I went through all of our editions of the Agora
magazine… reminiscing on how much we have grown
as a school and how many wonderful students and
families have been able to form part of the Saint
George School family. When you become Saint George,
you become a Dragon… not only during your years at
school but throughout your life. I had the wonderful
opportunity to have a few words with many of our
alumni this school year and there was a common
denominator as I asked them what they remember the
most from their years at Saint George: sense of family,
belonging and values… and it is precisely this that keeps
them coming to school, becoming a staff member, or a
school parent… or just coming by as a visitor and giving
a warm hug to their former teachers.
We dedicate this edition of the Agora magazine to our
alumni and their amazing contributions to our society.
We are proud to see young men and women who once
wondered our hallways moving towards creating a
better country, a better world. We are amazed at how
our alumni have taken their knowledge to industries,
hospitals, court rooms, advertisement, science labs and
as altruistic as it may sound… our dragons are changing
the world we live in.
In a few weeks, 55 Dragons will step into the real
world... and we know for a fact that their voices will be
heard , and their firm steps will be revolutionary. We
are Saint George School Dragons today and tomorrow.
Enjoy this amazing edition of our magazine and have a
well deserved Summer break.
Graduations have always been bittersweet affairs
for me. My firsthand experience with these emotions
was my own high school graduation (not that many
years ago!): ah!, the excitement of a new beginning, of
feeling all grown-up and “free” of teachers and parents
watching each of my steps; but oh!, the sadness of
parting with my friends, most of whom had been by
my side ever since pre-kinder. And then there was no
email or Skype to keep in touch!
I guess what I felt then is similar to what our Senior
class members must be feeling now as they approach
the final days of their last school year. Yet allow me
to reassure you all that the friends you have made in
school will forever be there for you, no matter how
far apart you are or how much time goes by without
seeing each other, or how many new friends you make.
They are an extension of your family, and family is
always by your side no matter the circumstances.
Your parents and we at school have to see you move
on, and a pang of sadness invades us... we have
nurtured you, been by your side every step of the
way, and letting go is not easy. Yet we are confident
that you are prepared to go out into the world and
experience new challenges, new responsibilities, new
emotions. I am sure you will make us proud wherever
you may go.
Recientemente el Ministerio
de Educación Superior Ciencia
y Tecnología decretó el
reconocimiento del Programa IB
en la República Dominicana. La
Resolución 29-2012 reconfirma y
valora lo que desde 1995 nuestra
institución ha estado promulgando
con el Programa IB.
Ideado como un programa de
educación mundial con un enfoque
holístico para la preparación
integral del estudiante, el programa
IB es reconocido y aceptado
mundialmente por las mejores
universidades del mundo. Es por
esta razón que la resolución del
MESCyT es la culminación de
una ardua labor que el Colegio
Saint George y el Bachillerato
Internacional llevaron a fruición con
la más alta instancia educativa de
nuestro país.
¿Cuál es el resultado o beneficio
para los estudiantes que cursen
el programa IB? Que el decreto
del MESCyT abre las puertas
para que las universidades
dominicanas reciban estudiantes
que han cursado el Programa
IB en nuestra institución o en
otras instituciones IB fuera de la
4 / AGORA
por Anton Tejeda,
Presidente SGS
República Dominicana, y que estos
reciban crédito universitario por
las asignaturas IB cursadas. No
todos los estudiantes IB recibirán
crédito universitario, ya que esto
depende de varios factores como
la calificación obtenida por el
estudiante y los criterios internos
de cada universidad. Ahora bien,
la mayoría de las universidades
de calidad reconocen el esfuerzo
que el estudiante hace al
comprometerse al Programa IB, y
ciertamente dan gran valor a esto
durante el proceso de evaluación
de potenciales estudiantes a sus
programas.
Cabe destacar que las notas
que reciben los estudiantes del
Programa IB son el resultado de
una estricta rúbrica de evaluación
de parte del profesorado del
Saint George como también
de profesores del IB a nivel
internacional, lo que garantiza
igualdad entre todos los estudiantes
del mundo IB. Es decir, un
estudiante que recibe un 6 en una
asignatura IB en Saint George tiene
las mismas condiciones que un
estudiante que haya recibido
un 6 en la misma asignatura en
Shanghai, China. Es esta garantía de
objetividad y calidad de criterio que
da al Programa IB su muy merecida
reputación de ser un programa
altamente demandante y de
probada excelencia académica.
Por lo tanto, no solo recibe el
estudiante una educación de
calidad mundial, sino que también,
dependiendo de su desempeño
personal, recibirá la posibilidad de
obtener créditos universitarios que
en casos excepcionales pudiera
significar un ahorro de hasta
un año completo de educación
universitaria, casos que ya hemos
tenido con alumnos nuestros en
universidades extranjeras. Esto se
traduce en un ahorro financiero
importante para cualquier familia
preparándose para enfrentar
los gastos de una educación
universitaria de primer nivel.
It is very common these days to hear people
complaining about “lost values”, and criticizing the
behavior of the young; especially those generations
past. It is undeniable that many changes in “acceptable”
behavior have taken place in the last decades. Often
you will hear narratives about how things “used to
be” in the past and how children respected more,
valued more, worked more, etc.
Truth of the matter is that we do need to teach our
children as soon as they are born how to behave
appropriately and prepare them for the future. Human
beings nowadays are trying to make their lives simpler,
but what they are really achieving is more complication
and stress. As trend has it, we now need life coaches
to help us understand, accept, and live our lives
successfully. Personally, I think the answer is…going
BACK TO BASICS.
As soon as an individual is born to a family, regardless
of their culture, ethnicity, or composition, all it needs
is security, limits, rules, nurture, lots of love…and above
all a good example.
A human being is the combination of genes,
environment, and social interactions. Personalities are
formed and determined during the first years of life
and that is why we need to teach values during their
early childhood.
Values are basically the moral rules that determine
our behavior within a culture or society. For a young
mind these are abstract concepts difficult to grasp
and comprehend. Hence the importance of a good
example and modeling appropriate behavior.
