Abarco is a heavy wood that shows low linear shrinkage and
moderately stable volumetric shrinkage. Mechanical resistance is
ranked as medium to high. Has good workability for machining
and presents a good finish. It is reported that this group of species
has a high silica content (in excess of 0.05%) and can blunt the
cutting edges of machines and tools; however, veneers are
reported to be cut without difficulty. Presents very few defects in
planing and drilling. Dries rapidly in open air with very little
checking or warping and is apt for a harsh artificial drying
program. Recommended kiln schedules are USA T3-D2 (4/4) and
T3-D1 (8/4) or program D for the UK. The wood is rated as
highly durable and is resistant to both fungi and insect attack.
USES
Wood is used for railway sleepers, construction, shipbuilding,
veneers, plywood, interior molding, furniture, floors, doors
carpentry and cabinet work.

Carbonero is a heavy wood that shows low linear shrinkage and
moderately stable volumetric shrinkage. Mechanical resistance is
ranked as high. The wood is difficult to work with due to its high
silica content (1.66%) and the use of diamond tipped saws is
recommended in order to achieve smooth surfaces. Drying is
moderately easy with only slight warping occurring. Data on kiln
schedules is not available. The wood is considered to be of poor
durability and is prone to both insect and fungi attack; however, it
is reported to be resistance to marine borers because of the high
silica content. It is reported as moderately difficult to treat.
USES
The wood is used for heavy construction, railroad ties, marine
piles and construction, ship components, as well as flooring.

Espavé is a light wood that shows low linear shrinkage and very
stable volumetric shrinkage. Mechanical resistance is ranked as
medium. The wood is fibrous but easy to saw, poor for planning
and sanding, good for shaping and mortising, and fair for turning.
Main common machining defects are chipped grain and fuzzy
surfaces. It is moderately difficult to air dry and tends to twist and
warp in artificial drying. Recommended kiln schedules for drying
are T6-D2 and T3-D1 in the US and an E for the UK. Sapwood is
susceptible to fungi attack, but the heartwood shows resistance to
pressure-vacuum treatments or immersion.
Wood is used locally for construction of canoes and houses,
Roble is a moderately heavy wood that shows low linear
is ranked as medium to low. The wood is excellent to work with
somewhat slow, and may present slight warping and very slight
