THE FINAL EXAM
The Gospel Parable of the
Last Judgment which we read on this
Solemnity of Christ the King offers us what I like to call the
“final exam” for our lives. As we celebrate this weekend
the 60 th Anniversary of St. Juliana Catholic School, we
rejoice all the good our Parish School has done in the past
six decades, and we recommit ourselves to supporting its
mission, in our new partnership with Holy Name of Jesus
Parish, for many years to come. The most important thing
our School has accomplished, the way its efficacy as an
apostolate of our local Church will be most accurately
measured, is in how it has prepared generations of young
people for this final exam.
There is a lot of debate in educational circles
about “teaching to the test,” and we are proud here at St.
Juliana that our focus is much more on teaching than on
standardized tests, even though our test results are
terrific. With regard to the final exam Jesus presents us,
however, “Whatever you did for one of these least
brothers of mine, you did to me,” we most definitely
want to “teach to the test.” The beauty is that it’s an
open-book test – we need but read the Scriptures, the
Tradition of the Church, the lives of the saints, and
hopefully the example of our teachers, parents, religious
and clergy, in order to learn how to pass the exam.
We commit ourselves today, in the work of St.
Juliana Catholic School and of all the ministries of St.
Juliana Parish, to serve and honor Christ the King and to
prepare ourselves and our young people to serve and
honor Him in His least brothers and sisters, and thus pass
the final exam.

EL EXAMEN FINAL
La Parábola del Juicio Final que leemos en esta
Solemnidad de Cristo Rey nos ofrece lo que me gusta llamar el
“examen final” para nuestras vidas. Al celebrar este fin de
semana el 60º Aniversario de la Escuela Católica Santa Juliana,
nos regocijamos por todo lo bueno que ha hecho nuestra
Escuela Parroquial en las últimas seis décadas. Nos
comprometemos a seguir apoyando en los años venideros la
misión de la escuela, en especial en nuestra nueva asociación
con la Parroquia de Holy Name of Jesus. Lo más importante
que ha logrado nuestra Escuela, la forma en la cual se medirá su
eficacia como apostolado de nuestra Iglesia local, es cómo ha
preparado a generaciones de jóvenes para este examen final.
Hay mucho debate en los círculos educacionales con
respecto a “enseñar para pasar el examen”. Aquí en Santa
Juliana, estamos orgullosos que nuestro enfoque está más
en la enseñanza que en los exámenes estandarizados,
aunque nuestros resultados en éstos son magníficos. Sin
embargo, con respecto al examen final que nos presenta
Jesús, “Cuando lo hicieron con el más insignificante de mis
hermanos, conmigo lo hicieron”, queremos sin duda enseñar
de una manera dirigida a este examen. Lo bueno es que es
un examen de libro abierto – solo necesitamos leer las
Escrituras, la Tradición de la Iglesia, las vidas de los santos,
confiando que el ejemplo de nuestros maestros, padres y
madres, religiosas y clero, nos enseñen cómo pasar el
examen.
Nos comprometemos hoy, en el trabajo de la Escuela
Católica Santa Juliana, y en todos los ministerios de la Parroquia
Santa Juliana, a servir y honrar a Cristo Rey y prepararnos
nosotros y nuestros jóvenes a servirlo y honrarlo en “los más
insignificantes de sus hermanos”, y así pasar el examen final.

begin collecting non-perishable foods for the
Thanksgiving dinners offered every year on Thanksgiving
week for the needy families of the parish, as well as cash.

Although the Church understands that
certain circumstances and preferences
may exist for individuals or relatives to
seek cremation, she maintains as a first preference the funeral
rites with the body present and its immediate burial in a
cemetery. Catholics may choose cremation, provided it in no
way expresses a denial of the Catholic teaching of the dignity