During the early stages, we can focus on five
basic values that will surely spread and derive to
higher definitions and reach in the future: honesty,
responsibility, perseverance, and love…BASICS.
Always teach children to tell the truth regardless
of any outcome. If they get in trouble, as they will,
give them time to narrate their side of the story
and allow them to tell the truth. Also, let them
be honest to themselves and to others; let them
express their ideas, as silly as they may be, and accept
their opinions with respect.
Children need to be responsible for their actions,
regardless of their age. We need to promote increasing
responsibility in our children by letting them solve
problems and perform tasks on their own.
Their short attention span allows children to shift
from one activity to another without regrets or
second thoughts. It is our duty to help them persist
in a task until its fully done, allowing them to feel the
satisfaction of a job well done and praising their effort.
Love is the most important value of all, and the
easiest to teach. Love is what should move our actions
every day and determine our relationship with our
environment. We need to teach young children to love
and love to their fullest; love their families, friends,
schools, home, planet, and further on. If a child grows
in a loving and nurturing home he/she will surely
learn to put his feelings aside for others, leading into
consideration, respect, understanding and a better
world for generations to come.
When children are taught these basic values through
example and everyday experiences they will surely
turn into honest, responsible human beings that
will persevere in a fight for the prevailing of love
amongst all people.
Life studying abroad is the best
academic and life formation I’ve
had. All teenagers should have
the opportunity of having this
experience. It is a big step away
from our comfort zone that can be
easily managed with daily advice
from our parents. Some will find
it tedious to grow up so rapidly
in this environment; I did so at
first as well. Yet with the help and
support of my parents, as well as
putting in an effort to embracing
the new at my current university,
Hult International Business School,
I adapted sooner than I thought I
could.
The academic formation I received
at Saint George School has had an
immense role in my life at Hult. Not
only because of the International
Baccalaureate Diploma, which gave
me enough credits to advance more
than half of my freshman year, but
because of the knowledge and
values that my teachers at Saint
George taught me. I especially
thank these teachers, for these
values have been the ones that hold
me strong nowadays.
by Vannesa Morel ’11
The location of my university,
London, is a dream city where
I have something to do every
single day. From the 300 plays
and museums to the 20 different
markets, the cultural awareness that
all this has given me is immense.
Indeed, the United Kingdom
fulfilled all my expectations of what
I was looking for in life studying
abroad. The cultural difference
between the vivid Dominican and
Colombian Cultures, compared
to the Conservative lifestyle
of the British, has given me the
opportunity of finding the charm
allocated in the heart of this new
culture I am embracing.
With no doubt I am very
enthusiastic of my current life
abroad from the Dominican
Republic. My only and best advice
to my fellow Dragons of Saint
George is: Don’t be scared of going
far, you all have the potential to
have this experience!
Theory of Knowledge and
History Teacher
At Saint George, we ask a lot of our students. In
school, we ask our students to be in command of their
own academic domain, their own commitments and
responsibilities, to uphold high standards, and to hold
themselves accountable to meet the expectations
of a Saint George student in good standing. Given
the totality of what we demand, it is a tremendous
accomplishment to achieve this standard, but this is
also the baseline expectation and minimum standard
we hold for all our students. On some level, all of our
students struggle with this load. Yet, even with the
rigor of our program, some of our students demand
even more of themselves. A student, for me, who
stands out amongst his peers is Michael Landestoy,
who is graduating this year with the Galia promotion
class of 2013.
Even though it is not his nature to seek the limelight,
Michael has taken a path to graduation that deserves
to be appreciated by us all, as exceptional and
inspirational, especially for those of us who understand
the difficulty of everything this young man has
accomplished.
Of Michael’s 50-plus peers in his Galia promotion, only
15 had the academic fortitude and stamina to tackle
the full IB Diploma, rather than certificates, in addition
to this country’s full national diploma. As a fully
bilingual, double-curriculum program, our students
juggle over 12 courses per semester, in two “native”
languages of English and Spanish, in addition to French.
For the full IB Diploma, this means a full year of college
level courses, in addition to the national requirements
for the Dominican diploma. The IB academic program
alone is incredibly onerous for those that focus on this
exclusively.
Add to the mix of Michael’s life, his role within his
promotion as an active peer, friend, and cheerleader
for all events, willing to role up his
sleeves to help out for Field Day,
sporting events, or any fundraiser,
an ubiquitous leader within the
background of any group activity.
Where there is Galia, you will find
Michael.
Add to the mix of Michael’s life, his
role as Secretary-General of the
Model United Nations club, the
largest club of any kind at Saint
George. Model U.N. requires its
participants to be up to date on all
of the global connections between
today’s current events, linking the
relationships between all countries
and regions with the implications
for geo-political balance of power.
As a leader, Michael must help bring
newer members into a culture of
global understanding that requires
students to be more fundamentally
aware of all things going on in the
world around us. As Secretary-
General, Michael has helped lead
the program to one of the most
stellar years of recognition in the
regional programs the SGS MUN
club has ever participated in: Buenos
Aires, the Caribbean conference,
and in the spring conference in New
York. This activity, by itself, can be
all-consuming, but Michael marches
on.
Ad to the mix of Michael’s life,
his desire to follow his own
passion for baseball like his father,
Rafael Landestoy, a professional
in the major leagues and lifetime
“Liceista”. Self-control, hard work,
attention to detail, commitment,
self-discipline, are all words to
describe the key ingredients of
success for any aspiring professional
athlete. To reach professional
status in no accident: Michael has
endeavored to meet the challenges
of practice, training and games
in the Dominican Republic’s
elite youth baseball programs,
to maintain his dream of playing
professional ball someday. Yet,
most individuals who make it to
the highest levels of sports must
sacrifice other elements of their
lives to keep the necessary focus to
make their dreams possible. Michael
still keeps professional baseball as
his focus, without allowing himself
to forego his other commitments:
he demands of himself to find
room to pursue it all. How is this
possible?
