Estamos,
pues de enhorabuena.
Two major events are set to mark the
Region of Valencia’s international presence
in this last quarter of 2006.
Firstly, we have the presentation of
the city of Alicante’s designation as host
for the start of the yachting event Volvo
Ocean Race, Round the World 2008
and, secondly, the kick-off for the first
season of opera and performances at
the magnificent Palau de les Arts Reina
Sofía in the Ciudad de las Artes y las
Ciencias in Valencia.
Because of their large-scale, worldwide
media impact, these two events
are set to promote the Region of
Valencia’s image as a society at the forefront
of culture and leisure, equipped
to offer the best of itself both to its own
citizens and to the millions of visitors
with an interest in these major events.
We have reasons to celebrate.

PAISAJES QUE CAUTIVAN EN LA COMUNITAT
VALENCIANA
CAPTIVATING LANDSCAPES IN THE REGION OF
VALENCIA
internacional. Desde estas páginas, le invitamos
a descubrirla.
One of the most outstanding attractions in the Region
of Valencia’s territory is its 17 natural parks and the
large number of municipal natural sites and protected
landscapes, making up a resource of incalculable
value, much appreciated by visitors at Valencian destinations
all year round.
In this issue of the magazine, we will be exploring
one of the most outstanding natural areas, because of
its proximity to the Mediterranean and its biological diversity,
plus its major commitment to sustainable tourism,
lying within the geographical area of municipalities on
the Costa Blanca with an internationally-famous tourist
image.
The mountain massif of El Montgó and its natural
park is a symbol and a reference-point for the people
of Xàbia and Dénia, easily recognizable when approaching
via the Mediterranean motorway. But this natural
park in the Region of Valencia allows for a kind of tourism,
now highly popular, that respects the environment and
is tremendously inspiring, helping us to explore the great
diversity or flora and fauna in our countryside, through
suggestive routes like the ones we propose in our
Traveller’s Corner.
Additionally, we also have a wealth of cultural heritage,
such as the Iberian excavation of La Bastida de
les Alcusses, in Moixent, a scientifically-renowned epicentre
due to its historical and ethnological importance.
We are also coming to the 75th anniversary of the discovery
of the small-scale but exceptional figure of the
Moixent Warrior. For the occasion, it is temporarily on
display in its municipality of origin, giving this cultural
icon even greater tourist value.
These give just some idea of the Region of Valencia’s
tourist offer, which is growing and innovating with
internationally renowned celebrations and events. Come
and find out for yourself.
LA SERENA, HOTEL DE AUTOR EN ALTEA
LA SERENA, A DESIGNER HOTEL IN ALTEA
Hotel La Serena • C/ Alba, 10 • 03590 Altea
Tel. 966 885 849
www.hoteleslaserena.com
Hotel La Serena is a small, designer
hotel located Altea’s old quarter, in
the Bellaguarda district, the oldest, quietest
one in this white town. The whole
construction is newly-built, although
its design is intended to respect the surroundings
as far as possible. The interior,
however, is just the opposite, with
a certain minimalist feel and some
pieces of furniture designed exclusively
for this hotel.
It offers ten rooms. There are sea
views from some of them, while others
give views of the way up to the church.
The rooms are equipped with air-conditioning
and include professional hairdrier,
television and music system.
The establishment also has five parking
spaces available for clients.
The hotel’s location is perfect for
arriving by car and then forgetting
about it: next to Altea’s shopping area,
ten minutes from the church square and
also ten minutes from the beach. La
Serena has facilities to let you escape
the heat, such as a small pool in the
rear part and a very lively terrace on
summer nights.
Among other services, the hotel
has a magnificent hamman, a private
area where you can enjoy a Turkish bath,
and a small reading room with books
available for clients and a fireplace
that is lit during the months of winter.
Hotel La Serena’s restaurant, with a
French touch, has a menu adapted to
each time of year. The wine menu
takes a journey through different denominations
or origin and was prepared by
the sommelier Javier Velasco. The
restaurant has capacity for 24 diners,
although it is enlarged in summer with
a pleasant terrace overlooking the old
quarter, offering the option for a romantic
evening meal.
FUENTES EN EL IVAM
FOUNTAINS AT THE IVAM
............................................................................................................................
ornamento urbano.
The exhibition “Fuentes” (Fountains) by
the plastic artists Alberto Corazón,
Evelyn Hellenschmidt, José Sanleón, dEmo
(Eladio de Mora), Alicia Martín and
Carlos Cuenllas is on show at the esplanade
of the Institut Valencià d’Art
Modern (IVAM) until the coming 14th
of October.
The proposal by Alicia Martin is a
homage to fountains that appear in literature,
while José Sanleón pays tribute
to rivers, water that flows by as
ephemeral as our very existence. DEmo,
meanwhile, presents two of his bears as
the main motif of his proposal.
Carlos Cuenllas’s work pays homage
to irrigation channels, water systems
that are closely associated with Valencia,
as old as farming itself. Alberto Corazón
gives his fountain an atmosphere of
the past and, lastly, Evelyn Hellenschmidt’s
work represents a solitary man moving
around the container, pursuing grand purposes:
water as the basic raw material,
acting as a way of uniting people and
regions and as a source of culture.
If we abide by Genesis, water originates
from paradise. Nowadays, fountains
are a glory from times gone by, the
supreme ornament of Baroque gardens,
relics from times when water emerged
from them like springs and covered
Neptune, Cibeles and the other mythical
characters decorating boulevards
and avenues. Because fountains, while
appropriate to decorating Baroque gardens,
are also perhaps the most impressive,
magnificent urban ornaments.
