THE aSIaN proMISE
Although still small, the South Korean market is
among the most promising ones in Asia. In their
quest to conquer palates, local producers enjoy the
advantages resulting from the FTA Chile executed
with this country. Concretely speaking, exports to
this destination grew twofold last year.
MErLoT proDucErS certainly have bitter recollection of
the “Sideways” film. The main character in the film spoke
poorly of this variety, which eventually took a toll of Merlot
sales and caused consumption to plummet. a good film with
bitter memories for some, viewers or not. conversely, a comic
was the driver for a change of attitude in South Korea. We’re
talking about wine in general, in this particular case. Not only
was there a change, but a positive one.
The booster was a Japanese manga comic called Kami no
Shizuku (Drops of God) with a rather simple plot: a young
man must locate the 12 wines his father described in his last
will as the best in the world, comparing them to Jesus christ’s
disciples. Whoever finds these “disciples” first will inherit the
father’s wine collection. The main character in the manga
has to compete with his adoptive brother, who works as a
sommelier.
Truth be told, this manga was a screaming success in the
asian country. So much so, wine was the alcoholic beverage
featuring the largest growth in consumption in 2006 in South
Korea, while sales of other drinks dropped.
To be fair, the growing popularity of wine, regardless of its
origin or variety, is a phenomena that has been brewing for
some time now in this country. The trend is causing a change
in the South Korean consumer profile. Wine had historically
been a drink of choice among the members of an elite but it’s
now turned into the latest fad among businessmen, young
professionals and female consumers to the detriment of the
local drink, soju (a rice distillate) and whisky.
consequently, Korea has turned into a very attractive
market for winemakers worldwide. Most wine countries
are striving to get a stake of it thru marketing campaigns.
Some are thriving, others on the road to success. and chile is
certainly not lagging behind. on the contrary, our country is
among the victorious players.
THE WORLD’S LARGEST MARKET-TO-BE
In only a matter of three years, 70 chilean wineries have
penetrated the South Korean market, some with second
brands. In fact, 110 local wines made shipments to this
destination last year. promotional efforts started in 2000
with a seminar and a tasting show. Then, a trade mission
traveled to South Korea in 2002 as part of which two other
seminars (one general in scope and a specialized one) and
