It’s hard to believe that another year has gone by
at Saint George School. As usual, the month of May
is full of students preparing for IB exams, planning
graduation activities, and looking forward to another
summer vacation. But seniors are struggling with an
enormous decision which has both social and academic
implications for their future.
So Seniors… after a year or more of working and
worrying, it’s done: you’ve received word from all
the colleges to which you applied. All that remains in
your college quest is making the final decision. Which
college will you attend? So how does one make this
choice? This is a big decision. You are getting ready to
decide where you are going to be living for the next
four years of your life. You are leaving home for the
first time and even though you will come back from
time to time; when you go away to college, that in fact
will be your home. It is a big decision that requires a
lot of thought. The first is to go back and revisit the
webpages of each university. Then, make sure you sit
down and talk with your parents and counselor again.
You should go back and have another conversation
with that person and then if there is some one or two
people on the outside, a family, relative, a neighbor,
another teacher, who you really trust, go back and sit
down and talk to them. Tell them, I have got these five
choices. Here are the things that are most important
to me. Right now, I am leaning towards this school for
these reasons; tell me, what you think? So, get that
outside input from people who you know, people whom you trust, and people who you know love you and have
your best interest. But I believe most importantly, trust your instincts! College is a big investment of time and
money and how you feel about it counts a great deal. If you have two or more choices, it may be wise to go with
the one that just feels right for you.
Now it is my turn to say goodbye to the graduating class of 2013. As many of you know, this class is very special
to me as one of its members is my dearest nephew Juan Antonio Valdez. For 15 years I have had him by my side
at school, guiding him along the way. Now it is his turn to apply all he has learned and make a future for himself.
Juan Antonio… I will always be there urging you on, helping you overcome obstacles, and applauding your
achievements. And to all of Galia ‘13, I leave you with these words…
This is just the end of the beginning for you. I’ll expect that you should meet with any challenges that come before you
with dignity, pride and much success. The potential is there - use it! Parents, teachers and administrators have invested
much love, time and energy in you. All we want in return is your happiness and success. You never get a second chance
to make a good first impression. Whatever choices you make in life, you have to be well-prepared for it and do it right
the first time. And finally…Graduation is just the start for what’s coming next. You have many roads to encounter. You
will choose the path best for you. You have made your mark on your high school... I’m sure you will make your mark on
other institutions and people in your life.
God bless you all
