FESTIVAL OF
Lanterns
By: Valinda Valdez Director of International Projects
and College Counselor
On Sunday, February 20, 2011 Saint George School participated in the Festival of Lanterns in the Barrio Chino
of Santo Domingo, as the Chinese community celebrated its New Year, dedicated to the Rabbit. Mrs. Rosa Ng,
President of the Instituto Cultural Chino and Fundación Flor para Todos, invited the school to participate in
this celebration once she was informed that Mandarin was being taught at school beginning in the 3 rd grade
and the enthusiasm the students have shown as they learn a new language and great historical culture of the Chinese. Students
from 3 rd - 7 th grade prepared paper lanterns and decorative signs with messages in mandarin during their Art class,
which were hung on lamp posts and trees throughout the Chinese community.
In addition, a group of 6 th and 7 th grade students were part of the official program as they sang a song in Mandarin, led
by their teachers Anita Tsai and Megan Tien delighting everyone present.
Once again, St. George School has demonstrated its commitment to the international community and as an international
school respects and learns from the traditions and cultures of its students and families. I would personally like to thank all
members of the SGS community who supported this activity in one way or another, the High School students Emil Pappaterra,
Juan Antonio Valdez, Arianna Moccia and Marjorie Llosa who gave up their Sunday morning to help decorate the street,
and especially all those who joined us on Sunday to enjoy a fascinating cultural experience during the Festival of Lanterns.
