SOBRE EL AUTOR<br />
SHALOM AUSLANDER (Monsey, Nueva York, 1970- )<br />
Nació y creció en Monsey, en el seno <strong>de</strong> <strong>un</strong>a com<strong>un</strong>idad<br />
judía ortodoxa. Asistió a la Aca<strong>de</strong>mia Talmúdica Marsha<br />
Stern, en Manhattan. De juventud díscola y rebel<strong>de</strong>, pasó <strong>un</strong><br />
tiempo viviendo en Israel, enviado por sus padres para<br />
intentar “corregir sus múltiples <strong>de</strong>fectos y pecados”.<br />
El primer libro <strong>de</strong>l autor, la colección <strong>de</strong> relatos Beware of god: stories (2005),<br />
todavía inédito en castellano, le valió <strong>un</strong> gran reconocimiento crítico, al igual<br />
que <strong>Lamentaciones</strong> <strong>de</strong> <strong>un</strong> <strong>prepucio</strong>; reciente padre <strong>de</strong> familia, este libro parte<br />
<strong>de</strong> sus dudas sobre la <strong>de</strong>cisión <strong>de</strong> circ<strong>un</strong>cidar a su hijo, y sobre si educarle en<br />
las mismas creencias que él interiorizó; para ello hace recapitulación sobre lo<br />
que ha vivido y lo que espera para su hijo. Auslan<strong>de</strong>r escribe regularmente<br />
para The New Yorker, Esquire y The New York Times Magazine entre otras<br />
publicaciones. Vive en Woodstock, en el Estado <strong>de</strong> Nueva York.<br />

SOBRE LA OBRA<br />
Sinopsis <strong>de</strong> la editorial<br />
Vale, Dios no dice nada cuando Le hablan, as<strong>un</strong>to<br />
a partir <strong>de</strong>l cual se han escrito pliegos<br />
interminables, pero no por eso es menos vengativo<br />
y cruel. Lógicamente, el mayor conspirador <strong>de</strong> la<br />
historia actúa en silencio, y <strong>de</strong> Él no hay manera<br />
<strong>de</strong> escapar, como bien sabe cualquier paranoico<br />
<strong>de</strong> orientación pesimista (alguien que ha entendido<br />
la situación y no temería lo peor si no esperase<br />
algo mejor).<br />
Estamos hablando <strong>de</strong> Shalom Auslan<strong>de</strong>r, educado<br />
en la ortodoxia judía, <strong>de</strong> la cual se <strong>de</strong>svió primero<br />
a través <strong>de</strong> la pornografía y la comida no kosher, la<br />
marihuana, el hurto y la masturbación compulsiva,<br />
y luego a través <strong>de</strong> <strong>un</strong>a vida que podríamos llamar<br />
laica. Y que viene a ser lo mismo, porque el autor<br />
sigue creyendo –es <strong>de</strong>cir, temiendo– <strong>de</strong> modo «agobiante, incurable,<br />
miserable». Por eso, ahora que su hijo está por nacer, no sabe si hacerle cortar<br />
el <strong>prepucio</strong> según or<strong>de</strong>na la tradición o esperar algo peor que la muerte, <strong>un</strong>a<br />
tortura más lenta, dolorosa y, sobre todo, divertida a los ojos <strong>de</strong> Dios.<br />
Más allá <strong>de</strong> la anécdota, este memoir (pues no hay aquí más ficción que en la<br />
Biblia, a<strong>un</strong>que tanto castigo parezca mentira) da cuenta <strong>de</strong> <strong>un</strong>a rebelión<br />
inevitable y al mismo tiempo inútil. Estas <strong>Lamentaciones</strong> meditan, pues, sobre<br />
la i<strong>de</strong>ntidad. ¿Soberanía y sujeción a partes iguales? Nadie respon<strong>de</strong>.<br />
Crítica<br />
Podríamos enmarcar a Shalom Auslan<strong>de</strong>r <strong>de</strong>ntro <strong>de</strong> cierta tradición <strong>de</strong><br />
satiristas judíos, escritores que hablan <strong>de</strong> los traumas religiosos, familiares o<br />
