Los más de 600 kilómetros de costa de la Comunitat Valenciana,
junto a las bondades del clima mediterráneo, constituyen uno
de los elementos básicos en los que se apoya la fortaleza del
modelo turístico valenciano. En esa extensa franja de litoral,
de norte a sur, se ubican excelentes destinos que llevan
muchos años satisfaciendo las expectativas de millones de visitantes
y confiriendo un prestigio nacional e internacional a nuestra
oferta turística.
Las páginas de este número de la revista recalan en Altea,
uno de los destinos más emblemáticos de la Costa Blanca y
la Comunitat Valenciana. En el Rincón del Viajero el lector
descubrirá las razones por las que este mágico enclave es conocido
desde hace décadas como un lugar con un encanto y
personalidad propios, que ha quedado grabado para siempre
en las mentes de generaciones de viajeros que disfrutaron de
una estancia especial en este bello municipio alicantino.
Excelentes playas junto a un animado paseo marítimo, una
oferta diferenciada de alojamiento y restauración, la posibilidad
de practicar deportes al aire libre en contacto con el mar o
el disfrute del senderismo por valiosos espacios naturales cercanos
son algunas de las cualidades que convierten a Altea y su entorno
en uno de los destinos perfectos.
Y si nos trasladamos, por esa misma franja litoral, al norte
de la Comunitat Valenciana, Vinaròs aparece ante nuestros ojos
como un entrañable destino marinero en el que se puede gozar
de cuidadas playas, una gastronomía con productos autóctonos
excepcionales del mar, coloristas manifestaciones festivas y
una variada oferta de ocio que, gracias a la implementación
de servicios como las audioguías turísticas, cuyos itinerarios
se describen en estas páginas, se ponen al alcance de mayor
número y tipología de visitantes, que así conocerán y valorarán
mejor los atractivos y recursos de este municipio castellonense.
Junto a estos dos municipios, la lista de destinos turísticos
litorales de la Comunitat Valenciana complementa globalmente
la oferta y se extiende con amplitud hasta conformar un gran

UN LITORAL PRIVILEGIADO EN LA
COMUNITAT VALENCIANA
AN EXCEPTIONAL COASTLINE IN THE REGION
OF VALENCIA
Over 600 kilometres of coastline in the Region of Valencia,
coupled with the benefits of the Mediterranean climate make
up one of the basic elements which supports the strength of
the Valencian tourism model. All along this vast stretch of coastline,
from north to south, there are wonderful destinations which
have met the expectations of millions of visitors for many years,
granting our tourist industry national and international prestige.
In the pages of this issue of the magazine we are calling
at Altea, one of the most emblematic destinations of the
Costa Blanca and the Region of Valencia. In the Traveller’s corner
the reader will discover the reasons why this magical spot has
been known for decades as a place with charm and personality,
which has been etched forever into the minds of generations
of travellers who enjoyed a special stay in this beautiful city
in Alicante. Excellent beaches along with a lively seafront
promenade, a varied choice of accommodation and restaurants,
and the opportunity to practice outdoor sports such as water
sports or to enjoy hiking in the wonderful natural areas nearby
are just some of the qualities that make Altea and its
surrounding area a perfect destination.
And if we move along, staying on that same coastal strip,
to the north of the Region of Valencia, Vinaròs appears before
our eyes, a charming seaside destination in which you can enjoy
the beautifully maintained beaches, exceptional cuisine using
local produce from the sea, colourful festive events and a wide
range of leisure activities, thanks to the introduction of tourism
services such as audio guides, whose routes are described in
these pages, and so making the attractions and resources of
this town in Castellon accessible to not only more, but also
a wider range of visitor, and enabling them to get to know and
appreciate it better.
Alongside these two municipalities, the list of coastal
tourist destinations of the Region of Valencia complements
and completes the varied tourist attractions on offer, together
forming a wonderful, natural, privileged space for tourism which
is hard to find elsewhere.

edición del FIB
El FIB ofrece en esta decimosexta un cartel
de lujo y para todos los gustos en el
que se ha buscado el equilibrio entre
grandes nombres de ahora como Gorillaz,
The Prodigy, Kasabian, Vampiro Weekend,
Lily Allen y Dizzee Rascal y grandes de
siempre como Ray Davies, Leftfield,
Echo & The Bunnymen, Ian Brown, Peter
Hook, PiL o The Specials. También hay
una cuidada representación de electrónica
de primera que va desde clásicos como
DJ Shadow, valores seguros como Boys
Noize, Calvin Harris y delicatesen como
la noche mancuniana que rememorará
las sesiones de Graeme Park, DJ Pierre
y Justin Robertson bajo el nombre del
club The Haçienda.
Entre los nombres nacionales se
contarán con los míticos Ilegales, los

Sixteen years of the FIB
Benicàssim acoge, del 15 al 18 de julio, el Festival Internacional de Benicàssim
(FIB). Desde su nacimiento, en el año 1995, FIB Heineken, ha ido creciendo hasta
llegar a ser uno de los eventos musicales de referencia internacional. Y es que el
FIB se ha convertido en un lugar ideal en el que se pueden vivir experiencias irrepetibles
gracias a la música y otras actividades culturales. Divertimento y enriquecimiento
multicultural se dan la mano en este festival, que este año cumple su decimosexta
edición, tiempo en el que ha recibido cerca de un millón y medio de fibers.

From the 15 th to the 18 th of July, Benicàssim will host the Benicàssim International
Festival (FIB). Since it began, in 1995, the FIB Heineken has grown to become
one of the most important international musical events. This is because the FIB
has become the ideal place to enjoy unique experiences thanks to music and other
cultural activities. Entertainment and personal and cultural enrichment all come
together in this festival, this year celebrating its 16th edition, during which time
nearly a million and half of fibers have attended.

Tradición y modernidad
Entre la sierra Espadán y el mar, en
Jérica, se encuentra una antigua
hacienda rodeada de olivos y almendros
llamada Masía Novales. Es
una antigua finca de labranza construida
a finales del siglo XIX y rehabilitada
por sus actuales dueños. La
casa, que mantiene el sabor y las
formas tradicionales, posee sin
embargo todas las comodidades de
hoy en día.
Masía Novales tiene seis habitaciones
dobles y dos suites con
salón privado, con capacidad hasta
cuatro personas. Todas las habitaciones
disponen de baño completo,
calefacción y televisión. Cada habitación
está decorada y ambientada
como una estancia personalizada y
se les da el nombre de las distintas
variedades de árboles de la finca.
La casa dispone de un comedor
con capacidad para 40 comensales
para los servicios de desayuno,
comida y cena. Anexo al comedor
se encuentra un espacioso patio en
el que se puede cenar bajo las estrellas
y disfrutar de una música ambiental
o en vivo. La gastronomía de la
casa es el resultado del mestizaje
del mar y la montaña, de la sierra
y del Mediterráneo, por ello ofrece
una cocina, que sin olvidar sus orígenes,
recoge los aromas de las
plantas autóctonas, para fundirlos
con los condimentos de la rica huerta
de montaña.
Entre las actividades que se organizan
en Masía Novales destaca un
recorrido por la vía verde Ojos Negros
andando o en bicicleta ya que pasa
a escasos metros de la casa, la recolección
de frutales según temporadas
y terapias relajantes como masajes
y yoga.
La Masía Novales está rodeada
de campo y tiene unas preciosas vistas
de olivos, almendros, cerezos y
pinos.

Tradition and modernity
In Jérica, between the Espadán
mountain range and the sea, there
is an old country estate surrounded
by olive and almond trees, called
Masía Novales. The Masía Novales
is an old farmhouse built in the late
nineteenth century and refurbished
by its current owners. The house,
which maintains the traditional character
and features, is also fitted
out with modern comforts.
Masía Novales has six double
rooms and two suites with private living
areas, which can accommodate
up to four people. All rooms have a
fully fitted bathroom, heating and
a television. Each room is decorated
and furnished in a personalised
manner and is named after one of
the different varieties of trees found
on the farm.
The house has a dining room
with seating for 40 guests for breakfast,
lunch and dinner. Beside the
dining room is a spacious patio
where you can dine in the starlight
and enjoy background or live
music. The cuisine of the farmhouse
is the fruit of the union
between the sea and the mountains,
between the highlands and the
Mediterranean, between meat and
fish, meaning that it offers cookery
which, without forgetting its origins,
combines the scents of native
plants melted into the flavours of the
rich mountain garden.
Among the activities organised
in Masía Novales, one which deserves
special mention is the journey along
the Ojos Negros green way either on
foot or by bicycle as it goes right by
the house, just a few metres away,
the picking of seasonal fruits and relaxing
treatments such as massage or
yoga. The Masía Novales is surrounded
by countryside and has
beautiful views of olive, almond,
cherry and pine trees.

Las bandas británicas Placebo y Editors,
el grupo granadino Los Planetas y los
belgas Vive la Fête encabezan el Low
Cost Festival de Benidorm, un certamen
musical que se celebrará en Benidorm
del 23 al 24 de julio. Junto a estas bandas,
otros 30 artistas como These New
Puritans, Diovy, Love of Lesbian, Lori
Meyers, Iván Ferreiro, The Right Ons,
Vinila Von Bismark & The Lucky Dados,
Jesse Dee y Tokio Sex Destruction,
actuarán en el Low Cost Festival donde,
como novedad, también tendrán cabida
grupos de Benidorm.
El Benidorm Low Cost Festival, certamen
de carácter internacional y vanguardista,
es una iniciativa que busca
convertir a la ciudad en referente musical
tanto en España como fuera de sus fronteras.
Hay que destacar que el grupo
británico Editors y 1990s son las últimas
incorporaciones a un festival que tiene a
Placebo como cabeza de cartel. El Low
Cost Festival se desarrollará en tres escenarios:
los dos auditorios de arquitectura
clásica del parque de l’Aigüera y la cercana
Plaza de Toros.
Entre las características principales
del evento figura el montaje de tres
escenarios para conciertos de música
indie, rock, pop, y electrónica; la celebración
de una muestra de cine documental,
previa a la celebración del
festival y que mostrará, al aire libre, grandes
joyas del género documental así como
el género biopic más reputado; una
feria del disco y del cómic y la posibilidad
de disfrutar de las Rutas Low
Cost y paquetes de alojamiento, organizados
conjuntamente con el sector
empresarial de la ciudad.
The British bands Placebo and Editors, Los
Planetas, the group from Granada and
the Belgians Vive la Fête are the headliners
at the Benidorm Low Cost Festival, a music
event which will take place in Benidorm
from the 23rd to the 24th of July. Along
with these bands, 30 more artists such
as These New Puritans, Diovy, Love of
Lesbian, Lori Meyers, Iván Ferreiro,
The Right Ons, Vinila Von Bismark & The
Lucky Dados, Jesse Dee and Tokio Sex
Destruction, will perform at the Low
Cost Festival where groups from Benidorm
will also feature.
The Benidorm Low Cost Festival,
an international and avant-garde event,
is an initiative which aims to make the
city a musical hot-spot both within in
Spain as well as beyond its borders. It
should be noted that the British group
Editors and 1990s are the latest additions
to a festival which has Placebo as its
headliner. The Low Cost Festival will take
place on three stages: the two auditoriums
in the Aigüera Park with their classical
architecture and the stage in the nearby
Plaza de Toros.
Highlights of the event include the
installation of three stages for indie, rock,
pop, and electronic music concerts; a
documentary cinema exhibition before
the festival and which will show jewels
from the documentary genre in outdoor
screenings, as well as the most popular
of the biopic films; a record and comic
fair and the opportunity to take advantage
of low cost travel routes and
accommodation packages, organised
in conjunction with the city’s business
community.