1. Michael as Secretary
General for SGSMUN.
2. Michael at the Galia
Fashion Show. 3. Michael
Landestoy with Juan Ramos.
AGORA / 9
A foundation of Michael’s success can also be linked
to his faith as a Christian that fits within his family’s
values and from which he finds inspiration and
strength. Passion, faith, integrity, and ambition for
excellence for its own sake form the core of this
young man. Michael’s unique combination of measured
temperament with intensity provides him a style of
leadership that quickly brings others on board by his
example. He is confident in his foundation and from
that steady base he has accomplished in many areas
what few of us have ever considered in even one area.
When a young man or woman naturally gravitates to
the greatest challenges, does not flinch in the face of
pressure, and finds success, this is the sign of a natural
born leader.
Michael’s unique capabilities at his young age have
much to do with his foundation firmly rooted within
his Christian faith in the household from which much
of his emotional strength stems, and Michael’s own
ambitions to walk the line between the most rigorous
high school academic program in this country and his
own pursuit of baseball at the highest level. By virtue
of his level of involvements and the successes found in
each, Michael is inherently a role model for young and
old alike. You might know of Michael in the context
of one or two of these activities, but to grasp the
immensity of his perseverance and accomplishment is
to understand the complexity of all he has achieved
simultaneously. Through it all, Michael keeps a modest
profile, but we know better, and take pride in knowing
that our collective future looks brighter with the next
generation of leaders made in the mold of Michael
Landestoy.
Back in December 2012, the opportunity came to
me to return to my homeland, to go back to a place
that has seen me grow on quite a regular basis for more
than 15 years of my life, the city of Havana, Cuba.
Having frequently visited and grown within a country
that has counted with such a diverse yet isolated
culture for such an extended period of time has not
only been a matter of vacation and traveling, for my
experiences in this environment have gone on to form
a part of my identity, of who I am. I have been actively
participating in diplomatic events and conferences
organized by the Consulate of Cuba in the Dominican
Republic for the past 3 years, with the aim and hope of
being able to lead an entirely new generation of young
compatriots of mine to join efforts and enthusiasm
by Christian Martínez,
5th Form Student
in order to not only inspire much desired motivation
and structural changes within my country, but to also
promote the values, ethics, and discipline that have
made Cuba a worldwide reference when it comes
to areas such as education, public health, and human
development.
The average monthly wage in Cuba is twenty US
dollars. The country’s current leadership is comprised
almost exclusively of elderly men, many in their 70’s
and 80’s. Against this setback, the government is
trying to find a way to connect with the youthful
population and ensure the long-term viability of the
ideals introduced by Fidel Castro back in 1959. Being
part of a select group of high school students of the
AGORA / 11
Cuban Youth Leaders living Abroad Organization
(Organización de Jóvenes Líderes Cubanos en el
Exterior), sponsored by the government and initiated
by its embassy in Santo Domingo, has not only
allowed me to expand my academic horizons and
knowledge regarding the socio-economic changes that
Cuba is experimenting, but it has also given me the
opportunity to voice my own perspective and opinions
regarding what can be modified and adjusted within
Cuba’s ageing political structure and share them with
important state politicians willing to take our ideas
into account. Being able to be present and elaborate
my ideas within the Cuban Parliament was another
unique yet overwhelming experience that I would most
definitely cherish repeating. Our mission would also
rely on conferring and improving our country’s global
image back in the respective places where we reside,
the Dominican Republic being my own case of course.
Perhaps the most emotive moment of them all was
being able to have a personal and much anticipated
conversation with Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, Cuba’s
Minister of Foreign Affairs, and having the time to
explain my cultural background, where I came from
and why I was there, in representation of a minor yet
12 / AGORA
strong group of Cuban adolescents living abroad while
the days of my winter break period were running by.
Sacrificing rest, holidays, and family time demonstrates
the passion with which I deal with these sort of
causes and events. I view being part of this Youth
Leadership organization group as an authentic display
of perseverance and faith in where I come from, as
despite not being able to currently live where my
true origins lie, I still believe in our abilities as young
contemporaries to contribute ideas, opinions, and
experiences that may lead the path to a brighter
forthcoming for nearly 10 million people, or even
more.
by Carmen Minaya ’91,
Head of Community Relations
These type of initiatives arise from the deep pride we
have in our country, as is my case with Cuba, but it is
also important to recall how we as an arising group
of youngsters must care for the welfare of where
we come from. We as contemporaries are unable to
change humanity’s failures, conflicts, and wars of the
past, yet I was blessed with the opportunity to play
a part in constructing my country’s future, and I will
most certainly continue to do so while I can. Since the beginning of every school year our department, along
with the Physical Education Department take part in a fun research of
activities and innovations for our annual Field Day: our goal… a fun day of
nonstop action and creative ideas to be enjoyed by each single member of
the SGS community. Although the Field Day has been around for 36 years
now …for the past eleven years we have had a very strong and energetic
at Saint George School. As usual, the month of May
is full of students preparing for IB exams, planning
graduation activities, and looking forward to another
summer vacation. But seniors are struggling with an
enormous decision which has both social and academic
implications for their future.
So Seniors… after a year or more of working and
worrying, it’s done: you’ve received word from all
the colleges to which you applied. All that remains in
your college quest is making the final decision. Which
college will you attend? So how does one make this
choice? This is a big decision. You are getting ready to
decide where you are going to be living for the next
four years of your life. You are leaving home for the
first time and even though you will come back from
time to time; when you go away to college, that in fact
Projects and College Counselor
will be your home. It is a big decision that requires a
lot of thought. The first is to go back and revisit the
webpages of each university. Then, make sure you sit
down and talk with your parents and counselor again.