sexuales <strong>de</strong> <strong>un</strong> judío <strong>de</strong>s<strong>de</strong> el humor y la sátira. De hecho, gran parte <strong>de</strong> la<br />
crítica ha comparado a Auslan<strong>de</strong>r con autores como el escritor Philip Roth, el<br />
también escritor y humorista David Sedaris, o el cineasta y autor Woody Allen.<br />
Su primer libro, Beware of god (Cuidado con Dios), es <strong>un</strong>a colección <strong>de</strong> relatos<br />
que también pivotan sobre la cuestión <strong>de</strong> la vida y la religión judía con gran<strong>de</strong>s<br />
dosis <strong>de</strong> humor y provocación.<br />
La obra que nos ocupa está inscrita en el género <strong>de</strong> memorias, es <strong>de</strong>cir, <strong>un</strong>a<br />
serie <strong>de</strong> recuerdos autobiográficos convenientemente novelados, con mucho<br />
<strong>de</strong> exageración e imaginación. El autor nos relata, con <strong>un</strong> estilo corrosivo,<br />

“herético”, lleno <strong>de</strong> impertinencias y blasfemias, su infancia en <strong>un</strong> barrio<br />
resi<strong>de</strong>ncial <strong>de</strong> Nueva York poblado por com<strong>un</strong>ida<strong>de</strong>s judías ortodoxas, con idas<br />
y venidas constantes a la sinagoga y a la yeshiva o escuela <strong>de</strong> estudio <strong>de</strong> la<br />
Torá y el Talmud (casi siempre exclusivas para hombres). El panorama <strong>de</strong>scrito<br />
no resulta <strong>de</strong>masiado alentador: rabinos enormes y terribles, <strong>un</strong> padre violento<br />
y bebedor, <strong>un</strong>a madre autocompasiva, <strong>un</strong>os hermanos <strong>un</strong> tanto idiotas, la<br />
obligación <strong>de</strong> comer únicamente comida kosher… y <strong>un</strong> Dios omnipresente al<br />
que hay que temer, vengativo y cruel, cuyo nombre ni siquiera es lícito<br />
pron<strong>un</strong>ciar.<br />
Teniendo en cuenta todo lo anterior, su adolescencia sólo podía estar marcada<br />
por la rebeldía: hurtos y robos, pornografía, marihuana, blasfemias, comida no<br />
kosher… Violando mandamientos simplemente por el placer <strong>de</strong> hacerlo. Todo<br />
ello le alejará <strong>de</strong> la observancia <strong>de</strong> la religión judía y afectará a sus lazos<br />
familiares. En la novela no falta su estancia en Israel. Es <strong>un</strong> periodo hilarante<br />
<strong>de</strong> la vida <strong>de</strong> Auslan<strong>de</strong>r en el que alcanza mayores cotas <strong>de</strong> libertad (y <strong>de</strong> THC<br />
en sangre), y enca<strong>de</strong>na fracaso tras fracaso sentimental. No encontraremos<br />
con<strong>de</strong>nas al sionismo, habituales en la izquierda judía norteamericana, más<br />
bien <strong>de</strong>claraciones como ésta: “Los israelíes vendían hierba, me dijeron, y los<br />
árabes hachís; me parecía que las esperanzas <strong>de</strong> Oriente Medio eran muy<br />
escasas si ni siquiera conseguían ponerse <strong>de</strong> acuerdo en cómo colocarse”.<br />
A<strong>un</strong>que cabría preg<strong>un</strong>tarse si ha <strong>de</strong>jado <strong>de</strong> ser creyente. Hay mucha literatura<br />
que afirma que renegar <strong>de</strong>l judaísmo es otra forma <strong>de</strong> ser judío. Por otra parte,<br />
hoy Shalom lleva <strong>un</strong>a vida convencional, <strong>de</strong> la que aparecen también<br />