El director de orquesta israelí Omer
Wellber ejercerá, durante la próxima
temporada, de principal director invitado
y participará de forma activa en las actividades
del Palau de les Arts de Valencia
con la dirección de doce funciones de
ópera y tres conciertos sinfónicos. El maestro,
nacido en Beer Sheva en 1981, asumirá
la dirección musical de la Orquesta
de la Comunitat Valenciana a partir de la
temporada 2011-2012. En su debut,
Omer Wellber ofreció un variado programa
integrado por Obertura Leonora III de
Ludwig van Beethoven, Danzas sinfónicas
de West Side Story de Leonard Bernstein
y Sinfonía fantástica de Hector Berlioz.
Omer Wellber está considerado uno
de los valores de mayor proyección en el
panorama musical actual. En muy poco tiempo
ha forjado un sólido repertorio operístico,
que incluye más de veinte títulos.
Además, posee un conocimiento profundo
del mundo del canto y de la lírica en
general.
Sus actuaciones en la Staatsoper de
Berlín, donde es reiteradamente invitado
por Daniel Barenboim, y el reciente éxito
con la orquesta titular de la Scala de Milán
en memorables funciones de Aida han
marcado puntos álgidos de una carrera meteórica.
El maestro Wellber, asimismo, ha dirigido
numerosos estrenos en la Ópera de
Israel, además de conciertos sinfónicos en
La Fenice de Venecia o Verona, y producciones
de Aida e Il trovatore.
Actualmente, es director residente de
la Ópera de Israel y de la Raanana
Symphonette Orchestra. Ha dirigido
también la Sinfonietta de Israel, Orquesta
de Cámara de Israel, Sinfónica de
Jerusalén, Sinfónica de Haifa, Sinfónica
Israelí de Rishon LeZion, así como la
Filarmónica de Israel.
The Israeli orchestra conductor Omer
Wellber will act, during the next season,
as the main guest conductor and will
actively take part in the activities of the Palau
de les Arts de Valencia, performing twelve
operas and three symphonic concerts. The
conductor, born in Beer Sheva in 1981,
will take over the musical leadership of the
Valencian Community Orchestra from the
2011-2012 season. In his debut, Omer
Wellber provided a varied programme
including Ludwig Van Beethoven’s Leonore
Overture No. 3, Symphonic Dances from
West Side Story by Leonard Bernstein and
Fantastic Symphony by Hector Berlioz.
Omer Wellber is considered to be one
of the most renowned conductors in the
current musical scene. In a short time he
has built a solid operatic repertoire, which
includes more than twenty pieces. Moreover,
he has a profound knowledge of the world
of song and poetry in general.
His acclaimed performances in the
Staatsoper in Berlin, where he is repeatedly
invited to perform by Daniel Barenboim,
and his recent success with the orchestra
of La Scala in Milan in memorable
performances of Aida, have marked the high
points in a meteoric career. Maestro Wellber
has also directed several premieres in the
Israeli Opera, as well as symphonic concerts
in La Fenice in Venice or Verona and
productions of Aida and Il trovatore.
He is currently the resident conductor
in the Israeli Opera and the Raanana
Symphonette Orchestra. He has also
directed the Israel Sinfonietta, the Israel
Chamber Orchestra, the Jerusalem
Symphonic Orchestra, the Haifa
Symphony Orchestra and the Rishon LeZion
Israel Symphony Orchestra, as well as the
Israel Philharmonic.

AMPLIACIÓN DE LA RED FERROVIARIA
EXTENSION OF THE RAIL NETWORK
La ampliación y mejora de la red ferroviaria
permitirá conectar Valencia con Benicàssim,
Caudiel, Utiel, Xàtiva y Alcoy, llegando
hasta Alicante. El tren de la costa es una
de las apuestas más interesantes de
este proyecto, ya que comunicará el
litoral de la Comunitat Valenciana. El
President de la Generalitat, Francisco
Camps, ha destacado que este proyecto
dará homogeneidad y coherencia a todo
el territorio de la Comunitat Valenciana
y ha subrayado que complementará no
sólo el desarrollo que durante estos años
el Consell ha venido realizando en el
transporte metropolitano, sino que
también será fundamental para la llegada
del AVE.
El Jefe del Consell ha realizado estas
declaraciones en el acto de presentación
junto con el Ministro de Fomento, José
Blanco, del Plan de Inversiones Ferroviarias
de Cercanías, que supondrá una inversión
conjunta de ambas administraciones de
casi cuatro mil millones de euros.
El Jefe del Consell ha señalado que
este Plan es complementario a las inversiones
que se están realizando en la
línea de metro y tranvía, que ya existe
y que se está desarrollando, y a la comunicación
convencional que en estos
momentos tenemos entre Alicante y
Valencia, al tiempo que ha destacado que
se unirá definitivamente Gandia y Dénia,
una de las grandes reivindicaciones de
la Marina Alta.
El President ha resaltado la importancia
del Corredor Mediterráneo y ha apostado
por una red transeuropea que
comunique Francia con España a través
de Lyon. En este sentido, el transporte
público, y en concreto el ferroviario, es
una de las mayores apuestas por la competitividad
y el medio ambiente de las
sociedades del siglo XXI.
The expansion and improvement of the
rail network will connect Valencia with
Benicàssim, Caudiel, Utiel, Xàtiva and
Alcoy, going as far as Alicante. The train
along the coast is one of the most
interesting aspects of this project as it
will link the coastal areas of the Region
of Valencia. The President of the Regional
Government, Francisco Camps, has
stressed that this project will provide
uniformity and consistency throughout
the Region and emphasised that it will
complement not only the development
work carried out on the metropolitan
transport system over the last few years
by the Council, but also that it will be
important for the arrival of the AVE
(Spanish High Speed).
The head of the Council made these
declarations during the inauguration
event alongside the Minister of Public
Works and Transport, José Blanco, about
the Investment Plan for the Cercanías
Railway Network, which will mean a
joint investment between both entities
of almost four thousand million Euros.
The head of the Council has pointed
out that this plan will complement the
investments the Council has made in the
Light Rail Metro line, which already
exists and is being developed, and the
standard connections between Alicante
and Valencia, while emphasising that
Gandia and Dénia will definitely be
connected, one of the most important
requests made by the mayors of La
Marina Alta.
Camps has highlighted the importance
of the Mediterranean corridor and has
pushed for a trans-European network in
order to connect France with Spain
through Lyon. For Camps, public transport
and specifically the railway, is one of the
best ways for societies in the 21 st century
to improve their competitiveness and
to care for the environment.

Benidorm ha puesto en marcha un nuevo
servicio municipal de emisión diaria de noticias
a través de internet. El nuevo canal,
Benidorm TV, se puede visualizar a través
de youtube, twitter.com y facebook.
Además se ha creado un nuevo servicio en
Tuenti, donde se ha adecuado una página
de la ciudad con información interesante
para los jóvenes, al igual que se realizó en
Facebook, donde el perfil de Benidorm suma
más de 6.500 usuarios.
Desde su inicio, el nuevo servicio ha
registrado más de 15.000 reproducciones
de vídeos y entre los más vistos por los usuarios
de la red, se encuentran aquellos en
que la ciudad es protagonista de los mismos
y han sido recogidos por diferentes televisiones
nacionales o regionales. A estos
vídeos externos se suman las noticias
municipales sobre temas de actualidad en
Benidorm.
Con respecto a la nacionalidad de los
usuarios que acceden a los portales
donde se encuentran colgados los vídeos
de Benidorm, el grupo más representativo
es el nacional, con alrededor del 71%
de visitantes. Entre los vídeos más
solicitados desde España figura el de la
participación de Benidorm en la Feria
Internacional de Turismo de Madrid,
Fitur 2010 y desde Estados Unidos el
vídeo más visto fue uno referido a las playas
de la ciudad.
La importante repercusión que está
teniendo para la ciudad la puesta en
marcha del servicio de vídeos, con la
consiguiente difusión de la oferta turística
de Benidorm en la red, se complementa
con la información que sobre la ciudad,
su oferta turística, su oferta cultural,
educativa o deportiva publica el portal
municipal de Benidorm que recibe una
media de 27.000 visitas al mes, con más
de 19.000 usuarios únicos. En cuanto
al porcentaje de visitas nuevas, éstas han
alcanzado el 69,26%, relevante dato
respaldado por el efecto llamada de la
puesta en marcha del servicio de vídeos
sobre Benidorm.

Tourism Trade Fair in Madrid, Fitur 2010
and by users from the USA the mostviewed
video was one about the beaches
of Benidorm.
The launch of this video service is
having an important effect on the city,
with the consequent dissemination of
information online about what Benidorm
has to offer tourists, which is complemented
by information about the city, its tourist
attractions and its cultural, educational and
sporting attractions published on the
Benidorm municipal website which receives,
on average, 27,000 visits each month,
with more than 19,000 unique visitors.
Regarding the percentage of new visits, the
figure has reached 69.26%, aided by the

rocas calizas y areniscas. El río sigue blanco hasta Teruel donde se une con el
Alfambra que lo vuelve rojo y lo convierte en Turia. En Villel recoge las aguas del
Camarena y ya en el valenciano Rincón de Ademuz tiene como afluentes a
Riodeva, Ebrón y Bohílgues. Cuando abandona el Rincón entra en Cuenca, en
Santa Cruz de Moya, donde se encuentra con las aguas salinas del río Arcos. Poco
más allá de su paso por Las Rinconadas su cauce transcurre manso hasta Ribaroja
de Túria antes de pasar por la vega de Valencia y desembocar en el
Mediterráneo. Es precisamente Riba-roja de Túria el pueblo en el que, cada cinco
años, se le rinde un homenaje a un río del que recibe el nombre. En este evento
participan los pueblos ribereños y regantes y cuantas instituciones y personas
desean sumarse al acto.

he River Guadalaviar is the source of the crystal clear waters of the River
Turia, in the Montes Universales of Teruel; fed by stream beds in the mountains
of Tremedal and Jabalón, it runs through narrow limestone and
sandstone gorges. The river continues fast and clear to Teruel, where it joins the
Alfambra, which turns it red. From this point onwards, it is known as the Turia. In
Villel it is fed by water from the Camarena and in Rincón de Ademuz its tributaries
are Riodeva, Ebrón and Bohílgues. When it leaves this corner of Valencia,
it arrives in Cuenca, in Santa Cruz de Moya, where it meets the salt water of the
River Arcos. A little further along from where it passes by Las Rinconadas it flows
gently to Riba-roja de Túria before continuing through the lowlands of Valencia
and flowing into the Mediterranean. It is the village of Riba-roja de Túria where,
every five years, the inhabitants pay tribute to the river after which the town is
named. The residents of the towns along the river and those irrigated by its waters
and all the institutions and people wishing to join in all take part in the event.

