has been taken for them. Information on natural regeneration was gathered on 27 plots, and the
presence of flowers and fruit, and the apperance or falling of leaves, was observed in 81 trees.
The above information was complemented by monthly recordings of the characteristics of waters
flooding the mangroves, taken from a network of monitoring stations set up along the whole of
the Pacific coast. Parameters for salinity, temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH and flooding levels
or the presence of water was measured at 16 such stations, in order to make a preliminary
identification of the conditions suited to the growth of mangroves, and possible influences on
their developement and the developement of associated resources, with changes in the characteristics
of the water.
In the social, cultural, economic and productive aspects of the work, research was conducted
among the coastal communities which have a strong dependence on resources associated with
mangroves, with respect to their traditional forms of production in relevant areas such as practices,
resources extracted or caught, levels of association and organisation in their work, mechanisms
for selling their production, etc. Support was also given to the continuity of certain productive
activities which were an established feature of the local communities, in the search for
processes which would enable mangrove resources to be conserved and managed, and avoid
excessive pressure on the resource. In this, there was support for the implementation of a productive
cycle of the Penaeus spp. shrimp in the breeding ponds of a group of charcoal makers and
lumberjacks in Tumaco (NarifioJ. Experimental production was started for an agricultural subsistence
project among charcoal makers in Guapi [Cauca). Finally in Papayal-Raposo, near
Buenaventura [Valle del Cauca) there was experimental production of a local fish (the lisa, or
Mug;1 spp.) in captivity.