You should go back and have another conversation
with that person and then if there is some one or two
people on the outside, a family, relative, a neighbor,
another teacher, who you really trust, go back and sit
down and talk to them. Tell them, I have got these five
choices. Here are the things that are most important
to me. Right now, I am leaning towards this school for
these reasons; tell me, what you think? So, get that
Business) with Valinda Valdez.
outside input from people who you know, people whom you trust, and people who you know love you and have
your best interest. But I believe most importantly, trust your instincts! College is a big investment of time and
money and how you feel about it counts a great deal. If you have two or more choices, it may be wise to go with
the one that just feels right for you.
Now it is my turn to say goodbye to the graduating class of 2013. As many of you know, this class is very special
to me as one of its members is my dearest nephew Juan Antonio Valdez. For 15 years I have had him by my side
at school, guiding him along the way. Now it is his turn to apply all he has learned and make a future for himself.
Juan Antonio… I will always be there urging you on, helping you overcome obstacles, and applauding your
achievements. And to all of Galia ‘13, I leave you with these words…
This is just the end of the beginning for you. I’ll expect that you should meet with any challenges that come before you
with dignity, pride and much success. The potential is there - use it! Parents, teachers and administrators have invested
much love, time and energy in you. All we want in return is your happiness and success. You never get a second chance
to make a good first impression. Whatever choices you make in life, you have to be well-prepared for it and do it right
the first time. And finally…Graduation is just the start for what’s coming next. You have many roads to encounter. You
will choose the path best for you. You have made your mark on your high school... I’m sure you will make your mark on
other institutions and people in your life.
God bless you all
6th From Students
On March 21st 2013, thirteen members of the Saint George School
Model United Nations left for New York City to participate in the New
York Dominican Republic Model United Nations Conference (NYDRMUN
2013) at the Hilton Hotel New York Conference Center. As seniors, we
were enthusiastic and anxious knowing this would be our last conference
with the SGSMUN.
Once the students stepped on to the plane, they became delegates;
capable of debating any topic on the international agenda of the United
Nations ready to represent the countries of France and Perú. We
discussed topics such as the situation in Syria, domestic employer’s health,
and the elimination of discrimination against women. Our experience as
delegates concluded where every MUN Delegate wishes to be, standing
at the podium of the General Assembly at the United Nations. As a result
of their hard work and dedication, three of our delegates were given the
opportunity to address the audience from the podium.
NYDRMUN 2013 was a conference that fulfilled our expectations not
only in the academic aspect, but rather helped us act as a group, and
develop a friendship that we know will never be broken. As seniors, we
know that our past years as MUN delegates has prepared us to face our
next challenge, be tolerant, negotiate, be aware of
the problems we face as global citizens and look for
peaceful ways to solve them.
The Saint George Model United Nations Delegations
for NYDRMUN were represented by the following
students: Nicole Coiscou, Luiz De Mello, Mary Liang,
Christian Martínez, Maite Mejía, Jessica Muñoz, Farah
This year the students of Middle School offered
their talents and knowledge of Mandarin to celebrate
the Chinese New Year.
The presentation began with the thundering drumbeat
of Jonathan Wang and 5th Prep Pedro Mir students
performing a traditional Lion Dance which is believed
to scare away evil and bad luck in order to welcome
the new year with good fortune. They had made the
Lion Costumes using brilliant colors that mesmerized
the audience at the special assembly.
Then 5th Longfellow reenacted the story of how the
twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac were chosen.
Finally, the chorus of 5th graders sang the new year’s
poem “Yuan Ri” which described the scenery of New
Year’s day with the sound of firecrackers bidding
farewell to the old year and the arrival of the spring
breeze that brings joy and hope to people’s hearts.
1st and 2nd Form students practiced their Chinese
calligraphy and constructed a giant lantern to
decorate the stage.
This year 2013 is the year of the snake, so in honor
of the 6th Prep students who were born in the year
of the snake during the previous zodiac cycle, all of
Middle School students constructed a giant origami
snake out of more than two thousand pieces of
folded paper. They took time during recess, they
made them at home and put the pieces together in
Art Class to create a 3D snake sculpture.
We congratulate the students of Middle School
on their efforts to learn Mandarin and to help us
increase our cultural awareness.
“The Great Poetry Race” is a
reading activity that takes place
among the Primary School students
as part of my Library Skills Class. It
is very simple and the children love
it!
I introduce the poems and give the
students guidelines about how they
should be read. Then, they receive
a copy of the poem and a form that
includes directions as well as a place
for signatures.
In a week, they read the poem to as
many people as possible in school
and at home. After the students
read the poem, each person had to
sign a form and make a comment.
The students with the most
signatures win the race.
Three winners are chosen from
each class: 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places.
They receive certificates as a prize.
This activity has been so effective
and highly competitive due to
the children´s enthusiasm, that
honorable mentions have also been
granted to children who could not
make it to the top places.
The Great Poetry Race has become
a very popular activity, here at
Saint George. We carry it out on a
yearly basis. This is our third event,
and the eagerness displayed by the
students not only has increased
through the years, but it is also
highly commendable!
This activity actually culminates
when the winners present a
the outstanding performances
presented by the winners.
Saint George School is filled
with students of many talents.
We have excellent writers,
amazing singers, students who
can give profound and eloquent
speeches, not to mention our
athletes, dancers, gymnasts and
young engineers. We have it all.
There is a talent that lives within
some of our students, more
than a talent… a way of life. It is
observed in every action, in the
simplest of expressions… and it
is then when we find students
who are the vivid example of
kindness, dedication, citizenship,
compassion… all together, an ever
flowing river of virtues.
Yan Diego and Maya Wilson
are both very talented artists.
Since their first year at Saint
by Carmen Minaya ’91,
Head of Community Relations
George we were able to enjoy
their wide talents in theater and
performing during school plays and
presentations. Added to their talent
on stage they maintain very high
averages which come to prove that
their discipline and determination
does not only live on stage but
within them. To list their many
performances which include main
parts in performances at “Teatro
Nacional” and working under the
direction of the most famous
play writers of the country would
require a long time. These students
have already more theatrical
experience than many adults in that
field. Added to this, both of them
voluntarily take part in activities
of social awareness and are able to
excel in absolutely every activity
they engage in… just saying that
students of this caliber makes us
proud is an understatement.