Riba-roja de Túria es el pueblo en el
que cada cinco años se le rinde un
homenaje al río del que recibe el
nombre, el Turia, y en el que
participan todos los pueblos
ribereños y regantes, las
instituciones y organismos que lo
desean y los habitantes de la villa,
que acogen emocionados, en su
ribera, la manifestación de
agradecimiento popular al río Turia.
Todo empezó hace muchos años, en 1932, cuando
el autor de la letra del Himno a Riba-roja escribió en
el primer verso Riba-roja, la del Turia. Pero el nombre
actual de Riba-roja de Túria no se aprobó oficialmente
hasta 1955. En 1980, al cumplirse los veinticinco
años de la unión simbólica y oficial de la villa y el río,
se pudo conmemorar la I Ofrenda al río Turia, que era
un deseo soñado del pueblo de Riba-roja. Un río que
ha dejado en sus riberas las huellas de un riquísimo
acervo histórico y cultural. Un río que valoran los que
han vivido y viven de sus aguas. Un río que marca a
los pueblos ribereños y regantes. Un río muy querido
por muchos. Aquella primera ofrenda se instauró,
años más tarde, con periodicidad quinquenal.
La Ofrenda al Turia se fundamenta en un acto
simbólico de agradecimiento al río por los beneficios
que históricamente ha aportado, y aporta, a los
municipios ribereños y a los que aprovechan sus
aguas por medio de las acequias o para el consumo
humano. Con este motivo, se dan cita en la explanada
del río, junto al puente viejo, representaciones llegadas
de todos los municipios ribereños y regantes del
Turia, desde Guadalaviar, donde nace, hasta Valencia,
donde desemboca. La Comunitat Valenciana, la de Aragón
y Castilla La Mancha son las tres comunidades
autónomas que participan en la Ofrenda.
La Ofrenda al Turia, que se celebra este año el 11
de julio, es la culminación de casi un mes de emociones.
Todos los pueblos a los que une el río ofrendan,
desde el viejo puente, sus productos típicos y
tradicionales, unos obtenidos de la tierra como flores,
frutas y verduras y otros hechos con el corazón
como versos, alabanzas, bailes y canciones con los
que muestran su eterno agradecimiento al Turia. Con
ello, se hermanan los pueblos, se valora la riqueza que
otorga el río y se conciencia de la necesidad de proteger
y defender las aguas. El acto culmina con el descenso
por el río de los escudos florales de las tres
comunidades y el de Riba-roja de Túria.
Tras el Pregón de la Ofrenda, que tuvo lugar el 19
de junio, se realizaron muchas actividades culturales
como: el I Simposio del Turia, el II Concurso
Nacional de Artes Plásticas, el II Concurso Autonómico
de Artes Escénicas, conferencias, exposiciones, proyecciones,
visitas guiadas por el Parque Fluvial,
actuaciones artísticas de música, danza y teatro,
actividades escolares relacionadas con el río y recitales
de poesía. También, durante los días previos al
11 de julio están programadas competiciones deportivas,
de las que destacan las relacionadas con el agua,
y actividades autóctonas como el tiro y arrastre y la
pelota valenciana. Los pueblos y sus gentes tendrán
ocasión de participar en la Feria del Turia de Comercio,
Industria y Turismo. Muchas más actividades lúdicas
tendrán lugar en la magnífica explanada, junto al río,
lugar de concentración de la original manifestación
de agradecimiento al río Turia.
La Ofrenda al río Turia es un evento abierto a todo
el mundo, a todos los que están directa o indirectamente
relacionados con el río, a todos los que quieren
al Turia y a todos los que valoran el tesoro del agua.
Riba-roja de Túria muestra, con este homenaje, el lado
más humano de sus habitantes, los que nacieron
junto al Turia, e invita a la participación de cuántos
sientan algún atractivo por este querido río.
Every five years the town of Ribaroja
de Túria pays, homage to the
river after which it is named, the
Turia. It is here that all of the towns
along the river and those irrigated
by its waters, as well as interested
institutions and organisations and
residents of the town participate,
excitedly taking part, at the
riverbank, in a public expression of
gratitude to the River Turia.
It all started many years ago, in 1932 when the
author of the lyrics of Riba-roja’s town Anthem wrote
in the first verse “Riba-roja, the town of the
Turia.” However the current name of Riba-roja de Túria
was not officially adopted until 1955. In 1980,
twenty-five years after the symbolic and official union
of the town and the river, the “I Offering to the River
Turia” was celebrated, which had been a dream for
the people of the town of Riba-roja. A river which has
left the marks of a rich historical and cultural heritage
on its banks. A river which values those who have lived
and live from its waters. A river which leaves its mark
on the towns along the river and those irrigated by its
waters. A river which is adored by many. That first offering
would, years later, come to be repeated every five years.
The Offering to the Turia is fundamentally a
symbolic act of gratitude to the river for the benefits
which it had historically provided and continues to provide
to the municipalities along the river and those who
make use of its waters through irrigation channels or
for human consumption.
With this aim, people meet up on the esplanade
of the river, beside the old port, and representatives
from all the towns along the river and those irrigated
by its waters, from Guadalaviar where it has its source
to Valencia where it flows into the sea, come together.
The region of Valencia, Aragon and Castilla la Mancha
are the three autonomous communities which participate
in “the Offering”.
The Offering to the Turia, which this year is
celebrated on the 11 th of July, is the culmination of
nearly a month of excitement. All the people united
by the river will take part and offer, from the old bridge,
typical and traditional products, some derived from
the earth such as flowers, fruits and vegetables and
others made with heart-felt emotion such as poetry,
praise, dance and songs with which the people display
their eternal gratitude to the Turia. In this way the towns
all come together, the wealth provided by the river is
recognised and awareness is raised of the need to protect
and defend the waters. The event culminates with the
floral coats of arms of the three communities and of
Riba-roja de Túria floating down the river.
Following the Opening Speech of the Offering, which
will take place on June 19 th , there will be many
cultural activities such as: the I Symposium of the Turia,
the II National Visual Arts Competition, the II
Autonomous Performing Arts Competition, conferences,
exhibitions, screenings, guided tours of the river park,
artistic performances of music, dance and theatre, school
activities related to the river, poetry recitals, etc ...
Also, during the days before the 11 th of July sports
competitions are scheduled to be held, the water-related
ones, and local sporting activities such as “el tiro y
arrastre” (the throw and drag) and “la pelota
valenciana” are of particular interest. The towns and
their people will have the chance to take part in the
Turia Trade, Industry and Tourism Fair. Many other
recreational activities will take place on the wonderful
esplanade along the river, around which the expression
of gratitude to the Turia is centred.
The Offering to the River Turia is an event which
is open to everyone, to all those who are directly or
indirectly linked to the river, to all those who love Turia
and all those who value the treasure that is its
waters. Through this tribute, Riba-roja de Túria
displays the most human aspect of its inhabitants,
born next to the Turia, and invites everyone who feels
the pull of this beloved river to participate.

de un mercader

Pertenezco a una familia de
honrados mercaderes de
Vinaròs, pueblo en el que os
halláis y que hace años fue uno
de los puertos de mercancías
más importantes del mar
Mediterráneo”.
Así comienza el relato de la audioguía
infantil, una de las dos que se han puesto en
marcha en la ciudad y que recorren sus
lugares más emblemáticos.
El recorrido empieza en el puerto donde
Sebastián invita a cerrar los ojos y hacer un
viaje en el tiempo. Debéis imaginar –explica
el mercader- este mismo mar siendo surcado
por enormes barcos de vela, coches tirados
por caballos y un gran puerto de mercancías
por el que andan marineros y comerciantes.
De pronto Sebastián exclama: ¡Ah, el mar!
El gran amigo que nos ha dado la vida pero
que también ha sido un lugar de duro trabajo
y lucha para nosotros los mercaderes. Ahora
soplan otros vientos y el paso del tiempo ha
dado lugar a otro puerto muy diferente al que
yo os he descrito.
El puerto que ahora veis fue construido en
la playa de la Magdalena y todo ello gracias
al personaje que representa la escultura
frente a la que nos encontramos: El arzobispo
José Domingo Costa y Borrás.
“Hello friends. Allow me to
introduce myself. My name is
Sebastián Guimerá y Miralles,
the son of Don Jaime
Guimerá Castillo and Doña
Matilde Miralles Roca. I belong
to a family of honest
merchants from the town of
Vinaròs where you find
yourselves, and that, in the
past, was one of the most
important shipping ports of
the Mediterranean”.
So begins the story of the audio guide for
children, one of two that have been launched
in the city, taking visitors past its most
emblematic landmarks.
The tour begins in the port where Sebastián
invites you to close your eyes and take a trip
through time. You must imagine, says the
merchant, this same sea being crossed by huge
sailboats, imagine horse-drawn carriages and
an enormous cargo port with sailors and
traders walking around.
Suddenly Sebastián exclaims: Ah, the
sea! The great friend which has given us life
but which has also been a place of hard work
and struggle for us merchants. Now other winds
begin to blow and the passage of time has given
rise to another port which is very different from
what I have described.
The port we now see was built on the
Magdalena beach and all thanks to the person
shown in the sculpture we are in front of:
Archbishop José Domingo Costa y Borrás.

Hay muchas maneras de conocer Vinaròs, de recorrer
sus calles y asomarse a sus rincones más escondidos.
Pero, indudablemente, las nuevas audioguías para
grandes y pequeños destacan hoy sobre las demás. Las
audioguías, que pueden bajarse de internet gratuitamente

mercado, construido en 1928 sobre los terrenos en
los que estaba el convento de San Telmo, es una gran
estructura de hierro y metal, lo que propicia una gran
luminosidad interior.
Cada día, los pescadores y agricultores traen los
productos que obtienen del mar y de la tierra tras
horas de duro trabajo para venderlos en los puestos.
Sebastián nos invita a entrar en el mercado para visitar
los puestos de verduras, frutas, carne y pescado.
Junto al mercado, está el antiguo convento de los
padres agustinos, hoy auditorio municipal. Guimerá
explica que los agustinos construyeron su convento
en el siglo XVI en el barrio marítimo, fuera de las
murallas, pero debido a los continuos ataques de los
piratas turcos y africanos se vieron obligados a construir
un nuevo templo dentro de las murallas.

Following in the footsteps of the merchant, the
audio guide takes you to the municipal market, a large
red and green building in the Plaza San Agustín. In
this square, known as the Mercat square, meat and
fish were sold every Monday in the 19 th century. The
market building was built in 1928 on land on which
the convent of San Telmo stood, a large structure made

Every day, after hours of hard work, the fishermen
and farmers would bring their products from the sea and
the land to sell in the stalls. Sebastián invites us to go
inside the market to visit the vegetable, fruit, meat and
fish stalls.
Next to the market, which was the former convent
of the Augustinians, today is the Municipal
Auditorium. Guimerá explains that the Augustinians built
their convent in the sixteenth century in the maritime
district, outside the city walls, but due to continued attacks
by Turkish and African pirates were forced to build a
new temple within the walls.
The facade of the church is notable for its symmetry
and balance. Look -insists Sebastián- at the great dome
with its blue and white tiles, the colours of the sea.
LA CASA DEL CONSELL

Era el antiguo ayuntamiento, está sobre unos arcos
de piedra que dan a la calle Virgen del Rosario
desde la calle Mayor. Este pequeño túnel es conocido
como el Portalet y fue la entrada a Vinaròs en
el siglo XVI. El edificio se construyó en el siglo XVI
y su interior era sólo una sala pequeña con un armario
de madera para guardar los privilegios, libros y
papeles importantes de esta villa. La fachada es de
líneas rectas y sencillas, con un balcón, un par de
ventanas y la imagen de Santo Domingo de Guzmán.
Pero fijémonos ahora en la ventana, -continúa el
mercader- es una doble ventana de estilo gótico, con
forma de llama en la parte de arriba. A la izquierda
hay un pequeño escudo en forma de rombo con un
ala, único en la ciudad.
Si avanzamos unos metros damos con la Casa Ángel
Giner, ejemplo más importante de la arquitectura modernista
en Vinaròs.
La Casa del Consell was the old town hall, it is set
on top of stone arches leading to the Virgen del
Rosario street from the Calle Mayor street. This
small tunnel is known as the Portalet and was the
entrance to Vinaròs in the 16 th century.