Volvo Ocean Race
El puerto alicantino albergará la
salida de esta prestigiosa regata
internacional a la que suelen
asistir cerca de 2.000
embarcaciones
set to start from Alicante in 2008
Alicante port will be hosting the
start of this prestigious
international yacht race, an
event that attracts up to 2,000
ships
The Volvo Ocean Race is the oldest leg-based round-theworld
yacht race. It is considered to be among the three
competitions with greatest media impact, and the last
event was watched by an accumulated TV audience of
1,300 million viewers, with the race broadcast to 200
countries around the globe.
In the year 2008, as announced by the President of
the Regional Government, Francisco Camps, the city of
Alicante is set to host, towards the end of the year, the
start for this round-the-world yacht race, which will set
off from Alicante port. The race, one of the most difficult
and demanding in the world, will be starting from
a Mediterranean city for the first time.
The start of the Volvo Ocean Race, which involved Spain’s
participation for the first time in 1981, usually gener-
ates an estimated impact of around 55 million euros, the
attendance of about a million people and 2,000 ships,
along with major worldwide promotion.
Over the coming years, the Region of Valencia will
also be involved in promoting the starts and all legs of
the yacht race, which will include China and the United
States for the first time.
OFFICIAL PRESENTATION IN ALICANTE
The official presentation of this extraordinary international
sailing event, with the backing of H. M. King Juan
Carlos I and the entire Royal Family, took place on the 29th
September in Alicante port with all the race’s participating
teams in attendance.
It is almost certain that Spain will be taking part in
the race, though the Region of Valencia will be working
to give this prestigious event the best start-off in all its
history, which will give excellent publicity and promotion
for the city of Alicante, which offers magnificent infrastructures
and conditions for the event’s success.
This designation, together with Valencia acting as
venue for the 32 nd America’s Cup, makes excellent public
relations for sailing in the Region of Valencia which,
beyond hosting and organising major international events,
transmits the image of Valencia’s tourist destinations all
over the world. Valencia is especially attractive for sailing
tourism and boasts ideal geographical characteristics,
climate, services and equipment, all the requirements for
making the most of sailing and the sea.
TELEVISIÓ VALENCIANA INTERNACIONAL
TVVi
The television that broadcasts the Region of Valencia around the world
Cuando nació hace setenta años, la
televisión vaciló entre una fantasía
y un capricho de científicos. Tuvieron
que pasar años para que se convirtiera
en un pariente discreto e insustituible,
muy quietecito en el salón
de estar. Hoy, la televisión es un
poderoso instrumento comercial,
político y cultural a punto de transformarse
en otra cosa.
¿En qué? La TDT -Televisión Digital
Terrestre-, las suscripciones por cable,
satélite, telefonía móvil e Internet no
tardarán en despejar esta incógnita.
A ello contribuye Televisió
Valenciana Internacional, TVVi, el
canal público de RTVV con cobertura
global comprometido con la tecnología
punta.
El equipo de TVVi se empeña
cada día en un triple objetivo:
• Acercar la Comunitat Valenciana
a los valencianos que viven fuera de
ella y promocionarla en el mundo.
• Mostrar todo lo mejor que identifica
a la Comunitat Valenciana: nuestra
oferta turística, nuestra riqueza
cultural, nuestras fiestas, nuestro
deporte, nuestro paisaje de costa y
de interior, y nuestra industria.
• Ofrecer las inmensas posibilidades
de un instrumento como TVVi, que
llega a todo el planeta, al sector
turístico así como a las empresas exportadoras,
y al tejido socio-económico
de Alicante, Castellón y Valencia
que se proyecta más allá de nuestro
territorio.
CVNEWS 8
When it first appeared seventy years
ago, television was half-way between
fantasy and a scientific quirk. Years
had to pass for it to become the discreet
family member, impossible to
replace, quietly installed in every living
room. Now, television is a powerful
commercial, political and cultural
instrument on the verge of becoming
something else altogether.
What? DTT -Digital Terrestrial
Television-, subscriptions by cable, satellite,
mobile telephone and Internet are
set to reveal the mystery.
This is backed by Televisió
Valenciana Internacional, TVVi, the RTVV
public channel with international
coverage and a commitment to cutting-edge
technology.
The daily objective of the TVVi
team is three-fold:
• To bring the Region of Valencia to
all Valencians living outside of it and
en to promote it around the world.
• To show the best things that identify
the Region of Valencia: our tourist
offer, our cultural heritage, our fiestas,
our sports, our coastal and inland
countryside and our industry.
• To provide the immense possibilities
of an instrument like TVVi, which
reaches all over the planet, to the tourist
sector and to export companies and
the socio-economic fabric of Alicante,
Castellón and Valencia with interests
outside our territory.
TVVi broadcasts 24 hours a day, seven
days a week. Its programming schedule
provides audiences with all the
news programmes from Televisión
Valenciana. Plus, every Friday night, the
weekly news report Dossiers, one of
Valencian public television’s longest-running
and most prestigious programmes
Spaniards and foreigners who have
heard of the Fallas in Valencia, the
Bonfires of San Juan in Alicante, the
Magdalena in Castellón, the Moors and
Christians in Alcoy or the Tomatina in
Buñol, can follow these and other popular
events, shown live every year via
TVVi, the only television channel that
broadcasts the Region of Valencia’s
best-known fiestas all over the world.
Additionally, TVVi offers sports
broadcasts, programmes and news:
Segunda División B football games,
basketball games in several categories
and international-level sporting events
that are held in the Region of Valencia.