Our student Yan Diego Wilson has
won the merit scholarship that will
pay more than half his schooling at
the Walnut Hill School for the Arts
in Natick, Massachusetts in hopes
that someday he will become the
next John Lasseter of Pixar films,
making the best animated films
of our day. Maya has earned a full
merit scholarship to attend the
Portsmouth Abbey School in Rhode
Island; she hopes someday to be on
Broadway for musical theater and
write novels. These amazing news
for both these students makes us
aware of how fortunate we were
to have these young scholars at
Saint George who move now to
spread their knowledge and talent
to others.
Yan Diego and Maya, thank you
for having made your years at
Saint George not only a wonderful
experience to you but to everyone
who came in contact with you. You
decided to take a path… a path for
leaders who believe in beauty, love
and a better world. In this path you
leave a trail that I hope many of
our students follow. Good luck out
there!
The Saint George School 3R’s Recycling Program had another
successful year collecting over 3,000 pounds of paper and newspaper
deposited in the recycle boxes all around school, donated by the Parent’s
Association and many families who wanted to show that their family
cares about our environment and our planet. We also painted boxes
ourselves with Primary School helpers. Together we collected and
recycled over 1,00o pounds of plastic bottles as a community; many
students and families even brought from their home or office.
We started using the Green Brigade vest to help develop a sense of
pride and responsibility for our younger students. They feel they are now
accountable to get their job done. They come right after school, put on
their vests and go right to work emptying liquid from bottles, crushing
them and putting them in the barrel. They are learning to reduce what
they don’t need, reuse when they can, and recycle all the time. It makes
a difference! Thanks to the many students, teachers and staff from
Pre-School, Primary, Middle School and High School who automatically
recycle, help out by collecting paper and bottles, and are responsible
citizens who know that if they don’t do it, it won’t get done.
Start recycling right away at home by decorating a box and teaching
everyone in the house to collect plastic bottles and newspaper. It is so
easy, anyone can do it!
Have a great summer and see you soon!
¿Qué hacen nuestros
estudiantes después de su
graduación? La respuesta a esta
pregunta es muy reconfortante
y nos llena de mucho orgullo.
Nuestros alumnos se insertan en el
mundo “real”, donde logran hacer la
diferencia, trascender y cambiar la
realidad de su entorno, siendo fiel a
su compromiso con la excelencia.
En este suplemento conocerán
qué hacen algunos de nuestros
alumnos cuando finalizan su labor
en nuestras aulas y se convierten
en profesionales. Ya sea en el país o
en el extranjero nuestros egresados
definitivamente dejan sus huellas
en cualquier ámbito en que se
encuentren. Este primer grupo
de egresados exitosos demuestra
como la pasión por lo que hacen
refleja quienes son. Verán egresados
exitosos en la diplomacia, industria,
finanzas, ciencias, informática y
deporte. Esperamos en algunos
años que muchos de nuestros
más jóvenes lectores; nuestros
estudiantes, formen parte de este
grupo de egresados exitosos y que
podamos compartir sus logros y
contribuciones con toda nuestra
comunidad educativa.
padre estimuló y ayudó a cultivar.
¡No bien hace 31 años me
Mi padre me dijo, “aquí vas a aprenderlo aunque no
No
Against all odds… this is the phrase that comes to our minds after we
have the honor to read Nicole’s story; someone able to undertake a task
or quest when the chances of success are very low. Our Nicole, who not
too long ago was running around our playground, will share with us a
series of events that have occurred to mold her life and how she was able
to face them first hand like a true dragon. We encourage you to take the
time to step into her life experience through these words full of courage,
stamina and true determination. Here is her story...
“About a year ago, I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. I can recall
as though it were yesterday that moment in which I opened the envelope
with my results and pulled out a piece of paper with those two words
in bold letters, and just sit there breathless and shocked. The weeks
that followed were filled with anger, rage, impotence and the recurrent
thought of “now what?”
I was hospitalized for a week for further testing and to start an
aggressive steroid treatment. The looks on my friends’ and family’s face
confirmed my motives to feel beaten; their pitiful looks scared me in ways
they could never imagine.
But I can’t complain
Throughout those weeks I had
that unconditional love and
support for which my family
is characterized; something
that later on motivated me to
change my perspective.
I think that the diagnosis
wasn’t as painful as my doctor’s
recommendations when we
sat down to plan out how I
would have to live the rest of
my life. As he mentioned all the
changes I would have to make,
hearing him say that I could no
longer do strenuous physical
activity and would have to limit
my exercising to swimming and
walking was the final straw
that broke my spirit. I wanted
to die.
I had always been a very active
person and very fond of sports
and listening to someone say
that I could no longer take
part in something that had
grown to be a part of me, was
devastating.
During my time in the hospital
I had the luck, no, better yet, I
had the blessing of being visited
by others who had the same
condition as me. Complete
strangers motivated by the sole
purpose of understanding what
it was like and wanting to help
make the change a little bit
easier knocked on my door or
called me up to see how I was.
They constantly reassured me
that things would work out,
that I just needed to get to
know my body better and learn
how to work my life around
this.
At some point, I’m not quite
sure when, everything changed.
My anger was substituted by
hope and my impotence by
faith.
God knew how to get the best out of me in my worst moment. Ironically
this one thing that could have truncated all my plans, turned out to be
something that veered them into a better direction. My life was now filled
with appreciation and gratefulness for living. I felt the need to do better,
do more, and go farther.
Today, I look back on the year that has passed and can only smile when I
think of how foolish I had been to doubt that God had intended this for
me as a blessing.
This year, I had the honor of rejoining my ultimate Frisbee team, OUC,
with whom I shared the victory of the National Ultimate Championship.
I had the opportunity of captaining the Barracudas, our beach ultimate
team, and with them, won the National Beach Ultimate Championship
as well.
For the first time in my life I hiked the Pico Duarte, and did so in good
time and feeling great.