pinceladas en el libro; está felizmente casado, tiene <strong>un</strong> hijo reciente, y éxito<br />
como escritor. Por cierto, su nombre, Shalom, significa “paz” en hebreo.<br />
miserablemente”.<br />
El autor reconoce seguir siendo creyente a<strong>un</strong><br />
resistiéndose con todas sus fuerzas. “No guardo el<br />
Sabbath ni rezo tres veces al día, ni espero seis horas<br />
para comer carne si he tomado leche. La gente que me<br />
crió dirá que no soy religioso. Se equivocan. Lo que no<br />
soy es practicante. Pero soy religioso <strong>de</strong> <strong>un</strong>a manera<br />
dolorosa, agobiante, incurable, miserable, y últimamente<br />
he observado, perplejo y consternado, que por todo el<br />
m<strong>un</strong>do hay cada vez más gente que parece estar<br />
encontrando Dioses, cada <strong>un</strong>o <strong>de</strong> ellos con más odio y<br />
más sediento <strong>de</strong> sangre que el siguiente, mientras yo<br />
hago todo lo que puedo para per<strong>de</strong>r el mío. Y fracaso<br />
Resulta curiosa esta aparente contradicción. Shalom propone otra forma <strong>de</strong><br />
enten<strong>de</strong>r la relación con Dios que no otorgue primacía a la religión sobre la<br />
vida, sino justo al revés. Le gustaría conce<strong>de</strong>r a Dios “el mérito <strong>de</strong> ser capaz <strong>de</strong><br />

aceptar <strong>un</strong>a cierta crítica <strong>de</strong> vez en cuando”. En este sentido también dice:<br />
“Ro<strong>de</strong>ado como estaba Dios por <strong>un</strong> <strong>un</strong>iverso <strong>de</strong> aduladores que sólo sabían<br />
<strong>de</strong>cir que sí, a lo mejor agra<strong>de</strong>cería <strong>un</strong> poco <strong>de</strong> interacción sincera”.<br />
Escribe Víctor Boglar: “<strong>Lamentaciones</strong> <strong>de</strong> <strong>un</strong> <strong>prepucio</strong> es la dolorosa, honesta y<br />
valiente crónica <strong>de</strong> la emancipación <strong>de</strong> <strong>un</strong> ser humano. Emancipación que,<br />
probablemente, conduzca a otras prisiones más o menos libremente elegidas,<br />
pero que ofrecen el consuelo <strong>de</strong> conce<strong>de</strong>r casi siempre régimen abierto”.<br />
En general, observando no sólo sus libros, sino también<br />
sus artículos y ensayos, Auslan<strong>de</strong>r tiene <strong>un</strong> perfil<br />
provocador, acompañado <strong>de</strong> <strong>un</strong>a prosa habitualmente<br />
malsonante. Los blancos <strong>de</strong> sus afiladas críticas e<br />
ironías se extien<strong>de</strong>n a casi todo el m<strong>un</strong>do. En <strong>un</strong> artículo<br />
que escribió en 2008 para el diario británico The<br />
Guardian, en el que reflexiona sobre el patriotismo<br />
americano, afirma haberse dado cuenta <strong>de</strong> que no odia<br />
ningún país ni sociedad concreta; lo que odia es la<br />
gente.<br />
¿Qué dicen los medios <strong>de</strong> com<strong>un</strong>icación sobre <strong>Lamentaciones</strong> <strong>de</strong> <strong>un</strong><br />
<strong>prepucio</strong>?<br />
“Divertido, feroz y subversivamente cordial… Escribir con este humor y amarga<br />
ironía sobre los temas más personales, con prof<strong>un</strong>das y reales consecuencias,<br />
no es tarea para <strong>un</strong> acólito, a<strong>un</strong>que muchos lo hayan intentado. Con su <strong>de</strong>do<br />
medio ap<strong>un</strong>tando a los cielos y <strong>un</strong>a mano posada sobre su corazón, Auslan<strong>de</strong>r<br />