Special emphasis and attention is paid
to local sports, such as Pilota Valenciana.
Tourism, as an offer and as a phenomenon,
is a well-covered part of
TVVi, which also shows, apart from the
above-mentioned programmes, a large
variety of self-produced programmes about
the endless leisure and entertainment
possibilities that are available in the
Region of Valencia, its modern architecture
and its design, contemporary art,
food and drink and fascinating views
of our natural landscapes.
Children’s and teenagers’ programmes
have daily slots on TVVi.
Babalà and Sambòrik give daily helpings
of humour, education and entertainment
for younger viewers. Every
day, the magazine Matí Matí also offers
a wide actual selection of affairs and
public services in the Region of Valencia’s
three provinces.
All of TVVi’s programme schedule
is designed with a system of three multiple
broadcasts on alternating days
and varying times, so as to allow all audiences
on the five continents to choose
the best time for them to see their
favourite programmes.
TVVi continues negotiating with different
television channels and satellite,
cable, mobile telephone and broadband
operators all over the world to expand
the channel’s distribution. For example,
the Asian television market is one
of the objectives most sought after by
the Televisió Valenciana Internacional
team and there is already a business
plan under study to carry the TVVi signal
to Asian countries in the year 2007.

In the heart of Iberian
Two millennia separate us from the period of greatest glory for a civilization
of the Iron Age, occupied the southeast of a peninsula which, as a consequence,
was named after them: Iberia.
agropecuaria, incluyen viviendas, talleres,
.........................................................................
BETWEEN TWO HIGHWAYS
.........................................................................
La Bastida was built on a rise alongside two highways
of exceptional strategic importance: a corridor, over
which the Roman Via Augusta was later to run, and
the course of the river Vinalopó. The Iberian princes,
chiefs of their people, controlled an extensive territory
and held power over the whole valley, from the
Plá de les Alcusses to the Vall de l’Alforí dels
Fontanars. For one century, the town never fell into
its enemies’ hands.
However, though we are still unaware why, during
its time of greatest glory La Bastida’s inhabitants
abandoned it overnight, after three generations and
after violent destruction around the year 325 B. C.
Although the reasons for its creation and destruction
are still uncertain and much disputed, reasons of external
military invasion can be ruled out. Recent research
suggests that it may have been due to conflict inside
the groups of Iberians themselves.
The Moixent Warrior, an ex-voto found in one of the
houses in La Bastida, is considered to be one of the
most important Iberian relics
The Iberians’ culture, and many of theirs customs,
withstood the test of Romanisation and have lasted up
to present day
The ruins of the town, whose economy was basically
agricultural, include homes, workshops, granaries,
stores and a large temple. The site was excavated
between the years 1928 and 1931, in four campaigns,
and the same year it was declared a historical-artistic
monument thanks to the magnitude of the discoveries
unearthed. In those years, the site was considered so
significant that the national press even christened it
the new Pompeii. The excavations were halted for a
number of years and it wasn’t until the decade of the
nineties when the Valencia Museum of Prehistory resumed
them to recuperate the site. This is also the museum
where you can admire a selection of the best objects
found in La Bastida: the Moixent Warrior, lead plaques
with Iberian inscriptions, ceramic crockery, personal
adornments, weapons and an excellent collection
of handmade implements and agricultural tools made
from iron.
.........................................................................
POBLADO
.........................................................................
.........................................................................
THE TOWN
.........................................................................
La Bastida, an impregnable fortress standing right on
a crossroads, is a large, walled town divided into two
enclosures, strategically located on a hilltop 741
metres above sea level and about 300 metres above
the surrounding territory. The first enclosure is three
metres wide with adjoining towers, while the other is
narrower and acted as additional control over the gateways.
The town has an elongated, complex layout and
stretches over six hectares with a hundred houses adapted
to the contours of the land and which are arranged
around a central street. Other, smaller streets perpendicularly
cross the main avenue and the squares,
some of which have water deposits, and interrupt the
linear layout. The city is surrounded by a walkway for
livestock, at the base of the ramparts.
Most of the homesteads, which face southwards,
occupy a surface area between 70 and 150 square
metres on a single floor and the interior is arranged
according to the inhabitants’ needs. The predominant
model consists of a main room, which the homestead’s
life revolved around, plus other secondary rooms.
The walls were made from adobe –sun-baked bricks
of straw and mud – and erected on a stone base. Facades
and interior areas were periodically whitewashed. In
the centre of the main street stands the house of the
Iberian chief or prince, a palace-style construction covering
a surface area of 324 metres, where a large number
of archaeological finds have been made.
The fortress has four access gateways, flanked by sturdy
defence towers and, alongside them, stand the remains
EL LEGADO
.........................................................................
a nuestros días.
La Bastida was built on a rise alongside two highways
of excepcional strategic importance: the Roman Via
cuchillos, lanzas, espuelas y escudos.
mundo subterráneo toman formas animales y humanas,
THE LEGACY
.........................................................................
The Iberians’ culture, and many of their customs, withstood
the test of Romanisation and have lasted up to
the present day. In a material sense, they have left
us equipment such as gyrating mills for cereals and
hundreds of cups. We should bear in mind that they
had great skill in working with metal and ceramic and
a large number of examples of both have been found.
The variety of relics unearthed demonstrate that La
Bastida de les Alcusses was a town where merchants,
craftsmen and peasants co-existed.
