REDUCCION EN LA FUENTE PRODUCTOS Lámparas con mercurio Actualmente existen pocas alternativas de iluminación energéticamente eficientes libre de mercurio. La decisión 1999/568/EC de la Comisión Europea obliga a los fabricantes a utilizar la Ecoetiqueta Europea en lámparas compactas fluorescentes, cuyo contenido de mercurio no puede exceder los 4 mg y la vida de la lámpara debe superar las 10.000 horas. Varios países han implementado programas de recolección de lámparas fluorescentes. La tecnología LED parece ser una alternativa interesante aunque hasta el momento no logra resultados satisfactorios en cuanto a su capacidad para iluminar ambientes completos. El LED está conquistando el segmento de iluminación en pequeños dispositivos.
REDUCCION EN LA FUENTE PRODUCTOS Baterías conteniendo mercurio Desde hace varios años existen alternativas libres de mercurio para baterías botón (baterías zinc-aire) y otros, aunque las que actualmente se comercializan contienen cantidades pequeñas de mercurio (10 a 25 mg). En USA los fabricantes acordaron eliminar el mercurio de las pilas botón en 2011. El gran volumen de pilas en los vertederos constituyen una amenaza. Biocidas pesticidas y Este uso ha sido discontinuado o prohibido en varios países. Las alternativas son: el uso de procesos que no requieran pesticidas o biocidas y productos degradables específicos con mínimo impacto ambiental.
