Problem: Expanda Cable power cord located inside
sootblower housing on IK525/525R/IKSD
Issues: NO Accessibility for maintenance and periodic
Adjustments
Impossible to inspect and PM
Each travel and each hand requires different cables
Improper adjustment causes failure, which can be costly
Solution: Clyde Bergemann, Inc. “E-Chain” conversion kit or
external expanda cable kit
Advantages: Both kits are externally mounted to facilitate inspection and preventive maintenance
Eliminates expensive coiled cords (E-Chain)
Uses standard SO cord (E-Chain)
Both kits provide disconnect at motor
Both kits retrofitable in field
The expanda cable power cord is located inside the sootblower housing and provides power to the motor
over the course of the travel. The cable is mounted on a suspension rod, which covers the entire length of
the blower. An extension cone (later a floating cone) aids the coiling and uncoiling of the expanda cable
during an operation. The cable can get lodged between the cone and rod and short out if not adjusted
properly. The cable loops must be of the proper size to assure clearance in it’s confined space or service
life is sacrificed. The location of the cable in proximity to the feedtube packing has been known to cause
the cable to lose its shape and sag into the gear rack.
The Clyde Bergemann, Inc. “E-Chain” conversion consists of a retractable cable carrier (“E” chain) which
is supported by a simple trey system. The power cord is located inside the cable carrier and is standard
“SO” cord and a disconnect at the motor is provided. A towbar mounted to the carriage assembly pulls the
cable carrier along and the treys support the cable of the length of travel.
The Clyde Bergemann, Inc. External Expanda Cable kit moves the expanda cable to the outside of the
blower. The same coiled cord is used; however, maintainability and accessibility are greatly improved.
UPGRADE OPTIONS:
Both the “E” chain kit and the External expanda cable kits are available with external limit switches for the
utmost in complete electrical system maintainability. Magnetic proximity switches are provided with
required mounting brackets and hardware for complete installation.