Everyday life in the Iberian town revolved around
farmng and livestock chores. The main cultivations
were dry crops - barley, wheat and millet - and legumes
- beans, lentils and peas - along with fruit plantations
such as olive groves, vineyards, almonds and figs. The
livestock, which provided wool, milk and leather,
consisted of goats and sheep and, to a lesser extent,
oxen and pigs. They also consumed the meat of other
animals that they hunted and fished in the nearby River
Canyoles.
The ceramic pieces found are decorated with geometric
designs in a thousand shapes and colours:
amphoras, jars for storing food, fine table crockery and
cooking pots. Produce came to the town from several
parts of the Mediterranean. Amphoras arrived there
filled with salted fish and meat produce from Gibraltar
and luxurious jars and cups from Athens, signs of the
Iberians’ commercial vocation.
They used iron to make farm tools, weights and
scales, falcatas - curved Iberian swords that could cut
a man in two with one good blow -, knives, lances,
spurs and shields. Personal objects like buttons,
belts and rings were made from bronze and they
reserved gold and silver for jewellery.
Another interesting discovery is a lead plaque
inscribed on both sides in southern Iberian script and
which, although it remains undeciphered, seems to
be some kind of commercial document. Other relics
found include working and farming utensils and exvoto
figures like the warrior and, next to one of the
doors, they even found a vessel with traces of blood.
The Moixent Warrior is an ex-voto or offering to the
gods and is considered to be one of the most important
Iberian finds. It is a bronze figure of a naked man,
seven centimetres high, shown with the specific
attributes of the ruling class: sword and horse. In one
hand, he holds his falcata and, in the other hand, the
caetra or round shield. He also sports armour and a
plume of feathers, a symbol of power in Greek style.
Their gods, located in the celestial vault and in
the underground world, had animal and human shapes
and many were winged. They communicated with
them through their ancestors. In La Bastida’s only sacred
building, an open-roofed temple, they celebrated the
community’s sacred rites and it was also the place where
offerings were stored.

LA CASA
.........................................................................
HOUSES
.........................................................................
The houses were private property and they even had
keys to lock the access doors with. Before entering the
fortified enclosure, an exact replica of an Iberian
house transports us to the past. It is the same house
that someone erected over two thousand years ago and
includes reproductions of some of its original inhabitants’
activities and lets you relive the domestic
atmosphere of a family that lived in La Bastida 2,300
years ago. The homestead, 125 metres square, reproduces
the first house excavated in 1928, and consists
of a central nucleus with a lobby, main hall, milling
and cooking area, a patio and a warehouse. A loom,
a turning mill, storage jars and amphoras, crockery,
bowls made from palm-bark and sewn esparto, farm
and kitchen utensils, baskets, mats and furs recreate
this Iberian house just as its occupants left it just a
few hours before the town’s destruction and abandonment.
The reproduction has been created with the same
materials and construction techniques that the Iberians
used: earth, stone and wood. The house has a stone
base for the adobe walls plastered with lime. In the
original houses, the base was painted reddish, blue,
ochre or black. The floor was flattened earth, although
some houses in the town had a cobbled floor. The roofs
were flat and sturdy, made up of a thick mesh of
beams and thatch that held up a thick layer of earth.
These houses needed continuous maintenance.
Today, La Bastida de les Alcusses is an archaeological
landmark, forming part of a landscape forged
by wind and water, a treasure that has revealed the
secrets of our ancestors, the original residents of the
south-eastern Iberian Peninsula, from the African
coast to the south of France, and which has left us evidence
about their life, their customs and about Iberia,
their name.
F
ossilized urchins and shells reveal the underwater
past of El Montgó, whose smooth, almost
perfect silhouette stands out between the ports
and beaches of Dénia and Xàbia. Nature is the word
that best defines this solid mountain massif, a spur of
the Cordillera Bética, caressed by the daytime breeze that
gently rises up its sharp outlines to the very top and where,
at night, total calm descends. The majestic Montgó,
sharp and arid in the distance, jealously hides a whole
world of life in its interior and offers attractive routes along
multicoloured paths between the sea and the mountain.
It is easy to enjoy nature in El Montgó, though without
forgetting culture and cuisine, which in Dénia and Xàbia
are every bit as impressive.
ATALAYA
WATCHTOWER
.....................................................
abruptos acantilados.
For a million years, El Montgó has
faced the Mediterranean like an enormous
watchtower, surrounded by the blue
of the sea and the sky and caressed by
a sea breeze that breathes life into it.
Long before, in the Cretaceous era,
the sea covered this territory and sediments
formed the platform which,
during the Pliocene, when Europe and
Africa crashed against one another,
fractured and rose up in huge blocks,
creating cliffs more than 200 metres
in height. Afterwards, over a period of
thousands of years, the forces of nature,
the wind, the sea and the rain worked
to carve out and shape El Montgó’s
caves, overhangs and impressive crags.
Many footprints have been engraved
on this mountain of limestone rock,
because man has used El Montgó as
a home and as a lookout. He lived
there, hunted, grew crops and found isolation
from the rest of the world.
Evidence of his presence can be seen
in the large number of remains from the
Upper Paleolithic and the Bronze Age.
The Iberians built a town on top of
Benimaquia in the 7th century B.C. and
the Romans used it for protecting and
guarding the busy Roman port of
Dianum. In 1014, the “taifa” (Arab kingdom)
of Dénia was declared and, even
today, Arab influence can still be appreciated
in the area, where place-names,
customs and cooking have resisted the
passing of time. El Montgó also has several
Reconquest-period hermitages
dedicated to the worship of Santa
Llucia, Santa Paula and San Joan, the
Monastery of la Mare de Déu dels
Angels and a unique series of towers
from old Balearic-influenced windmills,
built between the 14th and 18th centuries,
which took advantage of the
constant wind from the summit for
milling flour. The Gerro Tower was part
of a network of watch-towers for guarding
against attacks from Berber pirates
in the 16th century. Other interesting
features include the dry stone terracing,
typical of the farming colonies
that led to cultivation of the Moscatel
grape at the beginning of the 20th
century and whose emigration was prevented
thanks to a Royal Decree by
King.
