Hello, You’re watching “Your Health Matters”
from the Orange County Health department.
This is a short informative video series on
health topics that matter.
…and that includes family planning.
Having a baby is one of the most important
decisions a woman will make. We can help
you increase your chances of having a healthy
baby before you become pregnant.
Your health…your home environment…and
the amount of time between your pregnancies
can effect your ability to have a healthy baby
If you plan on getting pregnant…discuss your
decision with your doctor at least three months
before you plan on conceiving.
SOT
"Medical problems need to be treated before
pregnancy begins. These include diabetes, high
blood pressure, epilepsy, infections, hepatitis,
and heart disease."
VO
Take folic acid BEFORE you become pregnant
to prevent birth defects. In fact, all women of
childbearing age should take 400 micrograms
daily.
SOT
"This can help reduce the risk of a baby having
a neural tube defect NTD, a birth defect of the
brain and spinal cord. Women who take folic
acid for at least one year BEFORE getting
pregnant may reduce their risk of having a
premature baby."
Even if you have had healthy babies in the
past…it's still important to think about your
health with each pregnancy. This includes
maintaining a healthy weight.
SOT
" Women who are over weight may be at
increased risk for high blood pressure and
diabetes, and complications during labor, or
having a still born baby. Women who are
underweight may be at increased risk of having
a premature baby or low-birth weight baby."
VO
Remember…your developing baby's health
depends on your well being. Make sure that
you are properly immunized.
SOT
"Some diseases such as measles,
which can cause birth defects, can be
prevented. It's important to know if you or a
partner has a sexually transmitted disease such
as herpes, chlamydia, or HIV/AIDS. So get
tested."
VO
Your lifestyle and diet can also impact your
pregnancy.
SOT
"Beware of, and make changes to pregnancy
risks such as smoking, poor nutrition, drinking
alcohol, taking drugs, and environmental
exposures such as cleaning products, paint, bug
killers, solvents, and chemicals.
Avoid eating fish that is high in mercury.
Mercury is a metal that can harm an unborn
baby."
Family planning also means properly spacing
your pregnancies. It's better for you and your
baby if you wait two years to get pregnant
following the birth of each child.
SOT
"Having another baby too soon increases the
risk of premature or undersized babies because
the mother is recovering from nutrient and
blood loss as well as stress from the prior birth
and from having to care for a newborn."
You can determine when or if you will become
pregnant by choosing and carefully using a
method of reliable birth control. There are
many safe and low cost methods of
contraception available.
On Camera
Talk to your doctor about which method of
birth control is best for you. This will help
prevent you from becoming pregnant before
you and your partner are ready, and planning a
healthy pregnancy begins before conception.
SOT
SOT