The building was built in the 16 th century and its
interior was just a small room with a wooden cabinet
to store the privileges, books and important papers
of the town. The facade is made up of straight and
simple lines, with a balcony, a couple of windows and
image of Saint Dominic de Guzmán. But now let’s look
at the window, continues the merchant, it is a Gothic
style, double window, with a flame shape at the
top. On the left is a small shield which is diamondshaped
with a wing and is the only one in the city.
If we go continue a few metres we’ll come to the
Casa Ángel Giner, the most important example of
modernist architecture in Vinaròs.

La casa de Ángel Giner es el edificio modernista más
importante de Vinaròs. Al igual que sucedió en el
resto de Europa, las clases más ricas encargaron la construcción
de bonitos edificios diseñados y decorados según
esta tendencia artística y cultural que estaba tan de
moda. La casa de Ángel Giner fue construida en 1914
para acoger el comercio de la familia Giner.
Muy cerca está la iglesia arciprestal de Vinaròs.
¿Impresionados? –pregunta Sebastián-. Pues esto
sólo es el principio. Nuestra Señora de la Asunción
es el edificio histórico más importante de Vinaròs, un
gran templo claro ejemplo de arquitectura gótico-renacentista
con portada barroca. Durante la construcción,
la iglesia se fortificó usándola a la vez de lugar de
rezos y donde cobijarse de los ataques enemigos. Como
anécdota, -cuenta el mercader- que en 1880 el badajo
de la campana de la torre cayó a la plaza e hizo
un enorme agujero en el suelo mientras el rey Alfonso
XII rezaba en el interior de la iglesia por haber salido
vivo de un atentado en Madrid.
Comenzamos la visita interior en la cabecera de
la iglesia, desde donde se pueden visitar las doce capillas.
Cerca del altar, se puede observar la imagen de
la virgen Asunción de Nuestra Señora y en los lados
dos grandes murales que se representan a los patrones
de Vinaròs, San Sebastián y Nuestra Señora de
la Misericordia. En la parte de abajo del mural está
dibujado el momento de la llegada de la reliquia de
San Sebastián a la playa de la villa el año 1610.
Ángel Giner‘s house is the most important modernist
building in Vinaròs. As in the rest of Europe, the wealthiest
classes commissioned the construction of beautiful
buildings designed and decorated in the artistic and
cultural trend that were so in fashion. Angel Giner’s
house was built in 1914 to be the premises the
Giner family business.
Nearby is the archpriest’s church of Vinaròs.
Impressed? - asks Sebastián, well, this is only the
beginning. Our Lady of the Assumption is the most
important historical building in Vinaròs, a great
temple which is a clear example of Gothic-Renaissance
architecture with a Baroque doorway. During its
construction, the church was strengthened through
its simultaneous use as both a place of prayer and a
shelter from enemy attacks. As an anecdote - the
merchant reveals – that in 1880 the clapper of the
bell tower fell into the square and made a huge hole
in the ground while the King Alfonso XII was praying
inside the church giving thanks for having survived
an attack in Madrid.
We now move to inside the church, where you can
visit the twelve chapels. Near the altar, you can
admire the image of the Assumption of Our Lady the
Virgin and at either side there are two large murals
that represent the patron saints of Vinaròs, San
Sebastián and Nuestra Señora de la Misericordia
(Our Lady of Mercy). The bottom of the mural depicts
the moment of the arrival of the relic of San Sebastián
to the beach of the town in 1610.

Esta casa, construida a principios del siglo XX, perteneció
a la familia propietaria de una importante fundición
de hierro. Este edificio situado en la Plaza
Jovellar tiene planta baja y tres pisos, estructura que
se repite en todas las construcciones modernistas de
la ciudad. Lo más curioso de la fachada son sus cuatro
tipos diferentes de ventanas. Si os fijáis, veréis que
la rectitud de la fachada se resalta por azulejos colocados
en hileras verticales. Si os acercáis, podréis ver
los adornos imitando elementos musicales como arpas,
claves y partituras sobre balcones completan la decoración
vegetal de la fachada de color amarillo. Los balcones
tienen unas barandillas de hierro de gran belleza
que representan ramilletes de flores.
En la céntrica calle Socorro, en el número 40,
está la casa Barón de Hervés. Esta casa, construida
en 1716, tiene un aire elegante y sencillo a la vez, muy
común en la decoración de edificios renacentistas. Pero
no es hasta más de cien años después cuando la
adquiere el coronel Hervés. Fijaos ahora en la fachada
original del edificio. En ella podéis ver las grandes
piedras que forman la entrada de la casa rodeando la
gran puerta. El resto del edificio está totalmente reedificado.
En la misma calle Socorro y a sólo unos metros, en
el número 64, está la Casa Membrillera. Este edificio
señorial, conocido como Casa de los Membrillera, es
una clara muestra de la riqueza que Vinaròs vivió en
los siglos XVIII, XIX y XX, gracias al puerto y al comercio.
Mercaderes, industriales y nobles encargamos a
arquitectos la construcción de nuestras casas, casas
amplias y elegantes que dejaban ver que éramos gente
distinguida, con clase y dinero.
El edificio tiene una planta baja de entrada con una
portalada de madera. La segunda planta tiene un gran
balcón y en la última planta aparecen cinco ventanas
con pequeños arcos. ¿No os parece una casa digna de
un noble caballero?
La fachada es sencilla y elegante. En la parte inferior
derecha podemos encontrar un bloque de piedra
en el que aparece grabado el año 1652 junto a una
pequeña Cruz de Malta. ¿La veis? –pregunta Sebastián-
Por lo visto, necesitaron piedras grandes para construir
una base firme para esta casa y reutilizaron esta piedra,
que posiblemente perteneció a otro edificio.
This house, built in the early 20 th century, belonged
to a family that owned an important iron smelting
factory. This building located in the Plaza Jovellar has
a ground floor and three more floors, a structural
pattern which is repeated in all of the city’s modernist
buildings. The most intriguing aspect of the facade is
the four different types of windows. If you look closely,
you will see the straightness of the facade is emphasised
by tiles placed in vertical rows. If you come closer, you
can see that the decorations are made to look like musical
items such as harps, keys and scores on the balconies
complete the decoration of the facade in yellow with
plants. The balconies have very beautiful iron railings
made to look like bunches of flowers.
In a central street named Socorro, at number 40,
is the house of the Baron of Hervé. This house, built
in 1716, has an elegant and yet simple style which is
very common theme in the decoration of Renaissance
buildings. Yet it would not be until over a hundred years
later when the Baron of Hervé would be acquire it. Look
now at the original facade of the building. Here you
can see the large stones surrounding the big doorway
which form the entrance to the house. The rest of the
building is completely rebuilt.
On the same street, Socorro, and only a few metres
away, at number 64, is the Membrillera House. This
stately house, known as the Casa de los Membrillera,

in the 18 th , 19 th and 20 th centuries, thanks to the port
and trade. Us merchants, industrialists and noblemen

homes, to let everyone know that we were distinguished
people, and had both class and money.
The building has a ground floor entrance with a wooden
doorway. The second floor has a large balcony and on
the top floor there are five windows with small
arches. Doesn’t it look like a home fit for a gentleman?
The facade is simple and elegant. At the bottom
right we can find a block of stone on which the year
1652 is engraved with a small cross of Malta. Do you
see it? – asks Sebastián- Apparently, they needed
large stones to build a firm foundation for this house
and this was reused stone, and had possibly previously
belonged to another building.

Las montañas y los valles no son en Altea
propiedad exclusiva de la superficie. La
inmensidad marina esconde escenarios
hundidos en los alrededores de la illeta o en
la Punta de El Albir difíciles de imaginar. Es
así, porque el Mediterráneo que bordea la
villa blanca es profundo y azul, tanto que a
veces en el horizonte se confunde con el
cielo. El Rincón del Viajero propone un
recorrido por el mar, por la costa y por la
sierra de Bernia, una ruta por lo más
recóndito de Altea para descubrir sus
secretos. Un recorrido que empieza en los
abruptos acantilados del Morro de Toix y
concluye en Cap Blanch cerca de la Serra
Gelada, pasa por cabos y bahías, por playas
suaves de canto rodado donde el mar pierde
su energía y también por calas de rocas
impregnadas de salitre, modeladas por el
viento y por el mar. Un sol brillante y el
poderoso Mediterráneo marcan la vida de
un pueblo de casas blancas y encaladas
aferradas a lo abrupto del terreno, un lugar
todavía hermoso, un pedacito de la tierra
prometida para muchos, para los que si la
vida es bella, en Altea y a orillas del
Mediterráneo resulta mucho más bella.
In Altea mountains and valleys are not
found exclusively on the surface. The vast
seascape hides unimaginable sunken
landscapes around the Illeta or in Punta de
El Albir. It’s because of this, because of the

ACANTILADOS DEL MORRO DE TOIX

El Mediterráneo en Altea es limpio y cálido
y, aunque no baña una costa sólo de
arena, permite disfrutar de una variedad
de playas sólo comparable a la riqueza
geológica del Morro de Toix y la Serra
Gelada, las dos sierras que enmarcan la
bahía alteana por el norte y por el sur.
El recorrido por Altea empieza en los
acantilados de Toix, donde muere Bernia,
la sierra de cresta cimera y prodigiosa
naturaleza y termina en la Punta Bombarda
en El Albir, en l’Alfàs del Pi. El acantilado
de Toix, de casi trescientos metros
de altura, corresponde al plano de una
falla que forma parte de un conjunto de
fracturas, que rompen la serranía en su
parte oriental.

Siglos de desprendimientos y canales
de agua dulce han hecho de Toix, entre
Calpe y Altea, un lugar asombroso,
agreste e inaccesible. Allí se da un fenómeno
extraordinario y casi único en el
Mediterráneo, que consiste en la entrada
de agua del mar por la Cova dels Coloms
(Cueva de los Palomos) de Calpe y su
salida por otra a más de veinte kilómetros
de distancia. Parece incríble, pero
el mar aspirado en Toix va por una vía
de circulación y vuelve a salir por la cueva
del Moraig de Benitatxell.
A la Cova dels Coloms sólo se puede
acceder por mar. Cuentan los buceadores
que se sumergen en las profundidades
de este paraíso submarino que allí pueden
verse algunas oquedades en la peña
caliza del acantilado, que no son otra cosa

que pequeños manantiales de los que,
en periodos de lluvias intensas, mana
agua dulce de forma impetuosa.
Aunque hay constancia de ese acuífero
desde la época de los fenicios no es hasta
el siglo XVII cuando el eclesiástico e
historiador Gaspar de Escolano lo constata
en su obra Décadas de la historia de
Valencia: “A la banda de Poniente,
respecto a Calpe, viene un cabo o
montaña, que llaman de Toyx, a media
legua de Hyfach, donde a la misma
lengua del agua labró naturaleza una
cueva, que por los muchos palomos
silvestres que en ella se anidan, tiene
nombre de los palomos y no se puede
entrar a ella si no es en barco…”.
Escolano explica que la cueva tiene
cien pasos de ancho y cincuenta y dos
picas de alto, “…Junto a la boca de esta
cueva, a la misma lengua del agua, sale
de dicha peña un río tan impetuoso y
grande, que aunque no se dexa ver
como se entra en el mar, por ser allí muy
fondable, los vaxeles que allí tocan
sienten su furia, y de miedo a volcarse,
se van alargando…”.
Bajo Toix la cala de la Barra Grande,
la primera del recorrido, es una pequeña
playa de bolos y rocas de medio centenar
de metros y de acceso difícil por
tierra, pero con una zona de fondeo
segura debido a su moderado oleaje. La
Barra Grande, con fondos espectaculares,
es una de las calas alteanas perfectas
para el buceo.
DESDE EL NORTE