El Montgó natural park, with a surface
area of 2,117 hectares, has a
5,386-hectare buffer zone to prevent
impact on its ecological isolation and
which affects, apart from Dénia and Xàbia,
the districts of Gata de Gorgos and
Ondara. The impressive, rocky massif
runs parallel to the coastline and reaches
its highest point at 753 metres
above sea level. The mountain meets
the coastline at Les Plans, a plain that
stretches to Cabo de San Antonio,
where the cliffs drop abruptly down to
the sea.
Esas colonias,
se cedieron a familias necesitadas
BÚHOS ENTRE PINARES
OWLS AMONG PINES GROVES
Diez kilómetros de costa agreste
y casi virgen se extienden desde
Xàbia hasta Dénia. Una costa
indómita de acantilados, cuevas
y calas donde flora y fauna conviven
libremente. En los acantilados
marinos del cabo de San
Antonio nidifica la gaviota patiamarilla,
hiberna la gaviota Audouin
y es habitual el cormorán mientras
que entre riscos y rocas ponen
sus huevos, ajenos a los gritos de
las escandalosas gaviotas, el halcón
peregrino y el cernícalo.
Halcones comunes, cuervos y
enormes búhos reales de más de
metro y medio habitan también
en las roquedas, vigilados siempre
por una pareja de águilas
perdiceras.
Los mamíferos encuentran
refugio y alimento entre coscojares
y pinares.
superficie. El palmito es la única
palmera que crece silvestre en
Europa y que es indicativa de la
bonanza del clima mediterráneo.
Durante años, el palmito estuvo
asociado a las actividades económicas
de la zona ya que se
empleaba en la producción artesana
de capazos y alfombras.
En los acantilados del cabo de
San Antonio se desarrollan plantas
adaptadas a vivir en fisuras,
grietas y rellanos y que soportan
la salinidad de la constante salpicadura
del agua.
Ten kilometres of rural, practically
virgin coastline stretch from
Xàbia to Dénia. An untamed shoreline
of cliffs, caves and bays
where flora and fauna co-exist in
freedom. The sea cliffs of Cabo
de San Antonio are nesting grounds
for yellow-legged gulls, Audouin’s
gulls hibernate there and cormorants
are common. Peregrine
falcons and kestrels lay their eggs
among the cliffs and rocks, unaware
of the gulls’ scandalous screeching.
Common falcons, crows and
enormous eagle owls, over a metre
and a half high, also inhabit the
crags, under the ever-watchful
eye of a couple of eagles.
Mammals find refuge and food
among the copses of oak and
pine.
Reptiles like sand racers, ocellated
lizards or Montpellier snakes,
over two metres long, are also
common in El Montgó and even
some specimens of Bedriagai’s
skink, a creature half-way between
a lizard and a snake, accompany
visitors along their journey round
the park.
However, life in El Montgó
doesn’t end there, as the underwater
area has, if possible, even
more. In the infralittoral area, at
a depth of about 25 metres,
sponges and precoralligenous
communities form the multicoloured
bed.
El Montgó, green and humid
in winter, takes on a multitude of
colours in spring thanks to the 650plus
plant species it contains,
some of them endemic.
In El Montgó, the Mediterranean
climate is characterized by a dry
summer period and a rainy season
that is concentrated mainly
in autumn.
Highlights among the park’s
plant species include Kermes
oak, rosemary and French lavender
on the peaks and Phoenician
juniper and dwarf palms on the
larger-sized ledges. The dwarf
palm is the only palm tree that
grows wild in Europe and gives
some idea of how mild the
Mediterranean climate is. For
years, dwarf palms were associated
with the area’s economic
activities as it was used in handmade
baskets and carpets.
The cliffs of Cabo de San
Antonio are dotted with plants
adapted to living in fissures, cracks
and ledges and to withstanding salt
from constant splashing by seawater.
humedad y frescura ambiental, helechos
espirituales. En la iglesia del convento
todavía puede verse el cuadro
de la Virgen de los Ángeles, encontrado
por unos cazadores en el interior de
un algarrobo, donde lo escondió un
monje antes de ser apresado por piratas
berberiscos y trasladado a Argel, junto
.....................................................
YELLOW ROUTE: COVA DE L’AIGUA-
RACÓ DEL BOU
.....................................................
Difficulty: easy.
Distance: 3.5 kilometres.
Approx. duration: 3 and a half
hours.
Altitude difference: 350 metres.
The yellow route starts at the modern
hermitage built in the decade of the eighties
next to the eighteenth-century cottage
where Father Pere withdrew to
pray and where you can find out about
the history of this Franciscan, a local
of Dénia, thanks to a series of Valencian
ceramics. A road leads off from near the
cottage, chained off to prevent vehicles
from entering the park. From that point
onwards, the road winds across one of
El Montgó’s farming colonies, abandoned
many years ago. These colonies
were granted to the area’s families in
need at the end of the 19th century,
for producing Muscatel grapes.
