“The Great Poetry Race” is a
reading activity that takes place
among the Primary School students
as part of my Library Skills Class. It
is very simple and the children love
it!
I introduce the poems and give the
students guidelines about how they
should be read. Then, they receive
a copy of the poem and a form that
includes directions as well as a place
for signatures.
In a week, they read the poem to as
many people as possible in school
and at home. After the students
read the poem, each person had to
sign a form and make a comment.
The students with the most
signatures win the race.
Three winners are chosen from
each class: 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places.
They receive certificates as a prize.
This activity has been so effective
and highly competitive due to
the children´s enthusiasm, that
honorable mentions have also been
granted to children who could not
make it to the top places.
The Great Poetry Race has become
a very popular activity, here at
Saint George. We carry it out on a
yearly basis. This is our third event,
and the eagerness displayed by the
students not only has increased
through the years, but it is also
highly commendable!
This activity actually culminates
when the winners present a
poetry recital, at our assembly.
Parents, administrators, teachers,
and students are delighted with
the outstanding performances
presented by the winners.
