subordinada en el grupo familiar.

YOUNG WOMEN´S EXPERIENCES AND
MEANINGS ON THEIR SUBORDINATE
POSITION IN THE FAMILY: THE
GENEALOGICAL TREE
ABSTRACT
The aim was to determine the way young women live and mean
their subordinate position in the family. Seven college students
participated collectively drawing and analyzing their
genealogical trees. Both events were filmed. The trees were
photographed and the films were transcribed. Each type of tree
(authentic, a mere pretext or hybrid) synthesized and expressed
the structure, composition and functioning of the family, where
the participant was assigned a central site. Ideas were raised
about the origin, position and hierarchy of young women in their
family. It was emphasized their subordinate position as women
and relatives, which depended on the composition, activities
and forms of everyday living of the family, and the decisions
and actions of young women as protagonists. They acted in
different ways this position: selflessly caring for their brothers,
serving them domestically, protecting them lovingly, accepting
the authority of the father, rebelling against their father's control
or suffering his despotism. In conclusion, meanwhile the
genealogical trees and the analysis of these were appropriate
instruments to integrate actions, experiences, expectations,
places and positions of the young women in their family, the
gender perspective allowed us to interpret the way they act,
perceive and represent their subordinate position in the family
group.