The route comes to a fork in the road
and, to the left, about 200 metres
ahead, a path turns off to the right
and ascends to the walls of the massif’s
north face. Thanks to the protection
provided by one of El Montgó’s five
flora micro-reserves and to the humidity
and cool environment, this is the ideal
habitat for ferns like the evergreen,
plants like the butcher’s broom and
other endemic species of Mediterranean
humid zones. It also features other
rock vegetation like wormwood, Roger’s
mushrooms or scabious.
L’Aigua Cave is accessed from the
rock walls via a fork in the path, heading
eastwards, leading to the foot of the
steps up to the cave. A Roman inscription
carved in the rock, dating from 238
B.C. and protected by a grill, welcomes
travellers. A little further up, the cave
collects water that filters through El
Montgó’s limestone and is retained by
an impermeable layer of clay. After
leaving the cave, we have to retrace our
steps and take the fork in the path
that heads west. This is the lushest area
of El Montgó’s shady side and is where
you can see some of the park’s more
uncommon species, like flowering ash
and terebinth.
The route downhill leads to Racó del
Bou or de l’Ull de Bou, so named
because of the shape of the rock walls
from this point on. The route continues
to the path of the farming colony,
then back to the hermitage of Father
Pere, where it concludes..
.....................................................
GREEN ROUTE: LES PLANES AND
WINDMILLS ROUTE
.....................................................
Difficulty: easy.
Distance: 4 kilometres.
Approx. duration: 2 hours.
Altitude difference: 10 metres.
The recreation area near Cabo de San
Antonio is the starting-point for the
green route. The path enters the forests
of Kermes pine and rosemary, which are
the area’s most common vegetation,
although heather and lavender, dwarf
palms and rockrose also accompany walkers
along the route. In the last days of
winter and in spring, the flowers add
colour to the forest floor and complete
the pine forest and scrub ecosystems.
The route comes to an old customs
barracks, now in ruins, but which for
years watched over the coast to supervise
ravines and coves, traditional hiding
places for smuggled goods.
The road continues southwards to
the Sanctuary of La Mare de Deu dels
Angels, and old monastery of
Hieronymites, now a centre for spiritual
exercise. In the monastery church, you
can still see the painting of La Virgin
de los Ángeles, found by some hunters
inside a carob tree, where it was hidden
by a monk before he was captured by
Berber pirates and taken to Algiers,
together with the whole congregation.
A cypress-lined path leads to El Montgó’s
eleven windmills, the only group of this
kind in the Region of Valencia. The oldest
windmill dates from the 14th century
and they were in operation up to 1911.
At this point, the route gives a spectacular
panoramic view over Xàbia Bay and the
mountains of La Granadella, El Puig de
la Llorença, el Peñón de Ifach appears
in the background, the Sierra de Bernia
and, behind it, the Sierra de Aitana.
The route returns to the recreation area
along Calle Penáguila, from the end of
the Camí del Monestir heading eastwards,
to Calle Cuesta del Cabo San
Antonio. The road runs past abandoned
fields, reformed farmhouses and some
crops of almond trees, vineyards and
carob trees until it returns to the Cabo
San Antonio road, which takes you back
to the recreation area, the route’s starting-point.
The area is equipped with
benches and tables in the shade of
trees, where you can have a well-deserved
rest after the journey is over.
Difficulty: average.
Distance: 2 kilometres.
Traveller’s Corner
Dénia Castle stands impressively over the city and its
fishing port, on the hill where the Vila Vella (old town)
was located. Its current perimeter was laid out in Arab
times, around the 11th century. The fortified enclosure
in fact comprises two; on one hand, the citadel
in the upper enclosure, where toward the Governor’s
Palace was built in the 17th century, now housing the
municipal archaeology museum and, on the other
hand, the “albacara”, acting as a protection zone for
the townspeople and soldiers, located in the lower part,
with a large rampart and its different towers, giving
it a markedly defensive appearance.
After the Christian conquest in the year 1297, the
population occupied the albacara, with this enclosure
coming to be known as the Vila Vella. Notable features
from this period include the Consell Tower, on a
square ground plan and with one Gothic-style doublelancet
window. Additionally, the walls still standing
in the town are half-way between the medieval Arabic
and Christian periods.
From the 16th and 18th centuries onwards, different
ramparts were added, as the town grew beyond
the Vila Vella. In the War of Succession, the town took
sides, as did the old Kingdom of Valencia, with
Archduke Charles of Austria, so Felipe V’s Bourbon
troops razed the town in 1708. As of the 19th century,
the castle was abandoned, until around the middle
of the 20th century, when excavation and restoration
work was carried out.
The modern growth of the town boundaries led to
the demolition of practically all sections of the old walled
enclosure, though five towers remain from the lower
segment, along the street known as “Ronda de las
Murallas” (the Beat of the Ramparts).
Dénia Castle stands above the town, recalling a time when political and military
power, as capital of the “taifa” (kingdom), filled this fortress with luxury
and splendour. Although most of the structure is Arab, Roman remains can
be seen, dating from ancient “Dianum”, along with subsequent fortifications,
because the castle was a strategic point in military actions like the War
of Succession in the 18th century. Nowadays, a walk around its walls gives
some magnificent views and it is even a prominent cultural venue where different
events are held and the Archaeology Museum is housed.
L’Espigó surge en la escena gastronómica
de Dénia hace aproximadamente
un año, fruto de un proyecto largamente
meditado del desaparecido Quique
García, de L’Olleta, y de Juanjo Sánchez
Peña, actual jefe de cocina. L’Espigó ha
conseguido unir la exquisita gastronomía
tradicional dianense con las nuevas
vanguardias y se ha convertido en
una cita obligada de los paladares más
exigentes.
españolas y a precios asequibles. Una
recomendación: la cerveza, muy fría y bien
tirada.
y 35.