Tras abandonar la Barra Grande en el Morro
de Toix, el recorrido por la costa alteana
sigue con calas pedregosas erosionadas
por el eterno oleaje y termina con radas
de rompientes suaves, una ribera de
contrastes que se debate entre naturaleza
y civilización.
La Punta del Mascarat y el dique norte
de la marina deportiva forman una ensenada
protegida, excelente para el baño.
La playa de Mascarat Norte, de canto rodado
y grava, tiene también buenos fondos
para el buceo, propiciado por la
cercanía de Toix y la pureza de sus
aguas.
Tras Mascarat Norte está la Marina
Greenwich, un puerto deportivo con una
amplia oferta de alojamiento, servicios,
restauración y ocio. La Marina Greenwich,
por donde pasa precisamente el meridiano
de cero, el de Greenwich, acoge
más de medio millar de embarcaciones
y da paso a la cala de Mascarat Sur
o La Barreta de Gualda.
La recoleta cala de la Barreta, de 150
metros de largo y a la que se accede con
facilidad, mezcla finos cantos, con bolos
y algo de arena y es, junto con Mascarat
Norte, una de las playas nudistas de Altea.
La siguiente es la Solsida, de casi un
kilómetro y medio de longitud. La Solsida
es una playa de fuerte oleaje lo que
justifica su agreste fisonomía. Para llegar
hasta ella hay que recorrer a pie y

un difícil camino rocoso. El pasaje huele
a romero y espliego y el sonido del agua
del mar acompaña al caminante hasta
llegar a la agreste playa. La naturaleza
de la Solsida todavía no ha hecho concesiones,
no tiene rotos, ni construcciones,
no hay carretera, ni cultivos y el mar entra
y sale en los entrantes a tierra que él mismo
ha horadado.
ENTRE DOS PUERTOS

Entre los pequeños puertos de Mar y
Montaña, ahora Porto Senso, y el Portet
de L´Olla se extiende una playa de más
de un kilómetro de largo y de aguas
transparentes que alterna arena, cantos
rodados y roca, es la playa de l’Olla. El
camino costea, a veces se acerca a
algún pinar y otras recorre zonas suavizadas
de forma artificial, entre barcas,
velas, hamacas y chiringuitos. La playa
de l’Olla, una de las más concurridas y
populares de la villa blanca, permite el
disfrute sin límites del mar y del sol. L’Olla
fue un clásico lugar de veraneo de principios
de siglo y prueba de ello son
algunas de sus construcciones tradicionales
como Villagarcía, dividida en
varios apartamentos, y el palacete de Villa
Gadea, hoy sede de la Policía Local.
La más grande de las dos islas de
Altea, la illeta, divide en dos la playa de
l’Olla. El sol, el mar y el cielo abrazan
el islote verde y calizo en forma de gran
caracola y que cae en picado al
Mediterráneo por su parte más profun-
da. La illeta posee un paisaje peculiar,
verde durante los meses de invierno y
multicolor en primavera. Sin embargo,
el estío la vuelve parda aunque manteniendo
una explosión de vida en su interior.
En lo profundo, la illeta preside la gran
pradera de posidonia por la que nadan tranquilos
peces gitanos, falsos abadejos y morenas
negras, a los que la zona de protección
del parque natural de la Serra Gelada ha
dado un respiro en los últimos años.
En la parte final del recorrido por
l’Olla, la playa de bolos y grava desaparece
y se convierte en una zona de grandes
losas de piedra esculpidas por el
oleaje del Mediterráneo. El recorrido, por
el paseo empedrado, muere en el Portet
de l’Olla, uno de los puertos más pequeños
de la costa valenciana con capacidad
para una treintena de embarcaciones de
pequeños calado.
El Portet da paso al Soio, una cala de
poco más de cien metros de rocas y piedras
negras que revelan el origen volcánico
del cabo que la resguarda y que las
esporádicas invasiones de algas propician
su poca ocupación incluso en los
meses de verano. La pequeña bahía de la
cala del Soio, muy cerca de la pradera de
posidonia, posee fondos marinos espectaculares.
Un cabo rocoso con frondoso pinar y
que alberga el chalé conocido como la casa
del ministro es el preludio de la playa del
Cap Negret, una de las más largas de
Altea de casi un kilómetro y medio. Cap
Negret es de bolos, grava y también
con varias zonas de arena dorada.
La desembocadura del río Algar, hoy
un espacio recuperado merced a un
espectacular proyecto ecológico, se ha
convertido en un lugar de esparcimiento
y diversión. Con el plan se ha regenerado
el cauce del río, se han reconstruido
las orillas, se ha creado una senda de
casi dos kilómetros río arriba por el
margen derecho y se han plantado en
toda la zona recuperada las especies ribereñas
autóctonas. Un cisne blanco ha
hecho de la desembocadura su hogar y
allí, entre bañistas y pescadores, campa
a sus anchas ajeno al mundo que le rodea
desde hace más de cuatro años.
PASEO, PUERTO Y DOS PLAYAS

Tras cruzar el río una pequeña playa da
acceso al espigón, hoy cortado en algunos
tramos, y también por un camino al
paseo marítimo, uno de los paseos obligados
y donde se puede disfrutar de una
agradable brisa, en una de sus numerosas
terrazas.
La playa de la Roda empieza donde
termina el espigón. La playa, de grava,
bolos y arena dorada y bajo la continuación
del paseo marítimo, es la más urbana
y animada de la villa blanca, mide algo
menos de un kilómetro y medio y sus aguas
son tranquilas, debido en parte al hemitómbolo
sumergido que tiene frente a
ella.
El paseo muere en el puerto de
Altea, un animado espacio pesquero y
deportivo y con un Club Náutico relativamente

El puerto fue solamente pesquero hasta
que en el año 1977 se le otorgó la concesión
deportiva al recién fundado Club
Náutico Altea, que completó sus pantalanes
en 1981, inaugurando su actual
sede social en 1985. La flota pesquera
de una treintena de barcos, con gran
actividad, asegura un notable calado
en la dársena, con hasta seis metros de
profundidad en la bocana.
Tras el puerto, Cap Blanch es la
más sureña de las playas alteanas y se
funde con la de El Albir, en el término
vecino de l’Alfàs del Pi. Es una playa que
empieza como una pequeña cala junto
al Club Náutico, continúa con un tramo
de rocas y enormes piedras hasta que
finalmente alterna zonas de bolos, grava
y arena.
En la playa de El Albir de l’Alfàs del
Pi, bajo el espectacular macizo de la Serra
Gelada concluye el recorrido costero al
borde de un Mediterráneo que, según
los días, va del añil más intenso a un
brillante turquesa pero que siempre se
convierte en blanco al romper contra las
piedras. Un recorrido minimalista por la
costa de Altea, un camino hecho palmo
a palmo, por la esencia y los secretos
de una tierra prometida para muchos.
THE CLIFFS OF MORRO DE TOIX

In Altea the Mediterranen is clean and
warm, and although the coast is not
completely sandy, it does provide a
variety of beaches which are comparable
only to the geological wealth of Morro
de Toix and the Serra Gelada, the two
mountain ranges that frame the bay of
Altea to the north and the south.
The trip around Altea begins in the
cliffs of Toix, where Bernia comes to an
end, the ridge of the mountain range
summit and its phenomenal landscape
and ends in Punta Bombarda in El Albir,
in l’Alfàs del Pi. The Toix cliff, almost
300 metres high, is in fact a fault plane,
one of a group of fractures, which break
up the mountain range up in the east.
Centuries of landslides and freshwater
canals have made Toix, between Calpe
and Altea, an incredible, yet rugged
and inaccessible place. Here, an
extraordinary and almost unique
phenomenon in the Mediterranean
occurs; the water enters from the sea
through the Cova dels Coloms (Cave of
the Pigeons) in Calpe and leaves from
another cave which is more than twenty
miles away. It seems incredible but, in
Toix the water which is drawn in passes
through a route which brings it back out
through the Moraig de Benitachell cave.
The Cova dels Coloms can only be
reached by sea. Divers plunge into the
depths of this underwater paradise in the
hope that they may catch a glimpse of

some cavities in the limestone rocks, which
are actually small springs that, during
periods of heavy rains, impetuously spurt
out freshwater.
Although there is evidence of this
aquifer since the time of the Phoenicians
it was not until the 17 th century when
the clergyman and historian Gaspar de
Escolano recorded it in writing in his
book, Décadas de la historia de Valencia
(Decades of the history of Valencia):
“On the western side of Calpe, there
is a cape or mountain, which they call
Toyx, half a league from Hyfach, where,
the same tongue of water has naturally
carved out a cave, in which many wild
pigeons nest, it is named after the
pigeons and you cannot enter it except
by boat ....” Escolano explains that the
cave is one hundred steps wide and fiftytwo
high “... Near the mouth of the cave,
in the same tongue of water, an
impetuous and huge river emerges
from this rock. Although it doesn’t
allow us to see how it enters the sea,

because it is very suitable for anchoring,
the boats sailing there feel its fury, and
in fear of capsizing, they change
direction....”
Below Toix is the Barra Grande cove,
the first on the route, a small beach of
pebbles and rocks, measuring around 50
metres which is difficult to reach from
land but which does have a safe anchoring
area due to its moderate swell. The
Barra Grande, with spectacular underwater
scenery, is one of the coves in Altea
that is perfect for diving.
FROM THE NORTH

After leaving behind the Barra Grande
in the Morro de Toix, the route along the
coast of Altea passes by rocky coves
which have been eroded by the incessant
waves and ends at a bay with gentle
surf, a shore full of contrasts between
nature and civilization.
The Punta del Mascarat and the
northern dam of the marina form a
protected cove which is excellent for
swimming. The pebble and gravel beach
of Mascarat Norte, also has good diving
conditions, due to the proximity to Toix
and the purity of its waters.
After Mascarat Norte is the Greenwich
Marina, a marina with a wide choice of
accommodation, services, restaurants
and leisure activities. The Greenwich
Marina, through which the meridian
passes at precisely zero, the same as in
Greenwich, has more than five hundred
boats and gives way to the Mascarat
Sur or La Barreta de Gualda cove.
The secluded la Barreta cove, 150 metres
in length and which is easily accessible,
has a mix of fine pebbles, small stones
and some sand and is, together with
Mascarat Norte, one of Altea’s nudist
beaches.
The next beach is the Solsida, which
is nearly a kilometre and a half long. The
Solsida is a beach with strong waves which
is clear from its rugged appearance. To
reach the beach you will have to walk
along a difficult and rocky road. The
passage smells of rosemary and lavender
and the sound of the sea water keeps
the walker company until they reach
the rugged beach. The nature of Solsida
has not made any compromises, it does
not have any developments or buildings,
no roads, no crops and the sea flows in
and out of the ground it has bored
through.
BETWEEN TWO PORTS

Among the small Mar y Montaña ports,
which are now Porto Senso, and the
Portet de L’Olla, the L‘Olla beach
stretches for over a kilometre with clear
water and alternating sand, small pebbles
and rock. The coastal road sometimes
passes close by pine forests and sometimes
travels through areas which have been
artificially softened, among boats, sails,
hammocks and beach bars. The beach
of L‘Olla, one of the most sought after
and popular in the white town, allows for
unlimited enjoyment of the sea and sun.
L’Olla was a classic turn of the century
summer resort and the proof is in some
of its traditional buildings such as
Villagarcía, which is divided into several
apartments, and the palace of Villa
Gadea, now the headquarters of the
local police service.
The larger of the two islands in Altea,
the Illeta, divides the L‘Olla beach in
two. The sun, sea and sky cling to this
green, chalky, conch shell shaped island
which plummets down into the
Mediterranean at its lowest part. The Illeta
has a peculiar landscape, which is green
during the winter months and multicoloured
in the spring, however, the
summer turns it brown while maintaining
an explosion of life in the inner part of
the island. Deep underwater, the Illeta
dominates the great posidonia meadow
through which the barbell, pollack and
black moray fish swim quietly, the
protection zone of the Serra Gelada
natural park having given them a breather
in recent years.
In the last part of the trip through L’Olla,
the pebble and gravel beach disappears
and becomes an area with large rocks
sculpted by the Mediterranean swell.
The route along the cobbled pavement
comes to an end at Portet de L’Olla,
one of the smallest ports on the Valencian
coast with capacity for around thirty
small vessels.
El Portet leads to Soio, a rocky cove,
slightly over 100 metres, with black
rocks which reveal the volcanic origin of
the cape that shelters it and with sporadic
invasions of seaweed means it tends to
be quite empty, even in the summer
months. The small bay of the Soio cove,
very near to the posidonia meadow, has
spectacular underwater scenery.
A rocky cape with thick pine forest which
is home to the chalet known as the
home of the minister is the prelude to
the beach of Cap Negret, one of the
longest in Altea at nearly a kilometre and
half long. Cap Negret is made up of
pebbles, gravel and golden sand in
several areas.

