This year the students of Middle School offered
their talents and knowledge of Mandarin to celebrate
the Chinese New Year.
The presentation began with the thundering drumbeat
of Jonathan Wang and 5th Prep Pedro Mir students
performing a traditional Lion Dance which is believed
to scare away evil and bad luck in order to welcome
the new year with good fortune. They had made the
Lion Costumes using brilliant colors that mesmerized
the audience at the special assembly.
Then 5th Longfellow reenacted the story of how the
twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac were chosen.
Finally, the chorus of 5th graders sang the new year’s
poem “Yuan Ri” which described the scenery of New
Year’s day with the sound of firecrackers bidding
farewell to the old year and the arrival of the spring
breeze that brings joy and hope to people’s hearts.
1st and 2nd Form students practiced their Chinese
calligraphy and constructed a giant lantern to
decorate the stage.
This year 2013 is the year of the snake, so in honor
of the 6th Prep students who were born in the year
of the snake during the previous zodiac cycle, all of
Middle School students constructed a giant origami
snake out of more than two thousand pieces of
folded paper. They took time during recess, they
made them at home and put the pieces together in
Art Class to create a 3D snake sculpture.
We congratulate the students of Middle School
on their efforts to learn Mandarin and to help us
increase our cultural awareness.
