QUITO NOCTURNO EN BICICLETA
Borja. This is one of the oldest lookout points in old Quito. The group
tours through the park along the trail that runs next to the lighted
manmade lake, on its way to San Blas Square, located on Pedro
Fermín Cevallos and Francisco de Caldas, where San Blas Church
is located, which was built between the XVI and XVIII centuries.
Everyone takes the opportunity to gaze at the church and take some
pictures as a memory.
21:17. Afterwards, the group takes Guayaquil Avenue until it reaches
Plaza del Teatro (Theater Square), located on Guayaquil and Manabí,
where the majestic Teatro Nacional Sucre (Sucre National Theater)
is located. The square contains a statue of the famous comedian,
Ernesto Albán, known for his characters Don Evaristo Corral and
Chancleta, sitting on a park bench looking at the theater, near the
entrance to the section of the theater named after him (Teatro
Variedades Ernesto Albán). After a brief visit at the square, the climb
up the hill on Guayaquil Avenue begins until Plaza Grande (the Big
Square), located on Chile and Venezuela, is reached. This is the heart
of the colonial district in Quito. The square includes the monument of
independence, the President’s Palace, the municipal building of Quito,
the Archbishop’s Palace and the La Catedral Church.
21:35. From the heart of downtown, the tour continues on to Plaza
San Francisco (San Francisco Square), located on Benalcázar and
Sucre, where the beauty of the church can be seen, which according
to legend was built in one evening by Cantuña, an indigenous man
that sold his soul to the devil to keep his promise. After visiting the
square, the bikers continue on to Plaza 24 de Mayo (May 24th Square),
located on García Moreno and 24 de Mayo, to immediately descend
the cobblestone streets of La Ronda, passing under the historic
archway to visit one of the most traditional sites in the capital city.
The bikers have an opportunity to spend 30 minutes in La Ronda,
enjoying some of the traditions of the area, including empanadas
de viento or morocho, buñuelos, pernil sandwiches, etc. The group
also has a chance to refresh, enjoying beer, colas or juice, in addition
to taking in the beautiful architecture of the ancient street, which
maintains the bohemian and artistic feel of colonial Quito.
Por ser lunes, La Ronda está prácticamente deshabitada. Resulta hermoso disfrutar
su arquitectura y colorido a esas horas. Y claro... también un canelazo caliente.
La Ronda is practically empty on Mondays. This is the perfect time to enjoy the
beautiful and colorful architecture in the night, and a warm canelazo (spiced cider).
22:10. The group begins the return trip, passing through Plaza de
Santo Domingo (Saint Dominic Square), located on Chile and Guayaquil,
taking a couple of minutes to admire the church and the archway
located there, talking about the enchantment of Quito at nighttime,
which is a secret to those that visit the area during the day.