The mouth of the Algar River, which
has now been recovered thanks to a
spectacular environmental project, has
become a place for recreation and
fun. With the plan the riverbed has been
regenerated, the banks have been rebuilt,
a path has been created which extends
almost two miles upstream along the
right side and native riparian species
have been planted throughout the whole
recovered area. A white swan has made
the estuary its home and there, between
swimmers and fishermen, it has done as
it pleases for the last four years, oblivious
to the world around it.
WALK, PORT AND TWO BEACHES

After crossing the river a small beach
provides access to the breakwater, which
is now divided up into several sections,
and also by a road leading to the seafront
promenade, which is one of the mustdo’s
and a place where you can enjoy the
pleasant breeze in one of the many
outside terraces.
Roda beach begins where the
breakwater comes to an end. The gravel,
pebble and golden sand beach, underneath
the continuing promenade, is the most
urban and lively of the white town,
measuring just under a kilometre and a
half and its waters are calm, partly due
to the submerged sandbar right in front
of it.
The path comes to an end in the port
of Altea, a lively fishing and leisure
area with a relatively young but highly
regarded Nautical Club. The port was only
used for fishing until 1977 when a
grant was awarded to the newly established
Altea Nautical Club, which completed
its docks in 1981, opening its current
headquarters in 1985. The very active
fishing fleet of around thirty boats
ensures a significant depth in the dock,
of up to six meters deep in the harbour
mouth.After the port, Cap Blanch is the
southernmost of all the beaches of Altea
and merges with the El Albir beach, in
the neighbouring municipality of l’Alfàs
del Pi. This beach begins as a small cove
near the Nautical Club and continues with
a rocky and stony stretch until it finally
alternates between areas of pebbles,
gravel and sand.
On the El Albir beach in l’Alfàs del
Pi, under the spectacular mountains of
the Serra Gelada, the path comes to an
end at the edge of a Mediterranean sea
which, depending on the day, alternates
between the deepest indigo and a bright
turquoise, but always turns to white
where it breaks against the rocks. This
is a minimalist route along the coast of
Altea, a road made, inch by inch, from
the essence and secrets of a promised
land for many.

Por carretera, la autopista AP-7,
salida 64, llega a Altea y la carretera
N-332 (Valencia-Alicante) atraviesa
la población. Posee estación
de ferrocarril de la FGV, línea Alicante-
Dénia. Hay servicio de autobuses
que comunican el municipio con el
resto de la provincia. El aeropuerto
del Altet (Alicante) se encuentra a
61 km.

the town. It has an FGV railway
station on the Alicante-Dénia
line. There are regular bus services
linking the town with the rest of the

EL PR-V-7 BERNIA

La ruta PR-V-7 Bernia es un sendero tipificado
como de pequeño Recorrido (PR),
dentro de la nomenclatura y clasificación
internacional, por las características
reducidas de su recorrido. La
codificación V-7 está asignada por la
Federación Territorial Valenciana de
Montañismo, responsable, en la Comunitat
Valenciana, de los caminos marcados.
En su totalidad, el recorrido del sendero
está señalizado con dos franjas paralelas
blancas y amarillas, de homologación
internacional. Los municipios de
Altea, Callosa d’En Sarrià, Xaló y Benissa
han firmado convenio por el que se ha
rehabilitado la ruta y se ha señalizado
y han editado una guía que recupera esa
tradición senderista y que se encuentra
en las oficinas de turismo de cada
municipio.
El camino va desde una altura de 90
metros a aproximadamente 900 en el
paso del Forat, una cueva kárstica que
permite el paso al otro lado de la sierra
en el término municipal de Benisa.
La primera señalización vertical está
en la Font del Garroferet, en las inmediaciones
de Altea la Vella. Sigue un corto
trecho por la carretera y, por un sendero,
entra en la urbanización Alhama Spring,
hasta un deposito de agua, donde toma
un antiguo camino de herradura. Pasa
por el área recreativa junto a las casas
y fuente del Runar, donde se puede
elegir entre dos opciones que conducen
a les Cases de Bernia, una por el Forat
y la otra por el Fort, un fuerte construido

en época de Felipe II pero que no se llegó
a utilizar.
El camino de la opción del Forat
asciende en diagonal hasta el pie de la
cresta y pasa a la vertiente opuesta por
el Forat. Luego por la Font de Bernia para
llegar finalmente a Cases de Bernia.
La otra ruta, la del Fort, flanquea la sierra
hacia Poniente para llegar al mismo
punto.
El tiempo estimado necesario para
las dos rutas es de casi dos horas.
THE PR-V7 BERNIA

The PR-V7 Bernia route is a hiking path
which is defined as short (PR), within
the international standards and classification
system, as a result of the reduced
size of the path. The V7 code is assigned
by the Valencian Territorial Mountaineering
Federation, which is the responsible
entity, in the Region of Valencia, for signposted
trails. The route of the trail is
marked out, in its entirety, with two
internationally approved white and yellow
parallel stripes. The municipalities
of Altea, Callosa d’En Sarrià, Xaló
and Benissa signed an agreement as a
result of which the path was renovated
and signposted and published in a guide
to promote the hiking tradition which can
be found in the tourist offices of
each municipality.
The path goes from a height of 90
meters to around 900 meters in the el
Forat trail, a karstic cave which allows
hikers to cross to the other side of the
mountains in the municipality of Benisa.

The first vertical sign is found in Font
del Garroferet, near to Altea la Vella. Next
there is a narrow stretch along the road
and going along a path, you arrive at the
Alhama Spring development, then to a
water tank, where you take an old horse
track. You then go through the recreational
area near the houses and the Runar
spring, where you can choose between
two options that lead to the Cases de
Bernia, one which goes by el Forat and
the other by el Fort, a fort built during
the reign of Felipe II but which was
never used.
The el Forat option climbs diagonally
to the foot of the crest and passes by
the slope opposite to el Forat. Then it
passes by the Font de Bernia, finally arriving
to the Cases de Bernia. The other

Morro de Toix and its impressive cliffs and
ravines, like the Mascarat cliff, reveal
their youth and give it the appearance of
being a high mountain. Old roads, once
used by masked bandits and militias who
would camp at el Fort, lead up to the summit
of the mountain range which separates the
two shores.

La receta / The recipe
ENSALADA ÁRABE DE CALABAZA, GARBANZAS Y CILANTRO
MIDDLE-EASTERN SALAD OF PUMPKIN, CHICKPEAS AND CORIANDER
INGREDIENTES (CUATRO PERSONAS):
200 grs. de garbanzos cocidos
500 grs. de calabaza
50 grs. de cilantro fresco picado
2 cebollas rojas picadas finas, 2 dientes de ajo picados, aceite de oliva y sal
Para el aliño:
4 cucharadas soperas de aceite de oliva virgen
1 cucharada de café de tahina (pasta de sésamo blanca)
Zumo de medio limón, sal y pimienta blanca
PREPARACIÓN:
Pelar la calabaza, cortar en dados y sofreírla en una sartén con el aceite, el ajo
finamente picado y una pizca de sal. Hacerlo a fuego lento hasta que esté blanda
y se deshaga. Apagar el fuego y añadir un cuarto del cilantro picado. Reservar.
Cocer los garbanzos y dejarlos enfriar. Mezclarlos con la cebolla y un poco del
cilantro y reservar. Preparar el aliño en un bol con todos los ingredientes,
batiéndolos hasta conseguir una mezcla cremosa. Al emplatar, colocar en la base
el sofrito tibio de calabaza, sobre ésta y en el centro los garbanzos con la cebolla
y el cilantro. Repartir el aliño por encima con la ayuda de una cuchara. Para decorar,
espolvorear el resto del cilantro fresco.
INGREDIENTS (FOUR PEOPLE):
200 grams of cooked chickpeas
500 grams of pumpkin
50 grams of freshly chopped coriander
2 finely chopped red onions
2 chopped garlic cloves
Olive oil
Salt
For the dressing:
4 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil
1 teaspoon of tahini (white sesame paste),
The juice of half a lemon, salt and white pepper
PREPARATION
Peel the pumpkin, dice into cubes and fry in a pan with the olive oil, the finely
sliced garlic and a pinch of salt. Fry over a low heat until it becomes soft and
starts to break up. Turn off the heat and add one quarter of the chopped
coriander. Set aside. Cook the chickpeas and allow them to cool. Mix them with
the onion and a little coriander and set aside. Prepare the dressing in a bowl with
all ingredients, beating until a creamy mixture is achieved. When plating up, place
the warm pumpkin at the bottom as the base, then place the chickpeas with the
onion and coriander on top of it, in the centre. Drizzle the dressing over with the
help of a spoon. To decorate, sprinkle over the remaining fresh coriander.

David Villa (Tuilla, 1981) se ha
ganado el sobrenombre de El Guaje, chiquillo en bable, porque
siempre midió su fútbol con los mayores. Nacido y forjado en
Asturias, Villa, que militó en el Valencia CF desde la
temporada de 2005 hasta este mismo año, es uno de los
genios del fútbol español. Una lesión en el fémur de la pierna
derecha extrajo su tenacidad y, bien por necesidad, bien por
evitar desprenderse de ese amor a primera vista que sintió por
el balón desde su más tierna infancia, potenció el trabajo con
la izquierda y se convirtió en un futbolista ambidiestro. Villa,
accionista del Valencia CF, asegura en una carta enviada
semanas atrás a la afición que para él ha sido un gran orgullo
vestir la camiseta valencianista y el brazalete de capitán. David
Villa dice sentirse tan valenciano como sus dos hijas y que
llevará siempre Valencia y el club en su corazón. “Me marcho
con la satisfacción de que el equipo vuelve a donde merece
estar cada año, luchando entre los mejores de Europa en la
Champions League”.

