LANDSCAPE ANALYSIS AND HABITAT FRAGMENTATION ON APLOMADO
FALCON (Falco femoralis septentrionalis) TERRITORIES IN CHIHUAHUA,
MÉXICO
This work is part of a studies carried out on an aplomado falcon (Falco
femoralis septentrionalis) found at Chihuahua state. The objective was to
analyze landscape characteristics and habitat fragmentation using satellite
images. The field work was conducted at two locations, Tinaja Verde and El
Sueco; at each location nesting and perch sites were identified. Satellite images
were processed using IDRISI 32 and Fragstats 2.0 softwares. Five vegetation
types were identified: natural grassland, savannah, halophytic grassland,
grassland-scrub, and scrub. The variables largest patch index, number of
patches, mean patch size, total edge, landscape shape index, juxtaposition,
fragmentation, and contagion index were analyzed. In order to detect plant cover
differences among locations and sites, a variance analysis was adjusted to a
one way statistical model; classificatory effects were location, site and
location*vegetation type interaction. At both locations, Tinaja Verde and El
Sueco, natural grassland was the main vegetation type for nesting, while scrub
was the main vegetation used for perching. Fragmentation was greater (P