AGORA / 37
Another first was mountain
biking. I commemorated my
year diagnosed by participating
in the 120km trip 21st
Clásico Santiago to Monte
Cristi and a week later did
160 kms of the renowned
“Tour del Sufrimiento”. I have
participated in two MTB
races after that (district and
national) and have gotten 3rd
and 1st place.
Ironically, this turned out to
be one of the best years of my
life. With the right attitude,
faith in God, and a few lifestyle
adjustments, I am currently
doing all those things my
doctor said I wouldn’t be able
to do, and so much more.”
“When I look back on
my years at Saint George
School I am overwhelmed by
memories of growing up not
in an institution, but in a large
family constituted by friends,
teachers and staff. How could
I forget the consistent smile
and greeting from Domingo
as we crossed the gates,
Dinorah’s empty threats if
we messed around in the
bathrooms or Don Juan’s care
for our wellbeing? Teachers and
principals that marked us for
life, and whom we will forever
be in debt for our formation.
All the way from Mr. Espaillat
who would take away our
volleyball balls so we had at
least 10 minutes to eat lunch,
Leyba doing that weird thing
with his hands on his head to
gather the class, to those who
battled with us day in and day
out inside the classrooms. From
elementary (Calderón, Pérez,
Colón, Alonsi, etc.) to high
school, Ramírez, Cueto, Pidek,
Almonte, Sánchez amongst
many, we had the blessing
38 / AGORA
of being instructed by people who wanted us not only to prevail in
academics, but to strive as honest and righteous human beings.
When you ask what I have taken with me from Saint George School,
what part of what I lived throughout those years is still part of me today,
I would say everything. My beliefs in discipline, structure and persistence
for learning, were all constructed in my years at SGS. The values I was
taught, the friends I made, but most importantly, the little life lessons
learned at school, are and will always be a consequential part of my life.
Thanks to the love and dedication of everyone at SGS, I can proudly say
that I am who I am today.
me inculcó valores humanos esenciales: disciplina,
solidaridad, perseverancia, servicio, fraternidad,
respeto, diálogo, espíritu de equipo, puntualidad
y urbanidad.
tan diversificada a nivel lingüístico, temático,
debo a ustedes: ¡Muchas Gracias!
Les presentamos a José Luis y Felipe Thomas. Unos
Engineering Honor Society (GMI).
9th and 10th Grade
Literature Teacher
After a year of responding to literature in a creative
manner, such as creating butterflies to represent young
poets who lived and died during the Holocaust, the 9th
Grade undertook the project of writing puppet theater
plays and creating the actual puppets and the theaters.
As an introduction to the unit, we studied different
puppet theater traditions from around the world
and the role they played in their particular societies.
We focused on the Bunraku puppets from Japan, the
Chinese shadow puppets, the Indonesian Wayang
puppets, the European marionettes and the modern
hand and finger puppets.
Once the students were familiar with each tradition,
they divided into groups and each group chose a target
audience ranging from Infant School to Upper School.
They then wrote age-appropriate scripts that used the
correct language, engaged their chosen audience and
met the conventions of one of the puppet theater
traditions. Students were also required to make their
own puppets and the corresponding stage.
As a final step in the project, students visited the
designated classes for their intended audiences
and performed their puppet shows! It was both an
entertaining and educational experience, as students
also led discussions with their audience members after
the performance, and different age-groups were able
to interact and bond. Some of the groups also chose
to donate their puppets to the classes they visited.
This was also a great experience, as students practiced
good communication, leadership and problem-solving
skills. They were also able to practice visual and oral
storytelling.
original stories and characters to
the audience.
The characters and their stories
became alive when the students
dressed up as them, had interactive
booths which attracted people
and let the audience be part of
the stories. Trailers and games
were shown to the audience, and
there were also performances from
the characters such as Heroes vs.
Villains.
During the Comic-Con, Saint
George also received special
guests. These were the Dominican
actors and director from the first
Dominican superhero movie,
“Los Super”. The actors had an
interactive presentation and
entertained the audience. They
finished by signing flyers for the
attendees.
As Spring approaches our
Middle School and High School
students start preparing for
activities in which self expression
takes a main role. This year our
Spring activities included two very
interesting evenings: Our 5th and
6th Prep Dance and our Middle
School and High School Talent
Show.
The dance took us back to the
decade in which bell bottoms,
polyester and platforms were the
top fashion. Our 5th and 6th Prep
students took their creativity and
enthusiasm to a higher level as they
entered our lounge discotheque
wearing the most amazing 70’s
outfits in a night that surpassed
every expectation. Everyone
danced away and hoped the
party would never end. From the
recording of Harlem Shakes by both
levels to dance contests and live
performances that shall never be
forgotten.
A couple of weeks later the
stage was set, the musical
instruments were ready in place
for a night in which our most
talented students shared their
voices, dances and tunes with
21 amazing performances during
our 2013 Talent Show. We had
it all: from two amazing Masters
of Ceremonies who could
professionally handle any main
event to top of the line singers
who gave the audience goose
bumps as they hit notes like real life
performers. We had great dance
groups, our High School band, and
even a Salsa group who sang and
dance getting a standing ovation
from the audience. And of course…
our grand finale… Galia took over
the stage and took us through a
wonderful journey of their favorite
songs during their entire lives at
school. They drove the audience to
get up from their seats and cheer
as they impersonated the most
famous artists and performers of
the 90’s. Their creativity and energy
gave our talent show an ending that
will be hard to forget.
Spelling is important since
it improves vocabulary and
comprehension. When we become
fluent readers we read words as
a whole, but we need to master
the connection between letter
combinations and the sounds they
represent. During the months
of April and May, students were
evaluated inside the classroom
with a list of vocabulary words that
they have used throughout the
school year. Out of each class, three
finalists were chosen to participate
in the final Spellathon. The
experience was amazing, feeling the
energy of classmates, as students
were able to show an excellent
display of friendship and solidarity.