¿Cuándo y por qué empezó a jugar al fútbol?
Desde que recuerdo creo que siempre he estado con
un balón entre los pies. Supongo que, como todos los
chavales, por diversión, para jugar con mis amigos.
¿Disfruta jugando o la presión no le deja?
Lógicamente, cuando vas progresando en tu carrera
cada vez tienes más responsabilidad porque tu equipo
y tú os jugáis más. Sin embargo, cada vez que salgo
a un terreno de juego sólo pienso en disfrutar, en hacer
las cosas bien y en ganar. Pienso que cuando un futbolista
deja de disfrutar sobre el campo no puede hacer
las cosas bien. Cuando llegue ese momento imagino
que será el momento de pensar en la retirada.
¿Es el campo de Mestalla un lugar emblemático del
fútbol español?
Sí, lo he pensado siempre. Es un campo muy cerra-
do, casi siempre se llena y tiene la capacidad de llevar
en volandas al equipo. Se han vivido momentos
muy importantes en Mestalla. Cuando el equipo
pueda cambiarse al nuevo estadio, se recordará al actual
como un feudo mítico.
El deporte necesita una disciplina muy severa, ¿a qué
ha renunciado por el fútbol?
Al final, entre entrenamientos, partidos, viajes y compromisos
no tienes apenas tiempo libre para tu familia
y tus amigos. Además, el fútbol al más alto nivel
es el deporte más popular y eso hace que a partir de
determinado momento dejas de ser una persona anónima,
algo que puedes echar en falta en algunos
momentos. Sin embargo, el fútbol me ha dado todo
lo que tengo, así es que no puedo sino considerarme
un afortunado por ello.
Intento aprovechar el tiempo libre que me deja el fútbol
para disfrutar, sobre todo, de mi familia, de mis dos hijas
pequeñas

Su papel en la selección española ha sido estelar, ¿cómo
ve su futuro en ella?
En el fútbol es mejor pensar sólo en lo más inmediato,
que en este caso es el Mundial. Como ya he repetido,
creo que es una oportunidad inmejorable para que
la Selección pueda conseguir algo histórico. Es muy
difícil, por algo no se ha logrado nunca, pero espero
poder aportar mi granito de arena, como ocurrió en
la Eurocopa.
¿Qué es más difícil en una carrera futbolística llegar
o mantenerse?
Creo que lo segundo. Cuando llega un nuevo partido
todo lo que has podido hacer hasta ese momento es

Todos los días aprendo algo e intento mejorar en mi
juego. El día que un jugador piense que ya no tiene

¿Qué le hizo venir al Valencia C.F.?
Que era y es uno de los grandes de España y de Europa.
Es el club en el que me he sentido feliz e importante
y el que me ha permitido llegar hasta donde me
encuentro ahora.
¿Cual ha sido el mejor momento de su carrera?
Imagino que el título de la Eurocopa. Era un éxito muy
deseado por todo el fútbol español y haber colaborado
en conseguirlo fue un gran orgullo. También el
título de Copa con el Valencia, llegó en un momento
difícil.
Y, ¿le gustaría borrar algo?
Siempre hay momentos en que piensas que ojalá las
cosas hubieran sido de otra forma pero siempre hay
que pasar página y preocuparse del presente.
¿Cómo lleva ser famoso en todo el mundo?
Como ya he dicho, se asume con naturalidad, es
consecuencia de la popularidad del fútbol y es algo
positivo, porque significa que la gente valora que
haces bien tu trabajo.
¿Tiene todavía algún sueño como jugador?
Muchos, títulos como la Champions o el Mundial, por
ejemplo.
¿Qué hace cuando no juega al fútbol?
Soy una persona muy normal. Intento aprovechar el
tiempo libre que me deja el fútbol para disfrutar, sobre
todo, de mi familia, de mis dos hijas pequeñas.
¿Hay algún lugar de la Comunitat Valenciana en el que
desconecte?
En la Comunitat Valenciana hay muchas playas magníficas,
no sólo las de los lugares más turísticos.
Cualquiera de ellas es un sitio ideal para disfrutar de
un buen descanso…
When and why did you start playing football?
As far back as I can remember, I think I’ve always had
a ball at my feet. Like all lads, I guess, for fun, to play
with my friends.
Do you enjoy playing or does the pressure get in your
way?
Logically, when you’re progressing in your career you
have more and more responsibility because you and
your team have more to play for. However, every time
I go out onto the pitch, I only think of enjoying myself,
playing well and winning. I think that when foot-

Sport requires very strict discipline. What have you given
up for football?
In the end, between training sessions, matches, travelling
and commitments, you hardly have any free time
for your family and friends. Also, football at the highest
level is the most popular sport and so, after a certain
point, you’re no longer anonymous, which you can some-
times miss. Nevertheless, football has given me everything
I have, so I can only think myself lucky for it.
You’ve played a stellar role on the Spanish team.
How do you see your future there?
In football, it’s best just to think about the short
term, which is now the World Cup. As I’ve already said,
I think it’s an unrivalled opportunity for the team to
make history. It’s very difficult, as it’s never been
done, but I hope to be able to play my part, as I did
in the European Cup.
As a footballer, is it more difficult to make it or to stay
there?
The latter, I think. For each new match, everything you’ve
done before is history and is worth nothing if you don’t
give it your very best, to keep improving.
Is there anything left for you to learn about football?
I learn something every day, and try to improve my game.

Winning the European Cup, I guess. It was a muchsought-after
title for the whole of Spanish football and
I’m really proud to have been a part of it. And also
the Cup title with Valencia, which came at a difficult
time.
And is there anything you’d like to erase?
There are always times when you wish things had been
different but you’ve always got to move on and deal
with the present.
How do you cope with being world famous?
As I’ve said, it comes naturally as a result of football’s
popularity and it’s a positive thing, because it means
people appreciate that you’re good at what you do.
Do you still have any particular dream as a player?
Lots. Titles like the Champions League or the World
Cup, for example.
What do you do when not playing football?
I’m a very normal person. I try to make the most of
my free time outside of football to have fun with my
family, with my two young daughters in particular.
Is there anywhere in the Region of Valencia where you
like to relax?
There are many great beaches in the Region, not just
the most touristy. Any one of these is perfect for kicking

El Blanco 2009 Clos d’esgarracordes es
uno de los cuatro vinos producidos por
la Bodega Barón d’Alba que se encuentra
precisamente en el Clos d´esgarracordes,
un pago de cinco hectáreas rodeado de
viñedos con un microclima excelente
para el cultivo de la vid que da nombre
a todos los vinos de la bodega.
Barón d’Alba inició su andadura en
2001 con la construcción de una bodega
en la finca y que hoy está provista
de las últimas tecnologías para la elaboración
de vinos de alta expresión y calidad.
El pago tiene una producción total
de 18 hectáreas de viñedos de variedades
como cabernet sauvignon, merlot, syrah,
tempranillo, monastrell, garnacha y
macabeo.
La vendimia se realiza a mano, con
una primera selección del fruto, y se transporta
en cajas de diez kilos para no
dañar los racimos. Al llegar a bodega se
hace un control de calidad en una mesa
de selección, de manera que sólo se elaboran
uvas de máxima calidad.
Todos los depósitos son de acero inoxidable
y están dotados de camisas de frío
para controlar la temperatura durante la
fermentación. La capacidad de elaboración
es de 60 mil litros. En el caso de
los vinos tintos, hacen la fermentación
malolática en tina de roble y a continuación
pasan a descansar en el parque de
barricas para así proceder a su crianza
en roble. Actualmente, Barón d’Alba
produce unas 38 mil botellas al año.
Bodegas y viñedos Barón d’Alba pertenece
a la asociación vino de la tierra de
Castellón desde el año 2006.

floral combinado con una acidez fresca.
Es un vino redondo, sabroso y con

Clos d’esgarracordes, this 2009 white,
is one of four wines produced by the Barón
d’Alba Winery which is located in Clos
d´esgarracordes itself, on a five hectare
estate surrounded by vineyards with an
excellent microclimate for grapevine
cultivation, after which all of the winery’s
products are named.
Barón d’Alba began operation in
2001 with the construction of a winery
on the estate which nowadays is equipped
with the latest technology for making highly
expressive and high quality wines. The
winery has 18 hectares of vineyards
and produces varieties such as cabernet
sauvignon, merlot, syrah, tempranillo,
monastrell, grenache and macabeo.
The grape harvest is carried out by
hand, selecting only the best fruit, which
is then transported in ten kilo boxes so
as not to damage the bunches. Upon arrival
at the winery quality control is carried
out, so that only the highest quality
grapes are used in production.
All of the storage tanks are made of
stainless steel and are fitted with cold
insulation in order to control the
temperature during fermentation. The
production capacity is 60 thousand
litres. In the case of red wines, they go
through the process of malolactic
fermentation in oak barrels and then rest
in the barrels, to later be aged in oak
(crianza). Barón d’Alba currently produces
some 38 thousand bottles a year. Barón
d’Alba Wineries and Vineyards has
belonged to the Castellón wine of the land
association since 2006.

imágenes generadas por ordenador con
lo que se ha conseguido una atmósfera
audiovisual única. L’Hemisfèric se
inauguró en 1998 y fue el primer
edificio de la Ciudad de las Artes y las
Ciencias que abrió sus puertas al público.
Es una obra espectacular, diseñada
por Santiago Calatrava, que cuenta con
una cubierta ovoide de más de cien metros
de longitud y que alberga en su interior
la gran esfera que constituye la sala de
proyecciones.
Viaje mágico a África, producida
por Orbita Max, cuenta la historia de Jana
que, conmovida por su encuentro con
un niño bosquimano que conoce en
las calles de Barcelona, emprende un
viaje imaginario por el desierto de
Namibia acompañada por su fiel caballo
alado. Busca respuestas a un sinfín de
preguntas que surgen a raíz de sus
encuentros con otros niños, animales
y fenómenos naturales. Descubre las
difíciles condiciones de vida de los
habitantes del desierto y como se las
arreglan para sobrevivir.
La película está dirigida, escrita y
producida por el periodista Jordi Llompart
quien anteriormente realizó El misterio
del Nilo. Viaje mágico a África está
protagonizada por la actriz Leonor
Watling en el papel del Hada, Adrià
Collado y Verónica Blume, como los
padres de Jana, y los niños Eva Gerretsen
y Raymond Mvula.
L’Hemisfèric of the City of Arts and
Sciences in Valencia has added a new
production entitled Magic journey to Africa
to its programme. Last month, l’Hemisfèric
hosted the Spanish premiere of the
IMAX version of this film which combines
real images, mainly filmed in the African
deserts and savannas, with computer
generated images, achieving a unique
audiovisual atmosphere. L’ Hemisfèric
was inaugurated in 1998 and was the
first building of the City of Arts and
Sciences to open its doors to the public.
This spectacular building, designed by
Santiago Calatrava, has an egg-shaped
roof which is more than 100 metres in
length and which houses a huge area
used for screenings.
Magic journey to Africa, produced
by Orbita Max, tells the story of Jana,

young bushman child who she meets
on the streets of Barcelona, embarks on
an imaginary journey to the Namib
Desert, accompanied by her magical flying
horse. She is looking for answers to

