsp. bean filling onto its center. Top with another<br />

patty and pinch edges all around to seal filling. Lightly pat and shape filled patties into oval mounds. In<br />

large skillet or fryer over medium-high heat, heat 2 1/2 cups oil. Carefully place 3 or 4 filled patties in hot<br />

oil, and fry 1 to 2 minutes on each side, until golden brown. Drain onto paper towels and serve hot.<br />

Contra el Cáncer<br />

María Matos habla de su batalla contra el cáncer de seno y<br />

anima a las latinas a que ‘no tengan miedo a saberlo. Tengan<br />

miedo a no saberlo.»<br />

María Matos conoce de primera mano lo importe que es la detección precoz del cáncer de<br />

seno. Una mamografía le salvó la vida.<br />

Matos, de 56 años, lleva sometiéndose a mamografías desde que cumplió los 40. <strong>La</strong> prueba<br />

siempre le mostraba que no había nada, pero en Octubre del 2005 las «manchas sospechosas»<br />

que aparecieron en la mamografía resultaron ser cáncer de seno. El cáncer fue detectado tan<br />

precozmente que Matos ni siquiera había tenido tiempo de sentir el bulto.<br />

«Cuando recibí una llamada de mi medico tenía conmigo al obispo católico,» dice Matos,<br />

directora ejecutiva del Centro Comunitario <strong>La</strong>tinoamericano (LACC). «Fue el primero al que se<br />

lo conté y rezó conmigo.» Matos se ha sometido a dos cirugías para eliminar el cáncer. <strong>La</strong>s<br />

pruebas mostraron que su cáncer era agresivo por lo que también se sometió a quimioterapia y<br />

radiaciones que a su vez le provocaron la caída del cabello. Matos se encontró luchando no sólo<br />

contra su cáncer sino contra su compañía de seguros que se negaba a pagarle la prueba que<br />

ayudaría a decidir el mejor curso de acción para su tratamiento.<br />

«Someterme a la quimio y a las radiaciones fue devastador, luchar contra la compañía de<br />

seguros, luchar contra la enfermedad, ir a una fiesta,» dice Matos. «pero no dejé de vivir. No<br />

consiguió derrotarme; yo conseguí derrotarlo a él.»<br />

Matos atribuye su éxito a sus amigos, a sus familiares y a Dios. Hubo iglesias de todo el<br />

mundo celebrando círculos de oración por ella. «A muchas de esas personas muy trabajadoras<br />

puede resultarles difícil pedir ayuda,» dice, «pero el cáncer puede resultar doloroso y<br />

emocionalmente agotador y a veces sólo necesitas una mano amiga. Está bien que le sujeten la<br />

mano a uno.»<br />

Hoy Matos recibe terapia hormonal para ayudarla a evitar que se le reproduzca el cáncer.<br />

Goza de excelente salud y quiere animar a otros con el ejemplo, especialmente a las latinas con<br />

las que se encuentra en el LACC y que temen al cáncer.<br />

«El cáncer de seno es curable, si te cuidas, si tomas medidas preventivas,» dice Matos. «No<br />

deben tener miedo a la mamografía porque no quieran saberlo. Si lo averiguan a tiempo pueden<br />

vivir 10, 20 ó 30 años más. No tengan miedo a saberlo. Tengan miedo a no saberlo.»<br />

ofrecerán mamografías gratuitas a las 11:30 de la mañana el martes 17 de Julio en el Westside<br />

Health Center de 1802 West 4th Street, Wilmington. <strong>La</strong>s mujeres deben traer consigo una receta<br />

médica o prueba de seguro médico. <strong>La</strong>s que no tengan seguro médico pueden solicitar una<br />

mamografía a través del programa «Screening for Life» del Departamento de Salud y Servicios<br />

Humanos de <strong>Delaware</strong> (<strong>Delaware</strong> Department of Health and Human Services). Para concertar<br />

Maria Matos discusses her battle with breast cancer and encourages<br />

<strong>La</strong>tinas «not to be afraid of knowing. Be afraid of not knowing.»<br />

Maria Matos knows firsthand the importance of detecting breast cancer early. A mammogram saved her<br />

life.<br />

Matos, 56, has gotten a mammogram every year since turning age 40. The test always showed<br />

nothing, but in October of 2005 «suspicious spots» on her mammogram turned out to be breast cancer. The<br />

cancer was so early that Matos could not yet feel a lump.<br />

«When I got the call from my doctor, I had the Catholic bishop here,» says Matos, the executive director<br />

of the <strong>La</strong>tin American Community Center. «He was the first one I told, and he prayed with me.»<br />

Matos had two surgeries to remove the cancer. Tests showed her cancer to be aggressive, so she<br />

underwent chemotherapy and radiation, losing her hair along the way. And Matos found herself fighting not<br />

just her cancer but also her insurance company, which refused to pay for a test to help determine the best<br />

course of treatment.<br />

«It was devastating to do chemo and radiation, fight the insurance, fight the disease, go to a party,»<br />