We started the finals on May 7th
with the following students from
fifth grade: Isabella Jiménez, Yamil
Arbaje, Sofía Barderas, Isabelle
Ciconne, Gabriela Muñoz, Karla
Fermín, Pedro Guzmán, Amelia
Andújar, and Annabelle Aquino.
From this amazing group of
students our first place winner was
Karla Fermín, and our second place
was won by Gabriela Muñoz.
Wednesday, May 8th we carried
on our 6th grade finals with the
following participants: Andressa
Frankowski, Lauren Niedsialek,
Eduardo Santos, María Jansen, Eric
De Los Santos, Saibeth German,
Paola De Los Santos, Yuichi
Miyanowaki, and Nerys Sarraf.
Our sixth grade participants kept
us in suspense until the very end,
as a result Andressa Frankowski
obtained first place and her runner
up was Saibeth Germán.
Finally on Thursday May 9th we
had our 1st Form final where
Genoveva Villanueva, Liz Joa,
Mónica Geraldez, Eduardo Andújar,
Nathaniel Olivo, Beatriz Eckhart,
perfeccionamiento directivo y programas enfocados
universitarias”.
Así que ya saben. No hay excusas. Nunca es tarde
para seguir formándose, actualizar y compartir
conocimientos con otros directivos, hacer networking
y ¿por qué no?, vivir nuevas y enriquecedoras
experiencias.
This year’s IB Visual Arts’ candidates have caused
quite a stir with their expo.
They have chosen to work on socially polemic themes.
Superficiality, traits of Dominican society, urban,
struggle, death, utopia, anarchy, sin, and moods have
been the center of focus. We have respected their
personal views and displayed the way they have
chosen to express them.
The intimate views of these 9 young adults have
taken on a personal responsibility to denounce
political, social, and human realities of their
environment. Pain, sorrow and anxiety are only a few
of the realities that our young perceive through
media, video games, society, home, and surroundings.
Keep in mind the Art Department’s focus is on
forming visual communicators who are capable of
bringing topics of personal growth and contemplation.
Eventualmente fui contratado y pasé a
he tomado en mi carrera.
• Jugos naturales, frutas, varias
opciones de yogurts, granolas y
bizcochitos integrales forman parte
hoy en día de nuestra oferta.
• Dragon Bites Tent (Carpa del
Campus II) viene siendo nuestra
pequeña sucursal en esta área y en
la misma tenemos una oferta diaria
de meriendas pre-empacadas(wraps,
sandwiches y ensaladas mixtas). Dos
o tres veces por semana realizamos
ciertos especiales como el BBQ
de los miércoles y recientemente
iniciamos los jueves de pizzas
artesanales.
No hay mayor recompensa
durante el día como la de recibir
un espaldarazo de cualquier
miembro de la familia Saint George
expresando que algo de lo que
hacemos en Dragon Bites le gustó,
no obstante, es de igual satisfacción
recibir una crítica constructiva de
parte de estos (e insisto mucho en
que me las comuniquen), pues al
final del día estas críticas son las
que nos ayudan a ser mejores.
Gracias por permitirme ser parte de
la familia.
5th grade students spent more than a week studying about poetry.
They were exposed to several poems written both by professionals as well
as other students. Then, they were instructed to create various poems
that included some of the basic elements such as alliteration, rhyme,
onomatopoeia, and figurative language, among others. I needed to limit
choosing only a couple per class due to space constrains, a very difficult
decision as many of them were able to come up with beautiful poems.
Here are some examples. I hope you enjoy them.
The King
by Margaret Heffernan
5th Prep Pedro Mir
You can never run from the king
He knows just about everything
You can try to hide
But inside your mind,
You know he just has too much
Pride.
My friend once tried to do it
But she really blew it
When the king found out
He gave a shout
And that’s when the guards
Came about.
Now I would not recommend it
I think is just too much to hit
For one thing the king is an eagle
And his guards are evil
Cricket Lullaby
by Erika Medrano
5th Prep Pedro Mir
I hear a cricket
Doing crick, crick
The owl hoots
Who, who
The breeze,
The frog,
Rustling leaves
Makes a lullaby
I hum to the tune
Lay my head on the pillow,
Put on the cozy blanket
Close my weary eyes
The lullaby is as soft as a whisper,
I sleep calmly
The hum is rhythm
Try to listen,
You will hear it too.
Summer
by Sofia Barderas
5th Prep Longfellow
Summer, summer
The one after spring
I visit new places
Like the jungle and the sea
Summer, summer
My favorite season
I love you as
Much as the sun loves you
Summer, summer
I love so much
That I wish
It could never end.
One and Only
by Gabriela Muñoz
5th Prep Pedro Mir
Those thoughts up in the sky
You sometimes have to say
goodbye,
Even though you may want to cry
I will be right by your side.
In sickness and in health
Through happy and through sad
Even if I drive you crazy,
Or I am sort of lazy,
I will be with you
And help you fly.
You are my friend,
I can talk to you,
I can cry with you,
But never because of you.
Our friendship is one and only
I never feel lonely
You and I will be together,
Together forever.
My feelings can’t be expressed
In a five stanza poem,
But I have done it right now
And my words will remain spoken.
My Mom
by Pedro Guzmán
5th Prep Walter Scott
My mom
Loves me
And I
Love her;
She goes to
All the places
That I go.
If I don’t
Have her,
I don’t know
What to do; she
Does all the
Things that
I want and
She says to me
That I need
To never say never.
Tigers I do draw,
Just remember killing tigers is
Wind
by Isabela Jiménez
5th Prep Longfellow
When the wind blows...
When the wind blows it takes the
pain away
It takes the stress from yesterday
It makes you smile and realize
How life could change in every way
When the wind blows it keeps you
safe
While all the scars fly to space
They walk away and make you pay
For every mistake in life’s pace
And then it blows the leaves away
Behind the mountains and over
them
Takes them high as they make their
way
To a land where dreams are bought
to express
For me it’s easy to understand
How life and dreams can fly away
And now can I ask you my friend,
Do you know the land where
dreams awake?