L’Espigó appeared on Dénia’s culinary map
about one year ago, the result of a project
largely planned by the late Quique
García, from L’Olleta, and Juanjo Sánchez
Peña, the current chef. L’Espigó has
managed to combine Dénia’s delicious
traditional cooking with the latest trends
and has become a hub of attraction for
the most demanding palates.
The decoration, by Julio Guixeres, and
the attention given to diners’ personal
space, together to the atmospheric lighting
and the location of the premises,
beside the sea shore on Les Marines
beach, make L’Espigó a pleasant, cosmopolitan
place, where you can try the
most exquisite dishes.
Duck Fideuà and mushrooms with foie,
octopus carpaccio, melon canneloni with
fresh cheese, chocolate mousse or “tatín”
cake are just some of their specialties,
Television versus architecture
This architect-turned-TV-host got up from her drawing table
one day and ventured into the world of television. At present,
with an intensive background of over thirteen years in Valencian
and national audiovisual media behind her, she has returned
to afternoon television on Cuatro. The channel has found a topclass
resource in this Valencia-born presenter, able to give a
respectful, original perspective to celebrity news. Reflexive and
meticulous, Nuria Roca takes care of every detail in her work
on a television channel where female presence is fundamental.
Born in Valencia 34 years ago, she has an expressive face
and a captivating smile and, every afternoon, demonstrates
that she’s not blinded by fame and her only fear is that some
day she might lose interest in her work.
Empezó en la televisión autonómica valenciana,
¿qué recuerda de aquella época?
Recuerdo que era mucho más joven… Bromas aparte,
Yo intento no tener nunca esa presión.
no enfadarte.
No me gusta elegir.
donde he crecido y he evolucionado.
A veces no sabes cómo vas a
You started out on Valencian regional television.
What do you remember from that time?
I remember I was much younger. Jokes apart, I
remember it was the outset of a television where everything
was new, I was also tremendously keen to
learn and that I enjoyed the day-to-day work although,
truth be told, I wasn’t yet sure that this was going
to be my profession. I have very pleasant memories
of that time.
What do you think of TV at the present time? Has it
changed?
Things have changed a lot, from the audience to the
competition. How subjects are handled has also
changed, now it’s done from different perspectives.
Television has evolved greatly in recent years and in
some ways it’s improved, because things are done
better nowadays. As for the concept, I don’t know.
I think it’s totally different.
What is an architect doing on television? Are you never
sorry you gave up your career?
I don’t know, life holds a few surprises and it gives
you trains that you can choose to get onto or not. TV
crossed my path, I tried it and it ended up becoming
my profession. But architecture is still there. I
devoted time and effort to it and you never know.
When do you feel the greatest pressure presenting
a show, to achieve success or to stay on top?
I try to never feel that pressure. Nerves are inevitable,
though, considering the responsibility of making a
programme work. You have to bear in mind that, behind
the cameras, there’s tremendous work being done by
a huge team of people. In a programme, many things
are at stake and what you see is as important as what
you don’t. The image is just a reflection of that
work.
Viewers are used to seeing your best-natured
side on shows like Waku Waku, though you’ve now
changed to the world of show-business. Isn’t
that change a bit radical?
No, because I’d already done society news before,
in “Nada Personal”, four years ago. I think that
you have the register of the programme you’re doing
at any given time and that doesn’t have to be your
own register. I think that, depending on the programme,
you do one thing or another. I can be
more or less at home on a programme, but I
think the important thing is to always do it seriously
and responsibly.
How is “Nos pierde la fama” different to other
celebrity news shows?
The main difference is that we don’t try to judge anyone,
what we’re trying to do is to inform and to have
fun at the same time and, naturally, our lives aren’t
at stake in it.
How do you manage to avoid sliding into sensationalism?
Well, it’s as easy as not judging people. You can inform
and handle subjects with humour but not say if
something’s good or bad and, of course, not get
angry. It’s incredible, but there are people who get
angry when they judge others and then take sides
for or against. That doesn’t have anything to do with
how we work on “Nos Pierde la Fama”.
How do you combine your work and your family life?
Organising myself well and with help.
You started out as an actress in the series “Javier ya
no vive solo”. Would you like to repeat the experience?
It depends. If an interesting project comes my way,
then yes, but sincerely, it’s not something I pursue.
If it comes along, I’m interested and it’s exciting, maybe.
nuriaroca
Of the work you’ve done, which do you think stands
out?
I don’t like to choose. I like the radio and I like TV,
although TV is my natural environment, it’s where I’ve
grown and evolved. Most of the work that I’ve done
has good things and other not so good things. But I
can say I have special memories of “Nada Personal”
on Tele 5, though what I think most stands out is the
programme I’m doing now: “Nos Pierde la Fama”.
What do you like to watch on TV when you get home?
I’m more and more selective, though it also depends
on the moment because sometimes I’m one of those
people who can watch everything or not watch anything.
Do the audiences worry you?
Absolutely, those of us who work in this live from them.
Do you have a television idol?
An idol, no. Maybe the perfect communicator would
be taking several bits from different presenters and
putting them together.
And of the people you’ve interviewed, who stands out?
There are also lots. Sometimes you don’t know how
to approach an interview and then you come across
a gold-mine, especially when you have a preconceived
idea of the person. For example, that happened
to me the first time I interviewed Matías Prats, of whom
I just had an image from the news, and who I met
was an intelligent, brilliant person with a great sense
of humour. He might be one of the people who most
surprised me
Tell us something about your plans for the future.
