HOW TO VOTE
I have heard comments in
recent weeks from parishioners
uncomfortable with some of the materials our Bishop or the
Florida Catholic Conference have asked us to put out with
regard to the upcoming national and state elections. An
important clarification needs to be made. The Catholic
Church tells no one for whom to vote, but the Church does
tell us how to vote. The Church presents, in such
documents as the US Bishops’ Forming Consciences for
Faithful Citizenship, the principals that should guide our
consciences in voting. The whole document can be seen at
the USCCB’s website, but it clearly calls Catholics to look at
a whole gamut of moral issues in deciding for whom to
vote, bearing in mind that protecting innocent human life
(that is, opposition to abortion and euthanasia), protecting
religious liberty and defending the meaning of marriage
have to take first place.
The list of points to be considered certainly
includes, as all Catholics should be well aware, the need to
protect the rights and the dignity of immigrants, while
recognizing the right of our country to regulate
immigration. As a Church that has always been a Church
of immigrants and that knows too well that xenophobia
and anti-Catholicism have gone hand in hand in American
history, we need to call all parties to a politics of welcome
and justice. That said, nothing can trump the defense of
innocent human life, so gravely under attack in our
society.
Religious liberty has certainly come to the fore as
a key issue this year as well, due in large part to the HHS
contraceptive mandate, but there are many other
challenges as well. We have seen the effects of anti-
Catholicism in many countries in our hemisphere and
around the world, as shown in Andy García’s recent movie
For Greater Glory. We must do whatever we can to fight
for religious freedom in the USA.
The Florida Bishops, in particular, have asked us to
support amendments 6 and 8 to the Florida Constitution.
Amendment 6 would allow the Legislature to pass laws to
defend the rights of parents to take part in the decision of
their daughters with regard to abortion and would
prohibit the use of tax dollars for abortion. Amendment 8
would protect religious freedom, ensuring that religious
organizations and individuals would have an equal and just
place in the public square.

CÓMO VOTAR
He oído comentarios en las últimas semanas de
feligreses incómodos con algunos de los materiales que
nuestro Obispo o la Conferencia Católica de la Florida nos
han pedido que publiquemos con respecto a las elecciones
nacionales y estatales que están al celebrarse. Es
importante una clarificación. La Iglesia Católica no le dice a
nadie por quién votar, pero sí nos dice cómo votar. La
Iglesia nos presenta en documentos como Formando las
Consciencias para Ser Ciudadanos Fieles, los principio que
deberían de guiar nuestras consciencias al votar. Se puede
ver el documento entero en el portal de la USCCB (Obispos
de los EE. UU.) pero claramente llama a los católicos a
considerar muchos temas morales al decidir por quién
votar, teniendo en cuenta que la protección de la vida
humana inocente (es decir, la oposición al aborto y la
eutanasia), la protección de la libertad religiosa y la defensa
del matrimonio tiene que tomar primer lugar.
La lista de puntos por considerar sin duda incluye,
como deben saber todos los católicos, la necesidad de
proteger los derechos y la dignidad de los inmigrantes,
reconociendo a la vez el derecho de nuestro país de regular
la inmigración. Como una Iglesia que ha sido siempre una
Iglesia inmigrante y sabe demasiado bien que la xenofobia y
el anti-catolicismo han estado en liga en la historia
norteamericana, debemos llamar a todos los partidos a una
política de acogida y justicia. A la misma vez, nada puede
robarle importancia a la defensa de la vida humana
indefensa, tan atacada en nuestra sociedad.
La libertad religiosa ha tomado un lugar importante
como tema clave este año, en gran parte a causa del
mandato de anticonceptivos del Departamento de Salud,
pero hay otros retos. Hemos visto los efectos del anticatolicismo
en muchos países en nuestro hemisferio y en
todo el mundo, como mostrado en la película de Andy
García, Cristiada. Debemos hacer todo lo posible para
luchar por la libertad religiosa en EE.UU.
Los Obispos de la Florida, en particular, nos han
pedido que apoyemos las propuestas de enmienda a la
Constitución Estatal nn. 6 y 8. La n. 6 permitiría a la
Legislatura a pasar leyes para defender los derechos de los
padres a tomar parte en las decisiones de sus hijas con
respecto al aborto y prohibiría el uso de los impuestos
estatales para el aborto. La n. 8 protegería la libertad
religiosa, asegurando que las organizaciones y los individuos
tengan un lugar igual y justo en la plaza pública.

O God our Creator, from your provident hand we have
received our right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of
happiness.
You have called us as your people and given us the right and
the duty to worship you, the only true God, and your Son,
Jesus Christ.
Through the power and working of your Holy Spirit, you
call us to live out our faith in the midst of the world,
bringing the light and the saving truth of the Gospel to every
corner of society.
We ask you to bless us in our vigilance for the gift of
religious liberty.
Give us the strength of mind and heart to readily defend our
freedoms when they are threatened;
give us courage in making our voices heard on behalf of the
rights of your Church and the freedom of conscience of all
people of faith.
Grant, we pray, O heavenly Father, a clear and united voice
to all your sons and daughters gathered in your Church
in this decisive hour in the history of our nation, so that,
with every trial withstood and every danger overcome—for
the sake of our children, our grandchildren, and all who
come after us—this great land will always be “one nation,
under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”
We ask this through Christ Our Lord. Amen.

Friday, November 2 nd , is All Souls Day. There will be Masses

The Novena of Masses for All Souls will begin in our parish on
Friday, November 2 nd ; at the 8:30 a.m. Mass. Offering
envelopes for the Novena are available in the pack of
envelopes that you receive at home or in the vestibule of the
Church.
November is the month of prayer for our deceased loved ones.

FIRST FRIDAY!
On First Friday, November 2 nd , besides the 6:30 and 8:30
a.m. Masses, we will have a 12:00 noon bilingual Mass to
Honor the Sacred Heart of Jesus, followed by Exposition of
the Blessed Sacrament until Benediction at 6:10 p.m. All

El viernes, 2 de noviembre, es la Conmemoración de Todos los Fieles
Difuntos. Habrá Misas en inglés a las 6:30, 8:30 a.m., a las 12 del
meridiano, y en español a las 8:00 p.m.
El novenario de los Fieles Difuntos comenzará con la Misa de 8:30
a.m. Los sobres para la ofrenda se encuentran con los sobres que
recibe mensualmente en su hogar, o también en el vestíbulo de la

Out 8 th grade students will be running the annual Halloween Carnival at St. Juliana Catholic School on October 31 st . This fundraiser
will cover the cost for the Class of 2013 graduation trip to Islands of Adventure in May. Mrs. Giraud, Mrs. Basinski, and the 8 th grade
students would like to thank all our students and parents for supporting this fun event!