Proyecto GLOBE (Global Learning and Observation to
Benefit the Environment)
58,000 profesores GLOBE entrenados y representando
regional y mundial. La información recopilada por los
estudiantes después de los entrenamientos es enviada
a científicos de la NASA (National Aereonautics and
Space Administration, NOAA (National Oceanic
and Atmospheric Administration) y NSF (National
Science Foundation) como aportes para el estudio
de investigaciones acerca de la dinámica del
medioambiente terrestre.
cobertura terrestre y suelos.
A) Estación Climatológica GLOBE
afianza nuestros valores morales;
permite que podamos sentirnos
agradecidos por lo que tenemos,
y de ayudar a otros a ver sus
fortalezas.
Este año escolar hemos iniciado
una serie de actividades en busca
de que nuestros alumnos puedan
aportar en la transformación de
nuestra sociedad, colaborando con
comunidades necesitadas y niños
con deseos de superación.
Junto a la Fundación Futuro Posible
logramos que nuestros alumnos de
5to y 6to grado compartieran con
estudiantes del Colegio Ave María
De Los Ángeles en una actividad
muy divertida. Visitamos nuestro
Jardín Botánico Nacional en un
por Ivonne Guzmán,
Middle School Principal
sábado lleno de energía, canciones
y juegos divertidos en el cual
recorrimos en un viaje en tren todo
el lugar.
Con los educandos de 7mo y
8vo grado abrimos las puertas de
nuestro recinto escolar para que
los niños del Colegio Margarita
Nassau, compartieran los viernes
en un espacio para reforzar la
lectura y el desempeño en las
matemáticas. Nuestros alumnos
asumieron un gran reto al enseñar
a muchos de estos niños a conocer
desde el alfabeto, palabras sencillas,
caligrafías, números y operaciones
matemáticas básicas.
Como maestros nos llena de orgullo
que nuestros alumnos dispongan de
su tiempo para ofrecer a otros sus
conocimientos y su compañía. No
Dominicana, nuestro Pico Duarte.
Angeles. 2. Reforzando matemáticas.
3. Gabriela Muñoz e Isabelle Ciccone junto a
sus nuevas amigas. 4.
Bonetti.
64 / AGORA
hijos y nuestro colegio.
Puede que algunos de ustedes
se hayan preguntado por qué nos
hemos tardado tanto en hablar de
Chiqui… es que yo, personalmente,
quería esperar que pasara la tristeza
inmediata. Nunca vi a Chiqui
Chiqui
estaba allí a mi lado cuando, a veces,
sentía nostalgia por mi país… y yo
a su lado, por ejemplo… cuando
Alejandro, de dos o tres años de
edad, se escapaba (como hacía
con frecuencia) corriendo por la
Lope de Vega hacia la gasolinera…
y Chiqui corriendo detrás.
Disfrutamos de la mutua compañía…
y… sobre todo, confiábamos la una
en la otra.
Cuando en 1965 Saint George abrió
sus puertas como una pequeña
escuela, “Los Angelitos”, en ese
entonces… Chiqui estuvo ahí desde
el primer día haciendo todo lo que
fuera posible para que nuestra
escuela fuera un éxito. Ella amaba
nosotros.
On Friday, April 26th, the Class of 2014 had the honor to prepare
a farewell lunch for the Seniors to appreciate their hard work and
celebrate their legacy on the school at the Walsh Wardell Building. We
set as our main objective to give them a warm, comfortable, and pleasant
environment where they could enjoy themselves as a group. The lunch
was a mixture on the focus of a Rock & Roll theme and Galia’s golden era.
We were accompanied with the presence of coordinators and teachers
who were very supportive.
As guests were arriving, they took pictures in the photo booth with
Marilyn Monroe while Leonardo Santos and Guillermo Germade were
playing live music to set the Rock & Roll mood. Mónica Ruiz opened the
lunch with a heart-touching speech. Then, a video was dedicated to them
with pictures of Galia throughout their years in and outside of school.
After a prayer by Laura Marcial, we proceeded to raffle out the tables for
the buffet that was anxiously waiting to be served outside. Each number
read caused both a mini celebration by the chosen table and a cry by the
rest of the room. While everyone was eating, music, such as We All Live
in a Yellow Submarine by The Beatles, played in the
background.
Now it was dessert time! Our hard-working waiters
passed menus for guests to contemplate between
the mouth-watering brigadeiro, Nutella cheesecake,
majarete, brownie à la mode, dulce de coco, and Rock
and Roll decorated cupcakes.
After eating, we started an activity to involve seniors.
Volunteers had to choose a little paper out of a bowl
and answer questions such as “La que más duerme”, “La
tarea que nunca entregaste”, and “La mejor broma que
has hecho”. This brought a lot of laughter and secrets
were given away. Afterwards, another video was
presented. Now, teachers and other close friends were
expressing their wishes towards Galia. There were a lot
of “aw”s and glee in the air. The moment: tears were
being shed and hugs were being given as each member
of the Class of 2014 gave a personalized pin to every
Senior. Finally, guests were leaving with their golden
little boxes, their Galia discs, and a smile on their faces.
It was truly an unforgettable event.
Galia, make the best of your future. The Class of 2014
wishes you the very best of luck!
Over the course of the year the
students learned a variety of skills
and have worked with different
techniques as part of the SGS Art
Program.
This end of year exhibit showcases
their talents and creativity both
individually and collectively.
Primary School students
demonstrated the basic elements
of art in a colorful fashion. Middle
School students made collaborative
reproductions of famous paintings
by Candido Bidó as well as
sculptures and decorative projects
for Mother’s Day. High School
students showed their individual
interpretations of still life drawings,
comic superheroes and they even
gave us a sneak peak of the talents
of our 5th Form IB Visual Art
Candidates.
These works will be photographed
and sent to the IB Organization
where they may be selected to
decorate the walls of the New IB
Headquarters’ Building.