Matos says. «But I didn’t stop living. It didn’t get the best of me; I got the best of it.»<br />

Matos credits friends, family and God. Churches around the world did prayer circles for her. «Accepting<br />

help can be difficult for many hard-working people,» she says, but «cancer can be painful and emotionally<br />

draining and you just need a hand to hold. It’s okay to hold someone’s hand.»<br />

Today, Matos takes hormonal therapy to help keep her cancer from coming back. Her health is<br />

excellent, and she wants to encourage others by example, especially the <strong>La</strong>tinas she meets at LACC who<br />

fear cancer.<br />

«Breast cancer is curable, if you take care of yourself, if you take preventive measures,» Matos says.<br />

«Don’t be scared to get a mammogram because you don’t want to know. If you know and it’s early, you<br />

can live 10, 20 or 30 more years. Don’t be afraid of knowing. Be afraid of not knowing.»<br />

Living Beyond Breast Cancer and the <strong>Delaware</strong> Breast Cancer Coalition will offer free mammograms<br />

at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, July 17, at Westside Health Center, 1802 West 4th Street, Wilmington.<br />

Women should bring a prescription or evidence of insurance. The uninsured may apply for a<br />

mammogram through the «Screening for Life» program of the <strong>Delaware</strong> Department of Health and<br />

Cultural todos los años le ofrece la oportunidad a toda la comunidad<br />

de <strong>Delaware</strong> que compartan con nosotros el Festival Hispano.<br />

Como es tiempo de compartir queremos que conozcan más de esta gran<br />

celebración con unos deliciosos, ricos y sabrosos platos típicos que nos ofrecen<br />

nuestros puestos de comida. Todos los años contamos con más de diez puestos de<br />

Hispanic Culture in Sussex County and we are all very<br />

excited for this day to come to share it with our families. This<br />

is the reason why El Centro Cultural offers our Hispanic<br />

community the opportunity to celebrate Festival Hispano<br />

every year.<br />

Because it is time to share, we would like you to learn more about this huge<br />

celebration with some of the delicious and typical foods that our food vendors<br />

will offer this year. Every year we provide more than ten food vendor tables<br />

and a variety of typical foods. Each food vendor symbolizes and represents<br />

a different country, with its origin and customs. This year we will have the<br />

opportunity to offer you typical foods from countries such as; Puerto Rico,<br />

Brazil, México, Guatemala, Peru, El Salvador and Chile.<br />

Después tomar el último viaje de regreso a casa. Yo sentí<br />

mariposas en mi estómago. Eso es un Wow!<br />

Liliana está asistiendo al Programa Bilingüe de<br />

Enriquecimiento de Verano que se ofrece en el North<br />

Georgetown Elementary School del distrito escolar Indian<br />

River este año. Su redacción en la que describe una<br />

excursión en el Ferry Cape May-Lewes ha sido escogida<br />

para su publicación en las páginas de El Tiempo Hispano.<br />

Have you ever wonder how it feels to be on a Ferry?<br />

Most of the people dream to go on one. If you want to<br />

find out go feel for your self on the Cape May Lewes<br />

Ferry. Most say they get sick but I say I love it! It can<br />

take you to New Jersey in just 2:30 imagine that. You<br />

can even take your own car and go wonder around<br />

in New Jersey. Then take the last trip back home. I felt<br />

butterflies ion my stomach. That’s a Wow!<br />

Liliana is attending the Bilingual Summer Enrichment<br />

Program offered at North Georgetown Elementary<br />

The Friends of the Woodlawn Library will host<br />

the free Summer Reading Kick-off Party<br />

Monday, June 18, 2007 from 5 to 8 pm at the<br />

Woodlawn Library at 2020 West 9th Street<br />

featuring activities for kids of all ages through<br />

At the «Get a Clue at your Library» party,<br />

y negra, aunque todo sea producto de un mismo árbol; constituye su<br />

diferencia la preparación, porque la blanca no es otra cosa que la negra<br />

El clavo de especia después de la pimienta es lo que más se usa. Se<br />

meten en una cebolla quemada para dar color y gusto al caldo: se usa de<br />

ellos en muchas salsas y guisados, y en todos los intermedios preparados<br />

con legumbres, pues su perfume es bastante agradable y de un gusto<br />

casi general; pero es necesario sacarlos antes de servir, pues su olor es<br />

lo que agrada.<br />

<strong>La</strong> nuez moscada también es parte de las especias<br />

que deben hallarse en las cocinas. Se eligen de<br />

ellas las más sanas, que se raspan en los guisados<br />

á medida que se necesita. Está bien en todas las<br />

salsas, y con particularidad a las coliflores y<br />

huevos. <strong>La</strong> flor de moscada, que no es otra cosa<br />

que su segunda corteza, se emplea pocas veces<br />

en las salsas y guisados; por lo regular se la destina<br />

á los intermedios de dulces, á los que da un gusto<br />

tan fino y agradable como lo haría la misma nuez.<br />