I don’t like to plan anything, I like things to be immediate.
“Nos Pierde la Fama” is what I’m focused on
right now. In all of Cuatro’s projects, in the production
company, in the shop… As regards professional
matters, that’s what takes up my time and then,
of course, there’s my family and my sons.
Are you afraid of becoming a victim of your own success?
No, the only thing I fear is that I might lose interest
in my work.
A place to get away from it all in the Region of
Valencia?
I always get away in the Garbí Mountain, between Serra
and Náquera.
Fame doesn’t blind me, I’m just afraid of losing
interest in my work
The bodega of Andrés Valiente e hijos
Fuente Muela is the ideal place for
growing vines: at 700 metres above
influence of the Mediterranean and
appropriate thermal variation. The soil
is limestone-sand, highly suitable for producing
wines with a marked personality.
Andrés Valiente e hijos believes that
cultivation and modernity are the driving
forces behind their wines so they
have combined tradition and innovation
in viticulture.
The bodega works with maximum
The wine’s name, although it could
refer to a character from Don Quixote
called Ginés de Pasamonte, a bully, a
braggart and a rogue, actually stems from
the part of the property where this
given to this plot of land.
MUSEU HISTÒRIC DE SAGUNT
MUSEU HISTÒRIC IN SAGUNT
...........................................................................................................................
The Casa del Mestre Peña houses
Sagunto’s new Archaeology Museum. It
is located on the way into the monumental
site and inside the city’s old quarter, built
in Gothic style near Sagunto’s Arab
district in the heart of the medieval
town.
The premises, on two floors, are
considered ideal for housing a museum
because the building itself provides
insight into the evolution of the
town’s layout. On the ground floor, there
are four galleries with pointed arches
and the bay in the two outside arches
make room for an enormous window,
exemplifying its architectural splendour
and giving visitors a taste of what
awaits them inside the building they are
about to visit. On the first floor, there
are four rooms, walled off though connected
to each other, whose dividing walls
conserve original paintings, now restored.
The “Museu Històric de Sagunt” is
intended to be an interpretation centre
where the city area is understood as
an area much more extensive than the
just the urban borders, comprising discoveries
from around the district, considering
the process of Romanisation not
just as political, social and economic
change but also as a process of territorial
transformation
The choice of the name “Museu
Històric de Sagunt” dates back to the
installation that González Simancas
set up in 1925 in the Castle, to house
the archaeological finds he had unearthed
in the area around the forum.

RUTA DE LAS ERMITAS DE BIAR
BIAR HERMITAGES ROUTE
............................................................................................................................
Una ruta turística organizada por la Tourist
Info de Biar permite recorrer cada domingo
hasta octubre, tres ermitas, el pozo de
nieve y los rincones más emblemáticos de
la localidad. La ruta es gratuita y sale desde
la plaza de la Constitución a las 10:30
horas.
Tourist Info Biar • Av. Villena, 2 • 03410 Biar (Alicante) • Tel. 965 811 177
Every Sunday until October, a tourist route
organised by Biar Tourist Info lets you
explore three hermitages, a snow deposit and
the town’s most significant sights. The route
is free and leaves from Plaza de la Constitución
at 10:30 a.m. It lasts about two hours and
the itinerary covers approximately two kilometres.
The route leads to the Hermitage of
de San Roque, the Hermitage of El Loreto,
the Hermitage of El Rosser or San Ramón
and, via Camino de la Virgen, comes to the
Snow Deposit.
The Hermitage of San Roque, standing
in the San Roque district, has certain special
features as it is not at street level and,
in order to enter it, you have to go up a small
stairway and under an arch known as the Xàtiva
Gate, which was part of the old town walls.
The Hermitage of El Loreto, standing on
Calle de Cruz Capella, was built in Baroque
style. At the beginning of last century, it was
moved a few metres in order to make room
for a mansion on the site where the hermitage
stood and to give it more presence overlooking
the main street.
The Hermitage of San Ramón, about
200 metres outside the town, was built in
Reconquest-era Gothic style and its saint is
traditionally visited by pregnant women, as
San Ramón is the patron of women in childbirth.
The route concludes at Pozo de la Nieve,
an old, 18th-century snow deposit in perfect
SENDERISMO EN MONTANEJOS
TREKKING IN MONTANEJOS
Montanejos Tourist Dynamisation Plan
has opened five new paths in the spa
town in Castellón, bringing the number
of tourist interest routes in the
municipal area to a total of ten.
The already-existing paths GR7,
GR36, PRTV-126, BTT and the Bojera
have now been complemented with
the paths Monte la Copa, Los Castillejos,
El Castle, Morrón de Campos and Los
Estrechos, as new attractions for all sports
and nature enthusiasts.
The new offer in trekking shows
the Tourist Dynamisation Plan’s interest
in diversifying, improving and making
the spa town of Montanejos more
attractive to visitors and tourists by
providing it with a complete offer based
on the creation of varied tourist products.
Through Montanejos’ web page,
you can find out further details and the
new map of routes, along with other points
of interest in the municipal area, plus
important information about the spa town,
such as its history, its food and drink,
fiestas and customs.
The paths run through the rugged
countryside of Montanejos, a spa town
thanks to a spring that carries approximately
6,000 litres a minute, allowing
the River Mijares to recover partly
from the reduction it undergoes upstream,
where the river is diverted to the Cirat
Dam. The physiography of the channel
in this area has allowed natural pools
to form, making it an excellent bathing
area, now equipped with a picnic games
area. The waters from this spring have
a constant temperature of 25ºC all
year round, so they are classified as
hypothermal.
