Para el año 2008 el maíz amarillo representó un 42% de esta superficie. La demanda nacional de este tipo de maíz en años anteriores era cubierta con importaciones que conllevaban a una erogación alta de divisas. En el año 2001 se dio un impulso al programa de desarrollo de cultivares de maíz amarillo del Instituto Nacional de Investigaciones Agrícolas (INIA) para la generación de híbridos simples de altos rendimientos y alto contenido de almidón, a objeto de disminuir esas importaciones del rubro. El objetivo de este estudio fue presentar los resultados correspondientes al proceso de obtención y evaluación del híbrido INIA 21, desarrollado entre los años 2001 y 2008 a partir de un cruce dialélico de 10 líneas y sometido a evaluación regional en doce y siete localidades del país durante los años 2005 y 2006, respectivamente. En estas dos pruebas el híbrido rindió en promedio 6.353 kg ha -1 , mostrando un rendimiento máximo de 9.398 kg ha -1 en la localidad de Agua Blanca, estado Portuguesa. Sus características de calidad de grano, en cuanto al almidón (78%), vitamina A (10.482 UI/g), ácido linoleico (82,32%), proteína cruda (10,78%), grasa cruda (6,48%), entre otros, lo hacen adecuado para la industria de almidones y de alimentos balanceados. Por estas razones, se solicitó ante el Servicio Nacional de Semillas (SENASEM) el certificado de elegibilidad del híbrido simple de maíz INIA 21 para la producción y comercialización de semilla certificada. ABSTRACT In Venezuela, about 600.000 hectares are planted with maize (Zea mays L.) annually; the 90% of this area correspond to hybrid materials. For the year 2008, the yellow maize production represented a 42% of this area. The national demand of this type of maize in previous years was covered with imports, which represented a high payment of foreign currency. In year 2001, an impulse was given to the programme for developing yellow-maize cultivars at the National Institute of Agricultural Research (INIA) to produce single-cross hybrids with both high yield and starch content in order to diminish maize supplies from imports. Between years 2001 and 2008, the process of development and evaluation of the single-cross maize hybrid INIA 21 were carried out. It was obtained from a diallel cross of 10 lines and evaluated in regional trials in twelve and seven locations of the country during the years 2005 and 2006, respectively. In these tests, the hybrid yielded 6.353 kg ha -1 , in average, showing its best performance at the location of Agua Blanca, Portuguesa state, with 9.398 kg ha -1 of yield. The characteristics of grain quality, such as starch content (78%), vitamin A (10.482 UI/g), linoleic acid (82,32%), crude protein (10,78%) and crude fat (6,48%), make this hybrid suitable for both starch and balanced feed industry. For all these reasons, the certificate of release of the single-cross maize hybrid INIA 21 was solicited at the National Seed Service (SENASEM) for the multiplication and further distribution of certified seed. INTRODUCCIÓN Un 90% de la producción nacional de maíz proviene de materiales híbridos, por lo que casi toda la semilla certificada y fiscalizada de maíz disponible en el mercado corresponde a este tipo de material. Hasta finales de la década pasada la mayoría de estos híbridos se originaban de cruces dobles, los cuales tienen cuatro líneas endogámicas paternas; los mismos se han venido sustituyendo con híbridos provenientes del cruce de tres líneas paternas (Bejarano, 2003).
