Spring
by Karla Fermín
5th Prep Pedro Mir
What a beautiful spring
All the wonders it brings
Full of love and inspiration
It’s a beautiful sensation
Fresh, like a summer afternoon
Look at the sky, talk to the moon
Let the passion of the rhymes
Make you spend a great time
Feel the green, healthy grasses
Look how fast the time passes
Be free to say YAY!
This is not a school day.
by María Isabel Tejeda,
Language Arts Teacher
5th grade students spent more than a week studying about poetry.
They were exposed to several poems written both by professionals as well
as other students. Then, they were instructed to create various poems
that included some of the basic elements such as alliteration, rhyme,
onomatopoeia, and figurative language, among others. I needed to limit
choosing only a couple per class due to space constrains, a very difficult
decision as many of them were able to come up with beautiful poems.
Here are some examples. I hope you enjoy them.
The King
by Margaret Heffernan
5th Prep Pedro Mir
You can never run from the king
He knows just about everything
You can try to hide
But inside your mind,
You know he just has too much
Pride.
My friend once tried to do it
But she really blew it
When the king found out
He gave a shout
And that’s when the guards
Came about.
Now I would not recommend it
I think is just too much to hit
For one thing the king is an eagle
And his guards are evil
There is even a watch
Dog who is a beagle
Cricket Lullaby
by Erika Medrano
5th Prep Pedro Mir
I hear a cricket
Doing crick, crick
The owl hoots
Who, who
The breeze,
The frog,
Rustling leaves
Makes a lullaby
I hum to the tune
Lay my head on the pillow,
Put on the cozy blanket
Close my weary eyes
The lullaby is as soft as a whisper,
I sleep calmly
The hum is rhythm
Try to listen,
You will hear it too.
Summer
by Sofia Barderas
5th Prep Longfellow
Summer, summer
The one after spring
I visit new places
Like the jungle and the sea
Summer, summer
My favorite season
I love you as
Much as the sun loves you
Summer, summer
I love so much
That I wish
It could never end.
One and Only
by Gabriela Muñoz
5th Prep Pedro Mir
Those thoughts up in the sky
You sometimes have to say
goodbye,
Even though you may want to cry
I will be right by your side.
In sickness and in health
Through happy and through sad
Even if I drive you crazy,
Or I am sort of lazy,
I will be with you
And help you fly.
You are my friend,
I can talk to you,
I can cry with you,
But never because of you.
Our friendship is one and only
I never feel lonely
You and I will be together,
Together forever.
My feelings can’t be expressed
In a five stanza poem,
But I have done it right now
And my words will remain spoken.
My Mom
by Pedro Guzmán
5th Prep Walter Scott
My mom
Loves me
And I
Love her;
She goes to
All the places
That I go.
If I don’t
Have her,
I don’t know
What to do; she
Does all the
Things that
I want and
She says to me
That I need
To never say never.