El President de la Generalitat, Francisco
Camps, ha presentado el proyecto de recuperación
de la Vía Augusta en la Comunitat
Valenciana para revalorizar el trazado
original de esta calzada, que atraviesa
más de un centenar de términos municipales
y que permite conectar a 65
poblaciones a través de más de 600
kilómetros. Para desarrollar esta iniciativa
la Generalitat ha elaborado un plan
director para llevar a cabo la actuación
de recuperación y señalización del antiguo
trazado de la Vía Augusta en la
Comunitat Valenciana.
La Vía Augusta, cuyo trazado unía Roma
con Cádiz, constituyó el primer gran eje
vertebrador de la Península Ibérica.
Desde el punto de vista cultural es sin
duda uno de los grandes referentes de
la cultura romana en la Comunitat.
Además, está incluida en la lista
indicativa del Patrimonio Mundial y es
la calzada romana más larga de toda la
península ibérica, con un recorrido total
aproximado de mil quinientos kilómetros
desde los Pirineos hasta Cádiz.
La Vía Augusta fue la vía más
importante de comunicación y comercio
entre ciudades, provincias y puertos del
Mediterráneo y un elemento de
comunicación innovador que impulsó
el desarrollo económico, social y cultural
de nuestra tierra en la época romana.
Sin ella, el nacimiento de muchas de
nuestras ciudades y poblaciones como
Valentia (Valencia), Saguntum (Sagunto),
Lucentum (Alicante), Saetabis (Xàtiva)
o Ilici (Elche) no podría entenderse. La
Vía Augusta favoreció también el comercio,
el intercambio de mercancías, la llegada
de viajeros y las comunicaciones.
The President of the Regional Government,
Francisco Camps, has presented a recovery
project for the Via Augusta road in the
region of Valencia, aimed at adapting the
original route, which passes through
more than 100 municipalities and
connects 65 towns across more than
600 kilometres. To carry out this initiative,
the Regional Government has prepared
a plan to implement the recovery work
and improve the sign posting of the
former route of the Via Augusta in the
Region of Valencia.
The Via Augusta, which joined Rome
with Cadiz, was the first major road axis
of the Iberian Peninsula. From a cultural
point of view is it without doubt one of
the most significant vestiges of Roman
culture in the region.
Furthermore, it is included on the
indicative World Heritage list and it is the
longest Roman road in the whole of the
Iberian Peninsula with a total length of
approximately 1,500 kilometres from
the Pyrenees to Cadiz.
The Via Augusta was the most important
road for communication and trade between
the cities, provinces and ports of the
Mediterranean and an innovative
communication element which boosted
the economic, social and cultural
development of our land in the Roman
era.
Without it, the birth of many of our
cities and towns such as Valentia (Valencia),
Saguntum (Sagunto), Lucentum (Alicante),
Saetabis (Xàtiva) o Ilici (Elche) would be
unimaginable. The Via Augusta also
encouraged trade, the exchange of goods,
the arrival of travellers and communication

SEGUNDA BIBLIOPLAYA EN BENIDORM
SECOND BEACH LIBRARY IN BENIDORM
El punto de lectura de la playa de
Poniente de Benidorm ha entrado en
servicio el pasado mes de mayo. La
segunda biblioplaya ofrece en la capital
turística un espacio de lectura y
entretenimiento tanto para los residentes
como a los turistas. El punto de lectura
permanecerá abierto hasta el final del
verano con el fin de atender de forma
adecuada la demanda de los usuarios
durante los meses de mayor afluencia
de bañistas. La finalidad de este
proyecto es llevar la cultura a todos los
rincones de la ciudad, y las playas
son un lugar de encuentro y ocio para
miles de personas cada año.
La biblioplaya de Poniente, ubicada
en las inmediaciones del Club Náutico,
se suma a la instalada en la Playa de
Levante, que funciona durante todo el
año. Con esta nueva instalación se
pretende convertir litoral de Benidorm
en un espacio para la lectura durante
las cuatro estaciones del año, además
de ofrecer los mismos servicios en dos
de los lugares más turísticos y
emblemáticos de la ciudad.
Los puntos de lectura de las playas
de Benidorm son espacios abiertos,
amplios y diáfanos en los que los
usuarios pueden leer un libro o la
prensa a la sombra, bajo las coloridas
lonas instaladas en las playas más
populares de Europa, lo que permite
conjugar ocio y entretenimiento.
El segundo punto de lectura se ha
instalado en la playa de Poniente
merced a una reivindicación de los
usuarios de la zona.
The reading point on Poniente beach
in Benidorm began its service last
May. The second beach library in the
tourist capital provides a reading and
entertainment area for residents and
tourists alike. The reading point is
open until late summer so as to
adequately meet the demand from
users during the busiest months on the
beaches. The purpose of this project
is to bring culture to all corners of the
city, and the beaches function as a
meeting place and recreational area for
thousands of people every year.
This library on Poniente beach,
located near the Nautical Club,
complements the one which was already
in service on Levante beach, and which
operates throughout the year. With
this new facility, the aim is to convert
the coast of Benidorm into a reading
space for all four seasons of the year,
as well as providing the same services
in two of the most touristic and
emblematic places in the city.
The reading points on the beaches
of Benidorm are large, airy open spaces,
where users can read a book or the papers
in the shade of the colourful canvas
coverings located on Europe’s most
popular beaches, allowing for leisure and
entertainment to be combined.
The second reading point has been
installed on the Poniente beach at the
request of users in the area.

Medio Ambiente han constatado el inicio
de las nidificaciones de aves acuáticas
en el Parc Natural de l’Albufera. Se
trata de un hecho de gran relevancia ya
que l’Albufera es, tras Doñana y el Delta
del Ebro, el espacio natural con mayor
importancia de las nidificaciones en el
conjunto del estado. De hecho, en el Parc
Natural de l’Albufera llegan a nidificar
anualmente entre doce mil y quince
mil parejas de aves acuáticas.
Benidorm cuenta con un nuevo servicio
de préstamo de bicicletas cuya dotación
inicial es de diez bases y 300
bicicletas. Las bases se han instalado
en los paseos de Levante y Poniente, el
Rincón de L’Oix, la Avenida Europa, la
Plaza Torrejó y el Parque de Elche, así
como también en el entorno de edificios
públicos como el Ayuntamiento, el
Mercado, la Estación de Autobuses, la
Estación del TRAM y en zonas deportivas,
como Foietes y el Palacio de
Deportes L’Illa de Benidorm.

This is a very important event as l’Albufera

del Corpus Christi, incluye en la

La publicación hace referencia a todos

en la procesión del Corpus Christi

En la Guía de Rutas por Serra Gelada,
editada por el Ayuntamiento de Benidorm
se describen cinco interesantes rutas que
se pueden hacer en este parque natural
de la Comunitat Valenciana para descubrir
y conocer su fauna y flora. Punta del
Cavall, La Cruz, Travesía de la Serra
Gelada, Subida al repetidor y El Faro de
l’Albir son los recorridos sobre los que se
ofrece información referente a los kilómetros,
dificultad de la ruta, duración, desnivel
y accesibilidad, fotografía y una descripción
detallada que indica paso a paso la ruta.
La guía se ha distribuido en todas las oficinas
de turismo de Benidorm y la Costa Blanca,
así como en los hoteles de la ciudad.
The Serra Gelada Tour Guide, edited by
the Benidorm City Council, describes five
interesting routes to discover and get to
know the fauna and flora of this nature
park in the Region of Valencia. Punta
del Cavall, La Cruz, Crossing of the Serra
Gelada, the Repetidor Climb and the
l’Albir Lighthouse are the routes mentioned
including information about: the number
of kilometres, the difficulty level of the
route, the duration, incline and accessibility,
along with photography and a detailed stepby-step
description detailing each route.
The guide has been distributed in all of
the tourism offices in Benidorm and the
Costa Blanca, as well as in the hotels all

AJEDREZ VIVIENTE EN XÀBIA
HUMAN CHESS IN XÀBIA
Desde 2006 el Ajedrez Viviente de
Xàbia tiene lugar el último sábado
del mes de julio, a las diez y media
de la noche, en el puerto. La obra
se lleva a cabo con la presencia de
un narrador y de dos jugadores que
leen las jugadas de una partida ya
disputada. Los figurantes son niños
y niñas, de entre 6 y 14 años.
El Ajedrez Viviente en Xàbia
(declarada celebración de interé
turístico nacional) es un grupo de
teatro, cívico y sin ánimo de lucro,
creador de una nueva modalidad
escénica, singular y diferenciada,
que supone una nueva forma de
entender esta centenaria variedad
de ajedrez. En realidad, el espectador
asiste más a una obra teatral que
a la contemplación del desarrollo
de una partida que toma elementos
del teatro clásico.
Entre las obras representadas
destacan Una partida para la paz,
Jaume I y Al-Azraq, El último
neandertal de Cova Foradada, o la
adaptación para ajedrez viviente
teatral de Harry Potter y la piedra
filosofal. En 2009, la representación
fue Romeo y Julieta.
En cada edición participan
invitados ilustres como los ajedrecistas
Miguel Illescas, Quique Llobell y Julen
Arizmendi; el periodista Matías
Prats; el astronauta e hijo adoptivo
de la Villa de Xàbia, Pedro Duque;
el tenista Juan Carlos Ferrero; el
paleoantropólogo, codirector del
proyecto Atapuerca, Juan Luis
Arsuaga; el tenista, hijo predilecto
de Xàbia, David Ferrer; el ex jugador

Since 2006 Xàbia Human Chess has
taken place at the port on the last
Saturday of the month of July, at
10.30pm. The activity is performed
with a narrator and two players who
read out the moves made in a game
which has already been played.
The participants are girls and boys
between 6 and 14 years old.
Xàbia Human Chess is a public,
non-profit theatre group which has
created a new, unique and distinctive
approach to performing and
understanding this century-old
variety of chess. The spectator is
watching a true theatrical production
rather than observing a game which
simply borrows elements from
classical theatre.
Among the merit-worthy
productions are: Una partida para
la paz (A game for peace), Jaume
I and Al-Azraq, El último neandertal
de Cova Foradada (Al-Azraq, The last
Neanderthal of Cova Foradada), or
the adaptation for theatrical human
chess of Harry Potter and the
Philosopher’s Stone. In 2009, the
performance was Romeo and Juliet.
Special guests participate in
every production such as: the chess

CINEMA JOVE AND UPV PAY TRIBUTE TO JOANNA QUINN
La programación del Festival Internacional
de Cine Cinema Jove de Valencia se
completa con una muestra organizada
por la Universidad Politécnica que rinde
homenaje a la creadora de animación,
Joanna Quinn y que lleva por título Arte
VS. Animación.
La exposición, programada hasta el
27 de julio en la UPV, presenta una selección
de sus obras, analiza las fuentes
de su inspiración y sigue el proceso
que lleva de las ideas iniciales al resultado
final.
En una época en la que predomina
la animación por ordenador y el retoque
digital, la creadora inglesa Joanna Quinn
es una apasionada del dibujo que ha merecido
el reconocimiento internacional
con galardones y ciclos en los principales
foros del mundo.
Las películas de Joanna Quinn destacan
por una animación poderosa y
un trazo magistral del dibujo a mano alzada.
Sus guiones se caracterizan por
una aguda observación de la realidad,
que combinada con un fuerte sentido
de la comedia da como resultado obras
con un gran efecto de empatía con la
audiencia.
Su obra maestra, Britannia, constituye
una mordaz y brillante perspectiva
del fin del imperialismo británico. La
pieza ganó el prestigioso premio Leonardo
Da Vinci en 1993, que irónicamente, recibió
en el Palacio de Buckingham, de
manos del Príncipe de Gales. Dos de sus
películas, Famous Fred (1998) y The Wife
of Bath (1999), han recibido nominaciones
a los Oscar. En su vitrina de trofeos,
figuran varios Emmy, Bafta (los Oscar
ingleses) y premios del jurado de los más
importantes festivales de animación.

The Cinema Jove International Film
Festival of Valencia’s programme is
completed by an exhibition organised by
the Universidad Politécnica which pays
tribute to the animator Joanna Quinn,
entitled Arte VS. Animación (Art
VS. Animation).
The exhibition, scheduled to run

animation and digital retouching, the
British animator Joanna Quinn is

Joanna Quinn’s films are characterised
by powerful animation and a masterful
command of freehand drawing. Her
films are characterised by an acute
observation of reality, which, combined
with a strong sense of humour creates
works which achieve a great sense of
empathy among the audience.
Her masterpiece Britannia, is a
caustic and brilliant take on the end of
British imperialism. The work won the
prestigious Leonardo Da Vinci prize in
1993 which, ironically, was presented
to her in Buckingham Palace, by the Prince
of Wales. Two of her films, Famous Fred
(1998) and The Wife of Bath (1999),
have received Oscar nominations. In
her trophy cabinet there are several
Emmys, BAFTAS and jury prizes from
the most important animation festivals.
